Will it Run? - eBay Purchase Bachmann N Scale SD40-2 - Trains with Shane Ep4

  • This time on Trains with Shane I have a Bachmann Spectrum SD40-2 (one of two) that I purchased on eBay a few weeks ago. They were both listed as "parts". My hope was to hopefully have enough good parts between them for one good runner as the SD40-2 is my favorite diesel road locomotive of all time. Let's see what we've got!
Spookshow's information on the Bachmann SD40-2's evolution

My SD40-2, it's the very same as your's, except mine is a CP, wishing it was a CN, oh well. Before disassembling it, my directional lights worked great, but after cleaning, and oiling it, using other videos as to how much oil, or grease to use, I reassembled it, tested it, everything works great, but for the lights. If I go forward, the back light comes on, and visa versa, I disassembled it, flipped the motor over thinking I put it in the wrong way, no difference, I'm now stumped. I'll get her figured out. Thanks again for your videos, there are 5 of you guys I watch now on a constant basis, now I'm just working on them without help of videos most of the time, sometimes there isn't a video for some of the engines I have, so I've winged it, but once you get the hang of it, it's like riding a bike, you don't forget too easily. I'm grateful to you different guys for the videos you put out.

Keep up the good work! Practice makes perfect, and I started roughly the same as you from watching SMT Mainline also :) I've got 5 N scale trains and one HO scale. Then just got thru rebuilding a friend's 1938 Lionel 1666 with whistling tender car, full set, now fully operational

Chris rebuilds a bunch of Lionel O gauge stuff. He even did some ancient Marx stuff.

If you can find them, VCR head cleaning sticks might work for cleaning motors..They don't leave any lint...Use with a plastic safe electronics cleaner.

I may or may not revisit these. They're junk, lol. Completely worn out. But they run now at least. I tinkered with them again a little bit after this video.

The Bachman 5250 was my first North American loco purchase waaay back in the 90s I’ve lost the fuel tank along the way and she’s always sounded rough but will *always* run regardless of the track condition so she’s one of my favourites despite being much poorer quality than my newer units. I may have to have a go at giving her a thorough service

A good service never hurt. Clean her up. Where in the world do you call home? if it doesn't cost a bunch to ship you can have one of these fuel tanks for your unit.

Great video! Thank you for this. I just picked up a Bachmann SD40-2 at a train show still in box and the lights come on but she won't quite run. She made it about 8 inches. This video gives me some insight on how to investigate further. Thanks again :)

Thanks Dave! Keep in mind this is an older Bachmann Spectrum unit. So the insides of yours may be slightly different but it should still be pretty straightforward to take apart and service. The newer Bachmann units are actually quite good by comparison to this dinosaur.

Bases on the box coloring, mine is a dinosaur! Straight up Bachmann, not even Spectrum grade. Thanks for the encouragement, I enjoy your vidoes

@@davec8401Then the mechanism will be very similar. If the unit has white plastic axle gears check them carefully for splits along the axle axis. That would cause your locomotive to run and then suddenly stop.

Can you clean the trucks with a sonic cleaner?

    • @Trains-With-Shane
      @Trains-With-Shane  2 роки тому

Almost certainly. But I don't have an ultrasonic cleaner yet. It's on the list of things to get but it's a few items down at the moment.

@@Trains-With-Shane You can use it on all your n-scale too ! It wont hurt the plastic, except for painted surfaces. Really great for cleaning the gunk out of trucks.

I did. Although not very well. Both of these units were incredibly clapped out and not maintained well if at all.

I had to watch this to see other people dealing with Bachmann junk. I have two 8- 40c locomotives i put Tsunami sound in , they ran horrible. I ended up reworking one loco extensively to run correct. This required hard wiring tthe trucks , milling the frame , cutting the oem board. Then disassembling the trucks completely making my own wipers and new middle pick up out of brass. Bachmanns frames need more weight, the trucks are to loose , the wheels are not in gauge. Then the gears on the wheel axles have to much slop in them. Also the frame halfs are uneven. I had to sand the bottoms to keepnthe locomotive level. Plus be careful taking rhe trucks apart. The plastic is so cheap you can easily break the tabs and you will need a replacement. Also you could pull the brushes out to clean the contact better. I usually wash all the parts in warm water with lite detergent.

I think that's more work than i'm willing to put into these old Bachman units even for the purposes of demonstration. These days I stick to more recently manufactured units. Even the newer Bachmann stuff is much better than these old first gen Spectrums. Although I think the larger issue with these older units was that they were incredibly worn out by the previous owner/owners.

@@Trains-With-Shane it came to a point I was going to get the problem solved. Also I stick with mostly Atlas or Kato now. I suggest non seasoned locomotive repair and maintenance people do the same.

There aren't hardly any places around me that deal in trains period not to mention used styff. If I don't buy stuff online I usually have to wait for the train show that comes around once a year. Which is in about 2 weeks for the fall show so i'll be grabbing some stuff for sure. Most of the hobby shops around me are focused around radio controlled stuff.
