This is balancing done right. They've made it less safe with the Foresight Slash nerf but introduced a host of new moves that expand the kit so that the old power of FSS can be accessed, and making the process of getting there more fun with those new moves.
I love this weapon even more than i did, and i didnt think that was possible
Ngl, I’m kinda sad that they nerf foresight slash. I knew it was busted, but it was fun, and that’s all that mattered to me :((

I feel like it's worth pointing out that using slinger ammo mid spirit combo allows you to turn your character in whatever direction you're facing while shooting, and continue the combo in that direction. Otherwise good tips and tricks for new players.

@@lourdf0x tbh I don't remember, haha. It's been more than a year since I played MHW, and I played on PC with customized M/KB layout.
@@lourdf0x L2 anytime youre doing your R2 combo, and just point your stick in the direction you want to face before hitting L2

I hated longsword when I first used it cuz I would always fail getting it leveled up but I’ve been enjoying it recently after learning about the meter building attack you mentioned a lot.. but now also knowing u can slinger shot mid combo to guarantee the full spirit combo is amazing!

Quick disclaimer though, if you're going to be spending more time using Iaido rather than YOLOhelm splitter, you WILL want at least 2 slots in Quick Sheathe because it speeds the sheathing animation for draw attacks, too.
Iai spirit slash can chain into helm breaker almost immediately just like how for switchaxe the heavenward flurry can chain into discharge. So it would be really damaging if you manage to use the iai spirit slash to counter a monster's attack and immediately follow up with helm breaker since you'll still have red bar if you successfully counter with the iai spirit slash

BOY! As a dual blades main i cannot imagine How It would be to have a new attack that would actually change original gameplay in the slightest.
You should mention that you can change direction in way you want during a helmbreaker by choosing a direction and press Y/triangle. You can easily do a full 180° or more

A tip with the new slider shot Possible during the spirit combo, it too can be used to reorient yourself using The movement stick, so if mid combo the monster darts to your left side to where you aren’t hitting it anymore, you can slinger burst to the left and continue the combo facing the monster again.

I know I'm late here, but Iai Spirit Slash can be followed up by Helmbreaker. If you hit that sheath counter and manage to pull off helm it's hella good.
Terminarch I was about to comment the same thing. I would say that’s the big daddy combo. If you do that then you’re golden.

Been waiting on the weebstick 101 to upgrade into the weebmaster 9000 for over 10 yrz. Finally! Iai Quickdraw boiz! XD great vid~
You can also forsight-cancel into sheth, just like the helmbraker. Id be interesting to See how much quick sheth is gonna Speed up the move
it's better to foresight into roundslash into sheath tho for the gauge refresh, although i guess if the monster was gonna do two quick attacks you could foresight into iai for double counter, but likely requires quick sheath lv3 to make it consistent.
Sooo all of the longswords moves not only look cool but have a use and practicality to them. This is soo frikking cool.
Looks like as long as you pick and choose careful times to use helm breaker you can pretty much just stay on the offensive and react to the monster mid combo since you can now sheath cancel the spirit roundhouse. Obviously you still gotta be wary and cautious but this new “free flow” seems too good. Love it!

Worth noting too is a R2 Input after a fade slash performs a jumping spirit slash, this is great because the fade slash skips the first hit of the spirit combo, offers you more positioning options in addition to building meter. Definitely my go to combo since you can also incorporate a triangle attack as well es a slinger Burst into the combo, also the fist overhead spirit slash is slow and waists meter.

I came here because I've been playing oldschool style (simple attacks + spirit slashes) all the way to G2 (the "master rank" 2 as it's been renamed) and figured I should probably learn some better combos at some point to speed things up a bit xD
That sheathe attack reminds me a bit of the Valor style counter from MHGU and is a game changer, since I no longer have such a massive pause after the final spirit slash, which is cool, and also seems to be a bit OP in terms of leveling up the spirit gauge to red, as the gauge just keeps filling up while you do the spirit combos.
I had to adapt the controls to my PC equivalent, but it's easy to understand anyway, so thanks for the vid! :)
The Iai slash is also useful for getting more damage in small windows. Sometimes I’m able to pull off a helmbreaker, spirit combo and barely iai slash at the end of a knockdown.
What I’ve noticed is that foresight can dodge any attack even if it’s on top of you. However when too close to the barrel it is impossible with the ial slash/ial draw counters. Foresight doesn’t care about any attack as long as we have gauge. The ial counter requires a bit of setup. Not too bad.
Actually I think i've countered with the iai right on the barrel beneath, touching my feet practically. i couldn't get the timing when I was further way from the barrel. It's still basically a glorified greatsword tackle of sorts, but gonna be good for the pros. they probably didn't like how foresight was so easy to pull off so they played it safe and made iai counters stricter.
I heard the timings of foresight was also nerfed but it seemed fine to me
PWARGaming people thought it was nerf before they figured it was gauge we needed. When I have gauge it feels the same. And whenever I try to use ial counter on top of the barrel it’s just impossible. By like 3 steps or 4 away and I have no problem.

I have heard japanese streamers commenting about how the Iai spirit slash counter window becomes longer the higher your spirit level is, could you test it so that we can find out?
@@firabanana6525 I'm gonna say false, i noticed no difference between gauges with either variation, timing felt strict regardless of color. And, like helm breaker, you likely wouldn't use iai spirit slash other than in red, as you're better off doing normal spirit slash into foresight slash instead to counter an attack to upgrade your gauge to red, rather than than merely ignoring an attack from stunning you with iai counter. It's purpose is very niche. if it ignored dmg or upgraded gauge upon perfect counter it would be a different story, but it doesn't, so it's just an extra dmg swing, or a way trickier to do greatsword tackle.

Now this is my type of LONGSWORD breakdown!!! I was doing exactly, and I mean exactly, this during the Beta both weekends! When I finally got to play with some of my squad....I had a teammate going crazy insane talking about how relentless I was with it!
I mean he surprised me with how impressed he was...(I consider him a stronger player than I)...but he was talking about ,”Well we know who is gonna be getting the damage dealer stamp come September!”

I heard that iai slash counterwindow timer starts when you take the damage, can you confirm that? I tried testing it but the timing is so tight I can't really tell.
You can also chain together helm, spirit slash, helm if you have the 3 full gauges
more ways to flinch other players, i see 🤣

This all make sense now for the nerf. You build meter and get to Red spirit gauge so much easily now.

Because of the Iai Slash, it's actually more of a balance thing for Foresight to require some charge...

so i got a problem: I play on nintendo switch pro controller and in this video you do the slash by pressing r2 and x which is to dodge. Now when i try to do this i press r2 and b which is my button to dodge my character just dodges instead of going into sheath

You can move as much as you want but you barely go anywhere when you do the spirit helm breaker to actually aim you have to also press triangle again in the air toward the monster part you wanna hit

NGL, I've been sticking to Foresight Slash as my counter, solely because the Iai Spirit Slash's timing is just too strict, and the penalties are too high if you don't make it. I'm going to keep practicing it, but as of now, it's just not worth the risk for me to bother with in most fights.

Im new to the longsword, and im confused am i doing something wrong? I can barely get the second overhead slash off before monsters like rathians trample me four or five times, i wanna learn this weapon so bad, but im terrified to use it on more than even a jagra, because i cant get the combos off to fill the gauge before the monster just kills me

Any tips on why everytime I press L2 & circle it doesn't clutch claw right away?
it requires me hitting L2 & R3 than pressing circle but sometimes doing this my person would do a normal lockon for the monster instead of engaging the clutch claw.

My very first weapon in the game was a Long Sword, then I was surrounded by Insect Glaive enthusiasts, tried the Bow and really liked the ability to dodge on that, used the Hunting Horn to buff people before Iceborne came out, my woman uses Switch Axe which I found to be very fun, and now I have come full circle out of sheer curiosity.
Right I dont have a main as I use all weapons.

Can someone please tell me how to combo like in 6:43? U can upgrade gauge without full R2 attack? 12 minutes video and he didn't tell about this
