ANYONE can join the Boston Gay Men's Chorus. This is the case for all Gay Men's Chorus' in the U.S. There is no discrimination of any kind in these groups. One type of person I have yet to see in a Gay Men's Chorus is an actual woman. Why? I honestly don't know.
@@dmaxsba The reason is that a men's chorus (of any kind) is musically a specific choice for the sound. There are lots of mixed voice choruses that include women and men, and in this case, BGMC is a men's chorus in the same way that any men's chorus would be: for the sound and musical arrangements. There are also many women's choruses for that reason, too.
@@oub57 Far from useless, actually. There is a powerful reason to be a gay men's chorus: to offer a safe place for gay men to be a community and sing together. Not exclusively gay men, as evidenced by straight and non-gay members of the chorus, but specifically to tell the world and the LGBT+ people of the world that there is a safe space to express LGBT+ voices and stories. Given that many places in the world would imprison or harm the very same people purely for the word "gay" being used publicly, this is an extremely potent reason to be a gay men's chorus and not just a men's chorus.
@@dmaxsba The San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus had a woman conductor for a while, and I think at least one of the pianists was a woman. I recall seeing a GMC video with a woman singer, but I don't remember which chorus it was. ua-cam.com/video/Qdv6U6QBnHg/v-deo.html
