    As a door guy I generally will move the strike plate up or down and router it. But many people don't have a router or the door jig or the right bits to do such a job. This is a great way around that

    SEL, Great vid! 30-year high-end finish carpenter here. I'd like to point out you said safety "glasses" but showed goggles. I know it sounds minor but people should definitely use full wrap goggles like those you showed while using Tungsten Carbide burrs on metal. The tiny filings the burr removes are micro-scalpel sharp and are so fine they fly around quite a bit. Regular safety glasses allow these minuscule razors to float right into your eyes past regular lenses/frames/side shields. Also DO NOT perform this or clean up with bare hands. Wear Nitrile (not fabric) gloves! The shards will easily embed in your skin much like fiberglass. The irritation is the same. Believe me I learned the hard way, they will even embed through the toughest calluses on a tradesman's hands

    Bought a carbide burr drill bit and shaved off a few millimeters off of my strike plate and it did the trick. Thanks for the tip! I Personal tip, I taped my vacuum hose directly under the strike plate while drilling to suck all of the metal shaving directly into the vacuum. Mess free!

    The longer screws are a good idea, but if the strike is not hitting the strike plate correctly, check your reveal around your door. Also, check the reveal across the top of the door. You can put shims behind the hinges and move the door in any direction. If the reveal on both sides and across the top is even, the strike will hit the strike plate correctly. The door jamb might have settled and may need to be wedged up. Don't move or grind on the strike plate. It is possible that the door or jamb was hung incorrectly. Sorry about complaining, but what you are describing is not your department. Sounds like the job for a carpenter. Sorry again, contact me if I can help.

    I wish more locksmiths would do this. I call it "total door evaluation". I first check the hing screws like you did, paying attention to the top hinge. I use longer screws too to draw it up. Many times this is the only fix needed, plus lube the locks as a general practice. I never work on a lock without lubing it. Your customers love how the door works when you do this.

    Great video. I have the same issue with a door. A friend told me to use my wife's lipstick and dab it on the latch. Then pull the latch in , close the door and release the latch. The lipstick will leave a mark as to where the latch it hitting the striker.
    Also I'm with you %100 on the eye protection. If I don't have safety glasses or the like I won't do the job till I do. Learned that one the hard way. Got a splinter in my eye. Nurse removed it with a syringe and yes , I was awake for it. The most uncomfortable feeling you can imagine.

    I was worried about the suggestion to permanently modifying the strike plate but he did go over the main issues to address for the cause of misalignment which imo is the real fix. Occasionally a doorway has so much settling or warpage that modifying the plate may be necessary but there are also strike plates that are oversize that will allow you to totally reposition the plate and still look factory made as it will cover the original mortising. Thanks for sharing.

    After the longer screws in the hinges, I just lower the strike plate. First after removing it i cut and whittle a piece of chopstick or even just a branch from outside. drive it into the existing holes. chisel out for lowering the strike, then use a self-centering drill bit and install the strike a little lower.

    This is an idea for an interior door but I don't know I want to do this on an exterior door as the metal would be compromised. I would recommend a security strike plate for one thing. It doesn't matter how long the screws of if they stay in place and that strike plate gives away because the metal was shaved down too thin.

      You can definitely try it carefully and safely, worst case you can always call a professional handyman or carpenter to help you out.

    Put the long screw on the innermost hinge location, not the outer ones. Most times you won’t hit the framing.

    • @douglasschmidt9929
      @douglasschmidt9929 3 роки тому

      The center "inner" screw is the one that crabs the cripple stud and pulls door up and corrects sagging along door latch side. Sometimes still doesnt provide enough lift. Then either file or drop latch plate.

    Always use the long screw in the hole that is next to the stop, by using the screw hole you used you may not hit the stud, you may hit between the drywall and the stud. Another way is to swap the top hinge for the bottom one.

    Carry lip stick in your tool bag great for finding out where the latch sits on the strike plate and wipes off easy…. Also there’s a tool called a hinge doctor great for fixing bent hinges! I hate grinding strike plates, if the locks and hinges are installed correctly there should be no reason to grind down the strike. In my own house fuck it I would just to fix it quick but in a customers house definitely not!

      I agree with you in a customers house you might wanna fix the hinge.
      But this video is meant for do it yourself type of home easy fix
      And if you want to fix the problem the professional way so definitely what you just said it’s the right thing to do.

    I see you used self drilling screws.
    note: if you don't drill pilot holes, unless the wood is really soft, there is a good chance your wood will split and be permanently damaged and the screws won't hold as well , right?

    • @joaquinsuarez6090
      @joaquinsuarez6090 3 роки тому +1

      Yes, wood will split with longer screws without pre drilling pilot holes.

    If anyone comes across a loose door latch or deadbolt and wants a solid repair that doesn't involve glue, stick, putty, or that ugly metal sleeve that ruins the look of your door, ReSecure Latch is that answer. ReSecure Latch sits inside the door alongside the latch, resecuring your loose latch from the INSIDE. Great for property maintenance, homeowners, and DYiers.

    Good video.
    But when you put the longer screws in at the top hinge, I would have taken out all three screws and raised up the door from the bottom with some thin wood, and then put the longer screws in.

    I wouldn't put really long screws into the jamb as they would come out The other side into the gib groove if it's set up that way. Probably be ok if the jamb is flush with the gib but then you will be into the framing which might cause the door frame to move as you tighten the screws. Screws that are as long as the jamb is thick will suffice. It's ok to put longer screws into the door though.

    Ok, that is kinda easy and I've done that many times. What if the latch lines up with the plate but the door still don't latch? You have to push the door real hard to get it to latch or the door may not latch at all. what then?
