I heard about a pro Zionist who was upset a deli on the Yale campus had supposedly stopped calling its tabbouleh salad "Israeli" -- which it most certainly is not. It turned out they were still wrongly calling it Israeli, even while she was milking the idea as an example of anti semitism. It's galling how they not only steal the dish, claiming it as their own, but demand everyone else go along with it.

What’s becoming so obvious to people now is that colonialism has never ended just rebranded with different terms. From Natives indigenous people being called “savages” in the old days to now being called “terrorist” by neocolonialists who are neoliberals, neoconservatives, and zionist.
      1) Savages is now “terrorist”
      2) Civilizing them is now “bringing them democracy”
      3) Colonies is now “territories”
We can all see Israel is a colonial project being supported by former and current colonials such as U.S, UK, and others who also control territories of indigenous natives in Caribbean Islands, Pacific Islands, Hawaii, and many more.
The liberation of Palestine will definitely give RISE to many indigenous natives around the world to free themselves from western domination. This is the underlying ripple effect that the U.S government and its puppet allies don’t want to happen

I remember my first days volunteering on kibbutz. I turned on the radio and heard some interesting rhythmic Arabic music. The Israeli soldier boy said it was Arabic in a dismissive way and instantly changed the station. You learn you are not to value anything Arabic. But you don't know why. And it just continues from there. Israel will fill in the reasons, or you imagine them. You could train anyone to believe anything like that. I'm just remembering many things I assumed which actually went the other way, because I'm not conditioned anymore.

Food is a cultural melting pot of origins we all know Houmous is originally lebanese but culture around take and adapt and make it in their own way, the same as Gyros is a greek amalgamation of the Shwarma? but is greek colonising? this is the dumbest take i have seen in awhile, Food was meant to be shared and iterated, just as Mallawach and Shoarma/Shwarma was adapted and reoriented also palestinians and israelis are cousins in origin, its like taking my cousins recipe and just changing a few spices to just make it my own.
this is more hatemongering to try and spin a tale to appropriate hatred towards a group. this is disgusting in its own right. Food is shared regardless of where it comes from. this is a dividing tactic again instead of putting people together.

I understand the sentiment and I have solidarity. On the other hand, let us be sharp with this narrative: culture cannot be stolen per se, and there is nothing wrong with people adopting things that originated somewhere else - that is how culture emerges in the first place. The issue is the power play, the domination, the erasure.

@@00Platypus00 Appropriation of cultural aspects, in a context of de humanization of the originators of said culture, is indeed ‘stealing’ & not ‘adopting’ - people in that position have too much contempt for the Objects of their theft to give them credit or respect their culture which they ‘learn’ from (beyond self-preservation considerations)

@@samo9275 I personally do not like to use the term "stealing" for this. I also do not like to use "credit"... These are both tied to ideas of ownership and possession that, in my humble opinion, should not be tied to culture. Culture can only exist with transmission, with communication, with exchange...and it should be valued beyond a sort of commodified notion of ownership.
But mind you, this is not a pressing issue, not something I'd fight over :) I agree with most of what you wrote, and 100% with the sentiment.

I’m so glad you’re covering this. I knew something was off when the state of Israel was claiming dishes like falafel, hummus, and shakshouka as Jewish. Actually Jewish cuisine is very delicious and are fine to claim. It was becoming clear to me that they were co-opting these dishes as a form of erasure.

Omg first time I had shaksuka was with Israelis in Australia when a was 19 years old traveling, I had zero clue at the time… few years later I studied politics and history of the Levant and learn about their lies! I always wondered after which country this dish came from and always didn’t feel like cooking it because the thieves taught it me… now I know Libya

YOU ARE LITERALLY OUT OF YOUR MIND.
In the 1970s when we were working our way out of the racism inextricably embedded in our DNA, we made great strides toward the belief that WE ARE ALL THE SAME. Although we have amazing stories to share from our separate ethnic history, WE ARE ALL HUMAN BEINGS first and foremost. Fast forward to 2024 when we retreat into our groups again? NO THANK YOU GENIUS. WTF are you doing besides encouraging division?? Please answer this simple question.

The original 1930s cookbook integrating the culture of Palestine seems fine. It's pretending that the Arab Palestinians contributed nothing to the food culture that makes it problematic. Otherwise, it's just like pizza being an American dish even though everyone knows it has Italian origins.
