A spoiler free review of a book called "They Both Die at the End" lol

I find the spoiler in the title a bit hilarious. I kept expecting it to be a twist or joke or something lol

This book MURDERED me. I never really read contemporary (if I do, it's contemporary low fantasy) but THIS BOOK. The ending absolutely killed me. I thought I was prepared and I knew it was coming, but it didn't feel real until I read it.

right? also its so ironic and symbolic how it happens to each of them that the fact that they both die at the end is not the spoiler you have to be worried about lol. i swear i couldn't believe it when it happened

i haven’t actually read this one yet, but i have read “history is all you left me” by adam silvera and i think his books being very gripping page-turners is a quality they all share. i think what he is best at is capturing human emotions, the good, the bad and the ugly, sort of - his characters feel real and have defining features, mentalities and coping mechanisms, and they are all flawed to a certain degree. i’m actually really looking forward to reading this! if it’s anything like his other books, i will most likely enjoy it. i’m glad you did too!

Damn... you give great review. Heading over to Amazon to check the sample of this book. In the meantime, I had this thought for T5W. Often when I look at samples, it's very rare that a book grabs me right away and makes me want to purchase. Do you have a top 5 books that have grabbed you from the very first page?

I was okay with not knowing how Death-Cast works. The book only captured one day in the lives of Mateo, Rufus, and some other characters. I think if Adam Silvera ever decides to write a companion novel, he can provide answers there. It would be interesting if the characters in the 2nd book worked for Death-Cast or knew someone who does. I don't know. At least, characters who have more than one day to live... :)

I love this book!! Its sssoo good. I started crying just by watching your review! Lol I love that the 2 main characters were males. I heard that Adam was originally goimg to make the characters male amd female. It was also pretty cool reading the POV of different characters.

I'm the opposite of you in the sense that I enjoy contemporary when the language is of the present; however, I completely understand your point about it dating the book.
I do love contemporary so I didn't mind that there was less of a focus on the sff part. I don't think it was a major focus of the book so I was fine without knowing more about the deathday aspect.
What threw me off at the beginning of the book were the additional POVs of minor characters. However, I begin to enjoy how every person they met had their own story and it ended up being interesting. I also gave it a 4/5. This too is my first Adam Silvera book and I look forward to reading more of his work.

For a second I thought it was not gonna happen and then it did. This book totally wrenched me. I didn't even care that the whole deathcast was not explained.

SAME! Yes, it really bothered me that we didn't understand very much about Death Cast. There were times when someone would remark about "oh well they didn't get a call so we know they're okay" it just felt like a really plot hole-y device. I am interested in reading another book by this author that doesn't have the Death Cast type element.

I wish I liked this book more. I loved the whole concept of it and knowing that these characters would actually die at the end of the book, but the execution fell short for me. I didn't feel anything and especially the whole falling in love part was not necessary for me. It was so insta-lovey. I wish Adam would have kept them friends.

    • @dani010203stor
      @dani010203stor 3 роки тому

i think the fact that they fell in love so fast could be forgiven in this case couse they KNEW it was their last day. they were terrified and angry and sad. also each of them helped the other to live their life at its fullness. without shame, fear or regret. they had never lived so free, so you would tell they love how they made each other feel. Mateo loved the life and the version of himself that Rufus showed to him. or that Rufus helped him set free. and viceversa. and its not that crazy to love the person who opened for you those doors.
So yeah, im not a fan of insta love stories. but in this particular case i think it could make sense.

I really enjoyed They Both Die at the End. I listened to the audio book and flew through it in two days. I was wondering how you felt about the points of views outside of Mateo and Rufus? I just finished the book and few days ago and I’m still not sure how I feel about the extra POVs

Hi Sam!! Great analysis, as always you highlight all the elements I look for in books.
I don’t know why this book calls me a lot (and that’s weird because it’s one of my least favorite genres).
    I may give it a go😊

I recently read this book as well! I enjoyed it too. I enjoyed the suspense in the book, because from all the other perspectives we get in the book you really think the boys are going to die earlier than they did XD.
And what killed me was the WAY they both died. Don't want to spoil for anyone just browsing through your comments, but man, the irony of both their deaths was just... I can't even.
Personally, History Is All You Left Me is my fave Adam Silvera book and one of my all-time favorite books. He doesn't use a gimmick in it, it's just raw, punch you in the stomach pain XD.
More Happy Than Not has a gimmick. It's also really good.

I didnt read the book but maybe maybe the reason the author didnt give that much information about that strange technology is because the author had other themes in mind like appreciating every moment
That's my analysis based of your video

Sorry to go off topic but I recently thought of a book that might fit into your request for creepy forest recommendations. The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill. It is middle grade but it is a fantastic story and has a creepy forest/witch in the woods part.

I finished this book a couple days ago and gave it two stars. I was so looking forward to reading this, I thought this would be my new favourite. Unfortunately I found myself unable to relate to the characters which is really just the kiss of death for any book for me. There are short sections throughout the book dedicated to other people and I found those to be much more compelling, the character I related the most to being a journalist who also gets the alert. To be honest, I spent a lot of this book wondering if my difficulty relating to these characters was because they were male, since I'm very much into reading female voices at the moment. Perhaps I just read this at the wrong time?
But I also feel like this book kind of dragged. I didn't find there to be any real tension because I didn't believe the contemporary love story elements would allow for too much unexpected tragedy. Before you hit the halfway mark you kind of know what to expect from the other short sections. One of the elements I thought was missing from this book was a perspective of the Death Cast from someone who was neither a Decker nor involved with one. Instead the interconnectedness of all the Deckers and co. felt unrealistic and kept bringing me out of the story.
I would still recommend this book to others. Many on booktube have loved it, and it has a blazing rating on Goodreads. Just not for me I'm afraid.

I also hard a hard time really connecting to them. I liked Mateo but Rufus not so much. That's what I mean about the gimmick. I'll be interested to see how I feel after some time has passed because while I found it a fun book to binge read, I don't think it will age well.

Agreed. Oh man, I wish they would have removed the word 'yo' from Rufus' vocab. Especially towards the end.
