I really love this song, not just the message but the song itself. The passion in this song makes me quite emotional, much like the passion in "the unwelcome guest".
The phrase that Trevelyan used about the Irish Famine being the work of “an all-wise and merciful providence” smacks so much of Thatcher and the Protestant thing that good works don’t matter, only faith, or, in her case, fanatical conviction. I can’t help also thinking, though, that the miners’ strike could not be similarly policed today, with all the camera phones.
This photo reminds me an interview with a great artist Jay Munly: "(...)Billy Bragg, he did something for me. What kind of effect did he have on you? I don't think his album had even come out in the States yet. I think his EP had come out, so no one knew who he was, but he was on stage a few hours later. I was young at that time. I'm not sure that you were wrong Wisdom Pen. Protest songs have existed as long as people have oppressed each other. I think Billy would be one of the first people to say what a huge influence Guthrie was on him but why is that a bad thing? Even if you don't like him, I think his message is an important one and he probably brought Guthrie's work to people who wouldn't have otherwise known of him. That's got to be a good thing.
