The Metabones compressing of the light is what increases the sharpness.
Yeah that does make sense when you actually see it in action
The true questions are:
1. Does particular glass (say APS-C) give better/worse image with speedbooster on M4/3 sensor than without a speedbooster on APS-C sensor? (because of course APS-C lens will look worse on M4/3 when you don't fit its image circle onto sensor)
2. Does a bigger glass (say APS-C) but with speedbooster on M4/3 sensor give better image than native M4/3 glass that have similar equivalent FOV and equivalent apeture?
I would say no to both however using a speedbooster can provide faster glass than what's currently available for micro 4/3.
Great video. I never thought of buying one of these. I’ll just take a few steps back or buy a wider lens for micro 4/3. I’m from the school of keep it simple. I had full frame for years and now use M 4/3.
You answered the exact question I couldn't find straight answers for. Everyone else was comparing an aps-c with a speed booster vs a full frame camera instead of comparing both on a crop sensor.
Awesome glad it helped
What lens and camera did you use to record yourself for this video?
This makes a lot of sense because with metabones your image is produced by the full glass elements of the lens whereas without the adapter your sensor is only utilizing part of the glass. Also on pricing a lot of the reason you pay more is for the Leica name.
Hey great review! I noticed from your description that you have the viltrox speedbooster as well. how would you compare the image quality of the viltrox versus the metabones?
Honestly I think the viltrox is worth every penny. I was very happy with the image quality. Sharpness in the center of the image is identical to the metabones. Once you get to the corners though the viltrox is softer and the metabones is still pretty sharp. The metabones XL also is better suited for full frame lenses and has a wider field of view.
@@JohnHarvey thank you. looking forward to more vids from you!
@@JohnHarvey thx for the insight. I just asked this exact question on one of your video.
with particular lens. not saying what was the setting in terms of apperture. I think each choose own criteria. And we talk about video or internet post images. small frame and corrected lens is so smart. Not sure what happen with prints for example.
How comes there are people reporting of issues with the speed booster then? Many people saying they notice a loss of sharpness and distortion? Are they using bad quality speedboosters? I'm asking because i'm genuinely interested, i've never used a speed booster before and i'm about to buy a Pocket 4K camera and want to make sure i'm getting the best from my Contax lenses...
Hey John people like you and this true working review are priceless for us film makers....thanks so much for your time brother.....still trying to decide whether to go blackmagic 4k with raw or gh5s......not the easiest decision in the world....love the slow mo in the gh5s and the rich colours....but shall i go raw.....anyone with any thoughts please shout out....im aware the blackmagic needs much more rig build up etc.....still its not the easiest buying choice in the world....thanks john! good examples.....
Very well presented. Nice work
Which lens did you use in this test? I know youre talking about the sigma 18-35, but is that the lens you were actually using? Because it is, as an apsc lens, not supposed to be used with the speedbooster xl.
I actually use several different lenses here. I use the Rokinon cine DS 50mm and 24mm. I also in the last shot used the sigma 18-35 @35mm if I remember right. You can absolutely use the sigma art with the metabones xl however you will get vignetting at a focal length below 24mm. Ever since I picked up the metabones XL I can use it from 24 to 35 mm. In video you can still use it at 18 mm if it's locked off on a tripod but it does dark in the corners just slightly. I really don't use it as much anymore since picking up the metabones XL and I really like the manual focus cine DS lenses anyway.
@@JohnHarvey But even the Rokinons are super35/apsc lenses I suppose, since they are called "cine". Why did you not get the speedbooster ultra if you use cine glass?
@@nordfresse actually the rokinons are designed to cover full frame sensors. They are called cine lenses because they have gears to adjust the focus and the aperture. Also they measure light transmission in T stops rather than F stops. There are cine lenses that cover micro 4/3, super 35 and even full frame. I used the XL because I wanted to use full frame lenses and get more light to the sensor.
Very interesting. Thanks!
Thank you for this
Is vignette present when using a metabone speedbooster with a sigma 18-35mm at 18mm?
With the .64 XL speedbooster Yes there is some vignette. With the .71 there is not
Woaw.. that was fast hahaha but hey, thanks man.. totally appreciate it
Hey John, thanks for the video!
I was wondering if you've done any tests comparing image quality of a setup using a speedbooster vs no adapter at all? ie. a E-mount lens on a E-mount camera vs the same lens with a EF mount plus E to EF speedbooster on a E mount camera. Hope the question makes sense:)
Unfortunately I don't have an E mount camera to play with anymore since my friend sold his A73 but maybe soon? I'll see what I can find
@@JohnHarvey Thanks John! I might get a rental and give it a go myself:)
awesome...thank you!
How does it compare to native glass in terms of resolution?
You did great bro
Thank you for taking the time for testing and making this video. It helped me a lot. I got G9 + Metabones XL + Canon EF 50mm F/1.2L, and I see huge color shift as the aperture value changes. (with white balance set manually.) Below F/1.6, the whole image gets a lot of purple tint, whereas for F/2.2 and up green tint gets introduced but not a lot. It could be a defective adapter or some kind of compatibility issue because I don't see this effect on my GX85. Do you happen to have any color-shifting problem with your G9+XL+Rokinon 50mm setup? (especially when aperture is wide open) Thanks.
Oh yes there is actually a slight magenta shift when wide open at f1.4. I try not to go below f1.8 (T2.0 on cine). I made another video before this about the rokinons and wide open shooting.
I think what your seeing is just the natural color shift of the lens. I don't think it's the adapter. I think this is quite common to see wide open lenses shift color a bit when wide open vs stopped down
So maybe it's just what it is. I was not so sure if the adapter is defective or this is something expected. Thank you for your reply!
@@JohnHarvey Thank you so much.
@@JohnHarvey This. A lens-maker can't afford to engineer their glass, coatings or tolerances to the extremes that a speedbooster can require at the prices that they charge for this lens grade.
Great video. Why did you pick the .64 metabones over the .71?
.64 is better for full frame lenses which is what I mostly use
@@JohnHarvey You mean .64 is better for Full Frame. ;) .71 is for APS-C.
Yeah that is right. Corrected
Hey. Is it worth getting a speedbooster for the bmpcc4k? Or can I just use a regular mft lens?
It totally depends on what you do. Back when I made this video it was very common to swap out, borrow and rent lenses for shoots and some of the most popular lenses to use were canon EF so a speed booster was really an essential tool. Especially when using a lot of different cine primes. If your a one man show or just shoot for fun or even don't mind investing pretty heavily in MFT come primes then I'd say go for the native lenses. I ditched the speed booster later for native lenses.
Did you used a native lens, and if so does it affects the af?
No you can't use native lenses with a speedbooster. All lenses used were Canon EF lenses
Lol, those damn cine Samyangs. I almost bought into them but I’m glad I didn’t. Go watch the lens guys episode from Duclos lenses. They’re built like garbage. Optics decent though, I’ll give them that, but I can buy a used Zeiss for the same price and it’ll last me until my great grand children are born, and I don’t plan on have kids!
where you getting ziess glass for that price tho
@@bryanoliveira9513 Online. The 50mm ZE is like $300 used, some other focal lengths are around $600-$800. Also you can get CY mounts for like $500 tops. The CY and ZE/ZF use the same lens formula, Until the milvus and otus they used the same formulas. The sony line uses a lot of old formulas just rehoused with autofocus. Some of them are new formulas though. But yeah you can get used zeiss for a good price. Samyang even has some that are $600-800. They just arent worth it if you ask me. But that doesn't mean they're garbage either. Also great for crash cam stuff.
Hey, thanks for sharing this, I have the same setup with Ultra .71 & Sigma 18-35(Nikon)
I see Chromatic aberration. All the time, but not really noticeable when playing Video!
I guess according to this video you would have a lot more chromatic aberration if you didn't have the speedbooster.
at what aperture was this test done ? in this test it shows that viltrox has sharpness issue wide open on sigma 18-35 ua-cam.com/video/dBhCBmp0SGk/v-deo.html so the metabone speedbooster is that much better than viltrox as far as sharpness wide open goes ?
I don't remember exactly. Probably wide open on the sigma. Probably T1.8 on the samyang. The viltrox does have some sharpness issues on the corners. Metabones really increases sharpness as opposed to no speedbooster.
Sweet! Looking to get the gh5s or the gh5. And God bless you bro and know that Jesus loves you fr. He's the only One who can give true rest. Jesus is God in the flesh. He died for our sins and rose again for our justification before Him (Romans 4:24-25). His love satisfied His wrath if you will repent and believe and follow Him because He loved you not to earn His love, and we are baptized to show our new life (Romans 6) . Just talk to Him through His Word the Bible, you can personally know God in love.
NUTTER!
