This port is actually very impressive considering the image quality and environment density for running on the switch. Props to the porting team and on handheld, I bet it looks great
Witcher 3 complete with all the added DLC is still the gold standard for Switch ports. I'm still blown away they crammed that masterpiece onto a tiny Switch cartridge.
It's absolutely not. The game is smaller because every setting imaginable is paired back. It's arguably one of the least impressive ports we've seen, particularly compared to this. The 'gold standard' is arguably Alien:Isolation, looks fantastic, and if remarkably close to the PS4 version.
Comparing Alien Isolation and these open world games are not equal in terms of power required to run. The open world games will always require less details than those with small environments.
Well it kind of is, games like the witcher 3 and doom (including dying light) are games that challenged ps4/xone era of consoles thus make it almost bizarre that it can run on such limited hardware like the switch. That's one of the things that makes the Switch so impressive imo. The fact that we can play the same game that PCs and next gen consoles have, without any major sacrifices, is just amazing. I grew up with the GBA and while I will always love that system, it didn't have that same ability that the Switch has.
@@TheMrfoxguy Not saying they weren't. My point is though that if a game was released on Gamecube and then Gameboy, they almost played like 2 different titles. We no longer have to deal with that anymore.

I'm going to 100% honest here: I laughed like hell when Nintendo initially revealed how weak the Switch was. Developers have not only made me eat my words but also made me want to buy a Switch. Now if Nintendo could just sort out their online...
I fear we will stop seeing ports of major titles to the Switch in the near future because the PS5 and Xbox Series have raised the bar for baseline performance requirements so much.
@@FutureNaught cloud computing is already planned on coming to the switch, allowing users with sufficient internet to stream to it at up to 4k 60fps. One of the first titles coming to switch that will use it is Dying Light 2.
This is pretty damn impressive and proof the Switch has more juice in tank. Absolute shame that we're going to get a million cloud versions before all is said and done.
With the steam deck being around the corner im pretty sure that a large portion of the player base that is interested in portable aaa gaming will migrate from the switch to the steam deck, which will cause the Userbase that would buy these games on switch to decrease. At the same time new games will focus more and more on the new consoles, which will make downscaling even harder than from Xbox one and PS4. So I wouldn’t be surprised if most aaa games will be presented as cloud games in the future, just much easier to do
I agree the problem is not that the Switch cannot handle the games... The problem is the budget. It takes too much time work and sacrifices to make those games work on Nintendo Switch. They can be ported but it takes millions and millions of dollars and many many months and even years to port a game properly to the Switch while a cloud version is just 2 clicks and that's it really easy simple and easy to archive and cheaper (what those companies care more the cost of production).
I think it Will sell good. They been suppprting the other consoles And released stuff up until today I think this Will take off on the switch since it is a lovely game to play co op
That’s exactly why a lot of devs are going the cloud route for the Switch now. They all hoped the switch Oled was gonna have the hardware upgrade needed but since then most just do cloud cause it’s not worth porting (especially with how challenging it can be to balance it on Switch) when Switch ports aren’t a great enough return compared to Sony and Xbox ports
DDD even more so. If they want to make 0.2 and 3 cloud ports, great; but I see a lot of people saying, “well, they’re based on the PS3 versions and that console is hard to make ports to current consoles.” SE is straight up being lazy. If Deadly Premonition, one of the most poorly optimized PS3 games, can be ported to Switch with instances of it hitting 60 fps, KH 1.5+2.5+DDD should also be very doable.

So good!” You guys seem to always praise switch for its limitations. But, call out Xbox or PS5 for the slightest difference even if it looks phenomenal. You guys gotta work on that seriously.
The PS5 is SUPPOSED to be next gen. Meaning better visuals, more features, faster load times, higher fps, overall better hardware in general. The switch is a 4-5 year old handheld meant for nintendo games but also happens to have the option of docking it to your tv. I think youre the one who needs to do some rethinking...
@@iSeeEZEkill you’re moving Goal post the switch is Nintendos next gen platform. And if after 4 years it’s been tapped out in performance then that’s just poor hardware. We are still getting amazing looking games on the PS4 which is 8 years old. So, you have an 8 year old device stomping the “console” (a title Nintendo fans swear it is since it released, but now 3 years into its life it’s a beefy handheld…*rollseyes*) I don’t know why people like you and even then won’t call Nintendo out for their trash business practices. As the consumers we should not be settling for below mediocre from a multi-billion dollar company. Just because it’s been in your childhood so long. You shouldnt believe everything you tell yourself.
@@iSeeEZEkill you should take your own advice from that last statement. A miracle would be getting dying light running on a 3DS or vita. The switch has been running PS4 and Xbox games for a while in an extremely inferior manner at that. It runs Doom, Wolfenstein 2, Witcher 3 and now dying light… a miracle is running a one off of say ratchet and clank on it. But when you have proven these newer titles run on it at poor settings it’s not a miracle. It’s an excuse for Nintendo period, one folks like you continue to give them. And seeing them glamorize this as I have been watching this channel for over a decade now and watched them pick and choose when something is a miracle from Nintendo and “unbearable” on PS4/Xbox and it’s something they are frequently guilty of over exaggerating. Even when they needed to zoom in 600% on previous analysis to prove how bad something was. But, perish the thought you call it like it is and say Dying light on switch is more of a telling of how behind Nintendo continues to be and you guys keep eating it up.
Bought this port day one because I love Dying Light and I'm amazed at how well this was ported, even more so to hear that the devs are still patching it to improve it even more.
Looks really great. The unlocked framerate is a chance for overclocked models. I hope the developer is smart enough to give players an option instead of just locking the frame rate to 30FPS. Even tho 60FPS will probably out of the question, 40-50FPS should certainly be possible on an unlocked Switch in handheld mode, as long as its plugged into a power supply.
@@lalunabelle3 The reason I doubt it is my experience with Bioshock Infinite with the 60FPS mod. At regular clockspeeds the game runs very close around 30FPS, overclocked to 768MHz it mostly reaches 40-50FPS. I do realize that the max OC is at 921MHz, but in most games that results in 100% fan speed at all times, which is super annoying.

@@michaelmyersplays4992 surely being amazed at this quality on the Switch implies somebody doesn't think the Switch is powerful though... How stupid are you?
I am BLOWN AWAY with how this game runs/looks on the Switch. I already owned/played it on the PC, but when it went on sale on the Switch, I had to bite. I only played about 4 hours of it on the PC, but on the Switch, I'm hooked.. in portable AND docked mode. Had I not seen the side-by-side examples in this video, I wouldn't have even noticed the visual differences. It's THAT good on the Switch. Compared to other ports, Wolfenstein being a simple example, it's just so much better from a framerate AND visual perspective. Like, night and day better. It just PLAYS so well. From loading to framerate to anything you can think of. It feels polished. If this game was a Switch exclusive, it would (in my opinion) easily be its top seller and a true technical marvel standout. Here's another thing I noticed on the switch that isn't spoken about in this video. When playing this game in portable mode, the Switch stays *noticeably* cooler than it does in some of my other games. And that, in turn, gives me incredible battery life while playing this game. It's shocking really. My suspicion is that the patch which fixed the 36fps spikes (and locked it to 30) gave the hardware some 'headroom' - IE - it's not running full-tilt the entire time. Which is also impressive..
Man, Wolfenstein looks horrible on Switch. I bought it to have something to play on a plane trip knowing it would be a downgrade, but I just didn't realize how bad it would be. The worst part is the dynamic resolution. It's horrible and that alone makes it unplayable before I ever got to experience any performance issues.
Great video John. Really interesting means they used to develop the port. The upscaling looks super good. Haven’t played dying light so may just get it
Looks like an absolutely incredible port, up there with the best we’ve seen to date. Once again the team behind this little gem have outdone themselves. I’ve already bought the game and completed it on PC and Xbox, but I might have to grab it a third time. Good job!
When it comes to graphics, the biggest downfall is the sun… the sun in dying light was some of the best sunlight effects in any game I’ve played. And it was just such a staple for this game IMO. So it’s unfortunate, but realistically minor.
I will say it doesn’t look bad. Still looks great. Just isn’t quite as fantastic as it looks elsewhere. Since the last update though I’ve notice even more choppiness, which is weird since they capped it at 30. Not sure why it’s happening.. but still definitely worth getting!!
I’d like to say though on the topic of shadows when first mentioned, but also when I have the screen (albeit on mobile phone) paused @ 7:27 that I find the ‘lower quality shadowing’ on the Switch (because of ‘underpowered’ hardware as you say) more naturally or real world looking so to speak. From memory, I don’t recall shadows outside from lets say buildings or foliage to be always so super sharp or always having such ‘sharp’ edges. So in short, I find the less sharp shadows less distracting and more pleasing on average to this point in the video when I actively think about it because you are talking about it if that makes any sense.
In real life, shadow strength depends on the intensity of the sunlight and the amount of ambient light. On a bright day with no clouds, it's possible to get shadows that sharp from sunlight. I agree that blurry shadows tend to look more realistic on average - though perhaps not quite blurry to this extent - since sunlight shadows look like that most of the time.
The game does a weird thing with my Sony Bravia tv. Every so often or when I walk into a different area it seems to change the resolution settings on the fly causing my tv to go blank for a second and go from 1080p to 720p and then back to 1080p again all within about 1 second, I’ve never seen this happen before with any games at all. It’s kinda annoying.
Wow, that looks good. For a portable version, happy days! We knew shadows would be reduced, as there is so many, and yeah, they did an awesome job. Can't wait to play it.

This port is amazing. Already invested 4 hours into it since yesterday. I personally like the unlocked frame rate, it feels like it runs faster than PS4 and Xbox One at times. UPDATE 9/6/2022: I finally played Dying Light 2 after patches and it was terrible so, I went back to this game. With the newest update I noticed way more shadow pop-in but, the gore tech in this game is so next level. Even on Switch the engine holds up and no details were spared with blood and guts. 50 hours in. XD
I just got my copy yesterday and I’ve put in 4 hours too haha. It’s so good, this is my 3rd buying it for a different console. I think it’s better than DL2 in certain ways. A classic in my eyes.
Been playing this again on the Series X with auto hdr and fps boost at 60fps and it’s great! Can’t wait to see the update for the ps5 and series x. Looking forward to Dying Light 2!
With 1.03 patch, it runs very good! Witcher 3 has long been my favorite "impossible port" on Switch, but I gotta say that Dying Light has taken over that position now that I'm done with the main campaign. It's so sharp compared with any other port, Witcher 3 counted in.
Thats all I needed to confirm I'm buying this. Would get it on ps4 but portability aspect wins it. I'm utterly astonished how close to the ps4 version it actually is. Fantastic work by the devs.
It runs close to PS4? Was I the only one seeing that Switch is no where near even PS4 which is 2013 console? As always, all these Switch ports are so blurry and is the worst machine to play yet the most expensive out of all. So, despite owning a Switch, I would never play these titles on Switch just for portability and would just sit by the couch and play it on PS5 with 4K TV.

This is a great conversion from techland they should be proud of what they have been able to achieve despite the limited specs hardware, one thing that is over looked is that managed to get the game down to 15gb from 31gb which for me is a big reason to choose the switch version over install on a steam deck for example
Love these switch port videos. When making these, I'm curious if it gets tiring having to constantly say "it's not the best looking version, but...." and "but the smaller screen hides the blah blah"
Considering that the game was originally meant to also release on PS3/360 and how optimized the PC version is, it isn't super shocking that Dying Light on Switch is good. Although, when compared to DOOM and TW3, it really is remarkable how close the DL Switch port gets to PS4/Xbone.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers hearing about the cancellation of those ports. I would love to see a build of those games running on those platforms just to see how poorly it performed for them to cancel those ports.
Wasn't it only X360 port planned to release? I remember only X360 version teasers. As i remember, PS3 version wasn't possible because of dedicated ram/vram of the Sony's console. It was the same reason why there was no Witcher 2 port on the PS3.

With the steam deck being around the corner im pretty sure that a large portion of the player base that is interested in portable aaa gaming will migrate from the switch to the steam deck, which will cause the Userbase that would buy these games on switch to decrease.

I only played about 4 hours of it on the PC, but on the Switch, I'm hooked.. in portable AND docked mode. Had I not seen the side-by-side examples in this video, I wouldn't have even noticed the visual differences. It's THAT good on the Switch.

@@oror3751 well to be fair those ports were canceled for a reason. I would have liked to have seen what it looked like on those platforms but if it meant avoiding another Black ops 3 on last gen consoles I think I can live without them
@@oror3751 it loads fater than a ps4 wdm?
@@oror3751 it barely runs stable on the old base ps4 lol
I play on other platforms and I play the majority of games on Switch..
Switching between 60fps and 30fps isn't that jarring to me, personally
Loving these native ports, I'm always on supporting portable gaming
That still looks brilliant! Techland have done a great job with this port.
I cant believe how good this looks
One of the most fun games of recent years. Thrilled to have an on-the-go version available.
I have never played dying light. Is this game about running scared of zombies or facing them head on with large variety of weapons. I just don't like games that makes me run for my life. That's the reason I didn't play re2 remake as that thing chases u all over the place. Is dying light a survival game or it let's player slaughter zombies?
@@silentassasin4202 It’s both. In the beginning you’re pretty weak and helpless and you have to avoid Zombies as best as possible (even that is a lot of fun though due to the very fluid movement and parkour system) but as the game goes on and you acquire new skills, equipment and abilities you become an absolute Zombie killing machine. The sense of progression is incredibly satisfying, early game and late game are completely different experiences.
Please make dying light on mobile!! Mobiles are more powerful than the switch it could easily run on and 2021-2 flagship phone!
Mobile phone have No game 🗿
Love these Switch port videos! I know the schedule has been packed and its a lot of work. Ni No Kuni 2 and NEO The World Ends with You would be other great 2021 releases on Switch to analyze!
This is running on Switch 😲.
Wow.
Still pretty amazing what this 5 year old handheld with an even older chipset is capable of.
At first I thought this was gonna be a Dying Light 1 next gen port, got a little too excited😫 Hoping they drop that before end of the year
already exists, just play on pc
would have changed the motion blur options before you started your review? the default was switched to on for me? so i switched it off and still haven't noticed much frame rate drop. this game might be the second best ported game after alien isolation.
Amazing game, still one of my favs. I'd recommend playing it on PC but if your only option is switch then it looks like a promising port.
I was hoping you would cover this! Imm excited to have this portable. Thank you!
Now imagine if Nintendo added just 2 extra gigs of ram and a slightly strong CPU and GPU
This is a great conversion from techland they should be proud of what they have been able to achieve despite the limited specs hardware, one thing that is over looked is that managed to get the game down to 15gb from 31gb which for me is a big reason to choose the switch version over install on a steam deck for example
This is SUCH a great game - can't wait to play through it for the fourth time once the Series X/S patch drops.
This little console never ceases to amaze me.
Much respect to these devs too, who've been meticulously laboring to make the best use of every last drop of power this console has, giving us these incredible ports we never - initially - imagine would have turned out this well, much less even possible.
The blurred shadows look better and more realistic. Tree leaf shadows look low res in real life, not razor sharp.
