Thank you so much for making this video. My family and I used to come here every year since I was 13. My brother, cousin, and I would play tag on these elevators! It’s so nice to see how I remember it 💜
@georgef551 Banjo is the term for any Dover traction or any bad traction elevator. All Dover tractions are banjos, whereas with OTIS, Monty, etc., only the bad ones are banjos.
@TJElevatorfan i agree. riding this elevator would be fun. sometimes the highest floors do different things. their lobby is spectacular. how do you take a still while you are filming?
@suzzex Oh, The slipping is what I thought it meant, because the Banjo listed lifts I seen, had jerky camera movement, from jerky operation. I figured the cables, when slipping, vibrate like "Banjo Strings" when that happens. Guess the def is a little more open than just that. One of the Best Westerns in NYC had big-time ones. I nearly jammed my knee stepping into one of theirs. It was the one touted as World's Largest BW in the mid 80's.
How can you tell these are Dover? I do notice the Dover Repulse (that's what I like to call Dover Vandal Resistant) fixtures but everything else appears to be Fujitec. Most high buildings like this use Fujitec elevators. These might be FujiDovers. LOL!
My friend was asking why you didn't get off at 18. And 2 more things. 1, that beep is annoying. It sounds like a smoke alarm. And 2, I think the service elevators are banjos. And the main ones were modded by Murphy.
Superstitious people would probably sue the hotel if it included a 13th floor because they wouldn't want to live on a floor with a number that represents bad luck.
I believe "Banjo" referrs to one that slips as it starts and/or stops, giving you that not-so-smooth feeling.

I really like the lantern chime on the 16th floor.
That's my favorite hotel! I used to go down there every summer but we havn't been in about 3 years.
I rode this last week! That part where you go through the ceiling is freaky.

Yep
I saw some elevators at 2:22; are those staff only elevators?
Cool!
You should have gone on the service elevators as seen at 2:22 while you were there because they appear to be original.
Nathan Andrew Davis Can't ride them you know.
Are they like locked off?
Nathan Andrew Davis Yeah.
