Getting to spend real quality time with a parent is a blessing. One which cannot be fully appreciated until they're gone.

You're a wonderful son.............my mother is in the same boat, same age as well. She used to live in a condo in Florida, but she can no longer take care of herself (dementia) .She now lives in Thailand, she was a Thai native that was in the US since 1973......my father retired military passed away about 20 years ago. Because of the cost of living in the US, let alone assisted living or elder care is an astronomical financial cost, we decided that her best options is to live in Thailand, were she can afford to live and get assisted living & caretaker. We (my wife, my brother & I) talked it over, we're in our 50's and my wife had a heart attack last year, and she has chronic health/medical issues, she can't physically take care of her...........and neither could I since I still have to work fulltime for at least another 10 years. She did spend time with us for a few months, and with my brother. We plan to visit her in Thailand in the coming year, but only see her once a year. Spend what time you can with your parents if you can, but don't feel guilty about decisions you make, because in the end its what's best for everyone involved.

@@Mr1MOA thanks for the comment. I think it's really important to hear other people's stories because we can feel pretty isolated in these moments, going it alone. It must be hard to have your mother so far away but it seems best for her. It sounds like she needs alot of care. At least it's a wonderful place to visit when you can get over there.

Thank you for that. I just found out they cancelled his flight for today so I've been on the phone for five hours getting him a new flight for tomorrow. It's 4am here but he's all set and I'll fly to London Tuesday to accompagny him for the final leg in case it gets dicey...
