ROTARY SERIES #1: FLAT TIRE! Replace a Rotary Machine's Friction Rubber Pulley & Start Sewing Again!
Вставка

- Rotary sewing machines made by the White Sewing machine company along with many other brands such as:
Kenmore Rotary, Franklin Rotary, Dressmaster Rotary, and White Rotary. These machines were primary competitors to Singer and used a Friction Pulley Drive for transferring power from the motor to the sewing machine. Many of these can dry rot over the years or more commonly develop "bald spots" due to pressure on the rubber surface over long periods of non-use.
The good news is that reproduction replacements are readily available online for very little. Replacement involves a simple procedure of removing the old pulley and replacing with one of 2 sizes depending on which your machine has. You may need an Allen wrench or hex key in small size in order to attach.
Just found an Old Kenmore Rotary myself at the thrift and these videos are so helpful in fixing it up and bringing it back to life!
Thank you for these videos. I recently changed the friction dry pully. It took FOREVER to get it off, even though I used WD40. It was a STRUGGLE ! AFTER it was off, I RE-listened to your video. You mentioned waiting overnight before pulling it off. Since I'm a senior citizen, I probably won't need to replace it again. But for other ladies watching your videos, please EMPHASIZE that the WD 40 needs to sit OVERNIGHT...( AND that it may be much harder
for a lady to pull it off than for a man to). I had to use all manner of tools to pry it off, including PRAYER. I'm glad you showed
more than one way to screw in the little screw ( I used an eyeglass repair kit screwdriver). Keep posting these videos. They help .
Thank you for sharing these ideas Andrea. Yes, it can really make a difference if Penetrants such as WD40 or other brands are allowed to sit overnight. Actually, I may have mentioned this in a video I did several years ago when I had to soak a Singer 185J for over 2 weeks (maybe 3?) to get it to loosen up, but its a great idea to repeat this approach so thank you and its exciting to hear that you managed to get yours replaced!!
I just inherited one of these from my mom. It definitely has a flat tire, needs all cords replaced and a very indepth cleaning. I look forward to seeing more information from your videos, you are very knowledgeable.
Thank you Valerie. The great news is that you can get new reproductions of both the friction drive "tire" pulley as well as the power cords for these. Stay tuned for additional new videos on my White version of your machine. They share many components and features.
@@VintageSewingMachineGarage thanks please show the movement of the lower assembly
Am enjoying this series on the White Rotary machines. Your in depth discussion on each subject is much appreciated.
Glad you like them!
thanks for the info. I had a Kenmore 117-552 with this issue. My father smoothed out that rubber piece to make it work. Now it works so nicely. I appreciate your videos they've helped quite a bit.
Hi Katharine. So nice to hear that you did not give up on the Kenmore you have.
Me too! I truly enjoy the more "mature" machines. Thanks again! @@VintageSewingMachineGarage
I just purchased a beautiful New Home Light Running rotary machine, and I had no idea what I was doing with it compared to my modern machine. Thank you for this series soooo much. This is all valuable information to me.
Glad I could help!
I just got one and it’s rubber roller was DESTROYED not only was it indented but became brittle! I’ve been slowly bringing the machine back from the dead and have been finding these videos useful! Keep it up!
Don't let that rubber roller failure dissuade you Liam. That is fairly common and the make new replacements for those so your machine can certainly live on!!
So glad I found these videos!!! I'm having fun bringing an old White Rotary Machine back to life!
Glad you like them!
My daughter found one at the trash dump last year. All it needed was a new controller and friction drive pulley.
Thank you for the video. I have Great Aunt Ethel's machine and it has a flat tire. Now I know what to do.
I have a 1938 Kenmore 117.600 and I love it! I look forward to watching this series of videos.
I have one but lost some parts ,Your is good for sewing layers of fabric?
I just begged for and was given a Dressmaster Rotary. I have had a Kenmore Rotary for years, so there's nothing new about it, really, but I was given it with the understanding that it needs refurbishing. There's a possibility that the spring pushes the motor to the handwheel might be bad. I've watched this series, but not guidance on how to deal with that problem. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks so much for posting this! I just found a White 77 that needs a new motor pulley. I would love to get her sewing again - this gives me hope! Thanks so much.
I have a white rotary with black enamel and gold paint decorating it. It has the motor and a light in the rear. When I took it out of its case to restore the case, I was wondering what had happened to the belt. 😳 Now I know there wasn’t one to be found on purpose. I can’t wait to clean, oil it and get it running. Thanks for these videos.
Thanks! Great series, thank you very much. Looking forward to the motor portion of the series.
my motor does not have enough tension. Does anyone know where the new tension springs are available
Thank you for doing this! I inherited my mom's White 77, and, though it's the machine I learned to sew on, I couldn't remember everything about threading, so some of your other videos helped. I need to find the one about cleaning and maintenance next, as the machine sat unused for at least 15 years :-(
I purchased a package of 2. They are different thickness of rubber. Does it matter which one.
I recently picked up a Free-Westinghouse machine from the 30’s that has a friction system like this. The machine is all original with copper hardware on the table and the original bulb! The old screws really like to seize up and become extremley tight. Anyways thanks for the info in this video!
Big Hoss I was just going to post the same thing. Mine was my grandmothers’ machine, a Free-Westinghouse Stratford. The replacement from sewing parts online had a slightly smaller inside diameter, so I had to sand it with a dremel. Such a beautiful old machine.
Im so glad you did this video..i just bought a 1917 Singer 66 Red eye with a Steampunk motor...Ot doesnt take a belt like the one you have but the motor looks different...She is beautiful in surprisingly great shape for $50.00. She came in an 1890 something bentwood case and had 13 different back clamping feet or attachments all original..Sadly shes missing her bobbin slide plate..Im so sad about that but then again for $50 bucks who can complain, right? Im desperately looking for an original one ... So she runs great.... BUT is only steady going when I apply light pressure to keep the roller wheel against rhe hand crank wheel...
This video helped me so much! The pulley part was completely missing from my White machine after years stored away.
I was able to order another one.
I have another question:
My Brother select-o-matic ZigZag machine came to me with a huge bent 1 and 9/16th inch needle in. I replaced it with a regular 1.5 in universal needle but it doesn’t reach the bobbin hook. Do I need to buy long, heavy-duty needs only? Are there long universal needles? Or do I need to adjust something?
I appreciate researchers like this. God bless your endeavors. I've a rotary sewing machine I got in a flea market in Calgary Canada. I need its manual to thread it and set it up working for domestic use. Thanks in advance for a rapid response. God bless.

Can't wait to see more videos.
My mother gave me her White MG77, which
has a rubber friction piece that is somewhat conical in shape. There is a bit of a flat spot on it (haven’t used it since about 1988 & I didn’t know about moving the motor off of it) & I’m wondering what to do about that. Thanks for the information here!
Another question - I have knee pedal on this machine. Where can i find foot peddle for it since the 3 Pins on this machine is not Round. In Market most 3 pin foot pedal are round ones and this machine needs flat ones like our Electric Plugs. BTW, I made the machine work from ur videos. So thank you very much for detailed video series.
This Ebay seller has them. Decent pricing even with shipping. They may have a generic electronic foot pedal that you can purchase with the cord also. Or they "might" sell you the cord and pedal already wired together for a fee. Contact them. Here is the link to the cord.

Love this series! I just purchased a White Rotary Electric and the manual says Book Number 75 so is that the mode? Can you please tell me where you sourced your parts? Thank you so much for the excellent videos! You sold me on this machine. Blessings.
Hi Susan. Not that is not the model number. There were model "Series" that contained model variations. I believe this is the 117.552 model but these machines did not change very often. As for parts, one great place I have used is an online shop that has more rotary parts than most. You can also find Ebay sellers that offer some. Here is the link to the place I go to first. sewingmachine221sale.bizland.com/store/page44.html
Do you have a video on how to replace the Stitch Length Plate and the lever. I tried to take it off and there was a very thin yet very strong metal rod (within the lever itself) that popped, but did not break off. My machine does sew, however it is not letting me change the length of the stitch. It's sewing in a micro stitch fashion regardless of what number I place the knob. Since that metal rod sort of popped, it still sews the same and does go in reverse. What is your suggestion? Try to fix myself or take to get it repaired?
I just got a 552 and the bobbin assembly juts out as you crank the wheel, is this normal? I've never seen that before in a machine
I have two White machines that have a bevel pully and I can't find a new pulley for them. One is a 1926 bronze anniversary edition. I tried the small pulley replacement and the rubber wont reach the wheel (the motor does not adjust as yours does) supplier has the same machine and states the large pulley wont work with the machine either. I have used a section of rubber hose to retrofit and it works so so. Did they actually replace the entire unit back in the day or just the rubber? Seems like they were very frugal back then maybe there are rubber parts still around?
Great question! I've never had one of these as old as yours, but there should be some solution given how large the White brand once was. Try joining a White or Rotary sewing machine group on Facebook or another social media site. There are lots of devoted fans of many brands that have groups/clubs online where they share info.
Recently bought a Rotary Reversew model R40. When thinking about replacing the friction pulley, noticed that the screw holding the pulley onto the shaft is rusted tight. Any suggestions as to how to remove a rusted screw or how to get the old pulley off the shaft?
Hi Mildred. One option for loosening it is to try one of the penetrant lubricants used for loosening old rusted and stuck bolts etc. WD-40 and others such as the 3 in 1 Penetrant I recently used on the stuck Kenmore I have might work. I would let them sit for a few days and see if the screw loosens any. Try not to over force it since stripping it will only make things worse. Also, be extra aware of how well sized your screwdriver is to the head of the screw. FYI, I use such products outdoors to avoid the smell inside my house.
@@VintageSewingMachineGarage Thanks, I have some WD-40 Rust Penetrant. Will keep applying and give it more time to work. Thanks as well for the screwdriver and ventilation tips.
Hi! I have a questions i just got one of these yesterday! I believe mine is an older model. I am not sure how to turn it on only the light turns on i was hoping you could help me!
Hi, thanks for the video. I have a Dressmaster Rotary and I'd like to find out what year it was made. Where can I find the model number? I checked on the motor and the model number isn't mentioned. The only thing I can see is a metal plate below the flywheel that has the number "127-51041" on it.
Hi, Thanks for your great videos. I have an electric White #8 with 1848186 stamped into the machined plate on the back of the base. It is electric, in a cabinet and is a shuttle rather than rotary style. It is glossy black with gold decals, rather than matt finish. It has the friction drive like the one in your video, but the friction wheel is elongated, past the rubber "tire" and the end is a belt pulley. The belt goes from there to a pulley on the bobbin winder. When you engage the winder, a rod pushes the motor back, away from the hand wheel so that the rest of the machine is disengaged while the bobbin is wound. This system is used instead of having a clutch on the hand wheel. So, my question is, where can I find a replacement friction wheel/pulley for my machine. Any help you can give is greatly appreciated :-)
I also have owned a White #8 with a shuttle since I was 11 years old in 1953 - Dad bought it new for me to help mend everyone's clothes as my mother was not very adept at sewing - am almost 80 now. I have always loved my sewing machine and taken good care of it. The rubber on my motor pulley looks much thinner than ones for sale on the web so it may be worn down; I have compensated for this by winding black friction tape around the rubber pulley. I can't find a matching motor pulley - mine has a hole - 5/8" and overall diameter about 1". (Looked on site that he recommended also.)The spring on the motor has perhaps stretched as well, I guess, has become loose. I didn't know this spring existed until I watched this wonderful lesson. The machine will only work if I tie a shoe lace around the motor and pull it closer to the main body which then engages the wheel to turn. The machine that this instructor shows - has the same motor number as my machine -E6354 but his motor pulley doesn't have the extension that supports the belt that winds thread on the bobbin. My motor pulley does not have a flat tire - maybe my machine just needs another spring that would hold the motor closer to the motor pulley. So I, too, wonder if such springs are still available. Can you demonstrate how to replace this spring? Learned so much watching your video!! I loved it!
I also need this type of pulley!!
Can you show how to re assemble and order the clutch release? Mine has a small piece of leather inside that goes in two slots and its very confusing because now my needle will not move.
I was given a Vintage Kenmore Sewing Machine, Model 11783 .. I would like to try torestore it.
Where do I find parts?
Try this site sewingmachine221sale.bizland.com/store/page44.html
I have a Domestic. I need to replace the motor. The wires are frayed and exposed. Cann you get replacement motors?
You can search online for used motors from parted out machines. Or you can take the motor you have to a shop that can rewire it for you. For this style of motor, there are no new production versions, but this machine/motor style was made for many years so the motors are not rare.
I have a flat!!! Where can I get a small size replacement??!!
What size Allen wrench are you using? I have a "flat tire" on my White Rotary, and I'm having trouble finding the right size wrench with which to attach the new one.
Hey, any other recommendations on how to unscrew the pulley? I put oil and still wont give
I'm sure this is a stupid question but I'm getting into leather working and my mom is passing down a White Model 43...was wondering if it strong enough to sew leather 🤔 biggest projects would be a wallet
These machines are really strong actually. Much stronger than most modern machines, so you should be ok. You'll just want to get a needle meant for leather (it helps) and help get the wheel started. Once the wheel has an opportunity to get spinning it will plow through leather pretty nicely..
I have the 43 also, can you help me find the manual for it. I can figure out the threading and bobbin threading.
@@belindaleighfrazier8165 if you need help, the manual is available online - there are scanned copies on Etsy
I have just been given a Carson Rotary (White Sewing Machine} Dressmaster. Where can I find an owner's manual?
You might not find the manual under the name "Carson Rotary", but if it was made by the White company, it should have very similar mechanicles/drivet rain other White-made models of that same era/design including White, Kenmore, Dressmaster, Franklin etc. For White and Kenmore, those manuals are found in many places on the web as PDFs which you can purchase for very little. First, look at the overall design and form of your Carson model and see which of the more mainstream brands such as White and Kenmore look closest and start your search there.
I have this sewing machine and the electrical cord was taken off and no I need help how the electrical cord connects😢
Hi! thank you so much for uploading the great vidoes. I recently purchased a Kenmore 117.552. I have already replaced the rubber pulley :) with your help. My machine does not have the "Stop Screw" Do i need to replace the entire plate (Rotary , forward, revers) or can I just replace the screw? and where can I purchase that part?
Check with this seller (sewingmachine221sale.bizland.com/store/page44.html) as they may have what you need or can steer you to a seller who does. These machines were made in VERY large numbers over many decades so there should be parts out there. Also, try bonanza.com
Can you replaced a motor like this with a new motor that is "BELTED?" And if so, what type of wheel could you use? A singer 66 wheel?
My sister gave me a Domestic machine 153 it has a flat tire where can I get replacement parts for it and how do I know what size do I need
Where can I get a new friction pulley for a Kenmore 117-552?
I need help to connect electrical cord. It was taken off to change cord and now we don’t know how it goes? It’s this vintage rotors sewing machine
These use the same cord/plug that White Rotarys and Kenmore Rotarys had for decades. There are 3 prongs mounted underneath the motor and the cord/plug should attach to these fairly easily. FYI, there are new reproduction cords for these if yours is worn out.
I am trying to replace the pulley on my White Rotary model 43. I have removed the set screw, but the pulley will not come off. Any suggestions?
Try using a little heat (careful use of hair dryer should suffice). You can also try a little rubbing alcohol around the shaft to dissolve the old oil. That should work.
I, too, am having difficulty getting it off. I've used penetrating oil and heat. Maybe time and repetition will help.
If you get an answer, I'd love to hear it. My White Sewing Machine is a series 77. I got the screw off, but no matter what I did, it won't come off. My machine is NOT a Dressmaster. It's frustrating.
I'm an old lady, and I just FINALLY got mine off. FIRST , I prayed. I prayed very hard, because I tried getting mine off before without success. Then I carefully covered the motor with plastic and sprayed the metal part of the pully
. Keep pap towling handy for drips. Then let it sit OVERNIGHT.
( I DIDN'T do that, so I struggled)
First using a channel lock (sort of long pliers) then I used a sturdy flat head screw driver, to sort of pry it off. ( Still with me?) Then I hit the handle of that screwdriver, with a hammer I got at Walmart. It looks like a normal, sturdy hammer, but it's short. I WHACKED THE HECK OUT OF IT.
Then I was making profress.I was about half way there. Then I owed a STANLEY 17" Ripping
( UPPS...SENT TOO SOON!)
STANLEY. 17" Ripping Chisel. I wedged it between motor and the thing im fighting to get off, and PULLED. PULLED AGAIN. I DID THIS SEVERAL TIMES. IT came off !😅 But, according to the VIDEO, i should have let the WD 40 sit over night. Remember to pray. A LOT !
The pulley that drives the machine and the one on the front of the machine to wind the bobin needs to be replaced on mine, as well as the cord.....Any information on where to get parts at??? VERRY similar to your machine but the brand name is DOMESTIC..Any info would be appreciated..
I have a white rotary machine no 659 / 11256 ITS written over world wide I am puzzled interfacing the needle plz help

I have the same model and My handwheel is not perfect smooth. I see tiny bumps in it. Can I still Use it? Cannot attach Pic in comment section.
Is it the steel hand wheel itself that has these 'bumps'? Or is it the rubber friction pulley wheel that is not smooth? THAT part can be replace and they are sold online for reasonable prices.
@@VintageSewingMachineGarage it is steel hand wheel just like u have in your machine
Would you say this machine is similar to the Montgomery ward model 30? I have my grandmothers and want to start using it but has sat for at least 20 years.... I’d love to use this series to help it get fully working again!!
Hello. Your machine was made by the National Sewing Machine Co. The model 30 (AKA "The Streamliner") was in production for more than 15 years and I believe it is a vibrating shuttle type and it works with long bobbins which was a bobbin system used by many makers including Singer but was eclipsed by the Class 15 and Class 66 styles which eventually became more popular. So, yours is not the same as those Rotary models made by the White company. White had a contract with Sears and so it makes sense that National would have supplied Montgomery Ward given it was a main competitor to Sears. I have not overhauled one like yours since they are less common. National also made machines for other private labels such as Macy's. As you look for more info. on yours, I would also look for info. on National brand sewing machines as they would have had very similar models but perhaps with changes in color and trim. Machines like yours were very strong machines and you are especially fortunate that it was in your family so you have a genuine heirloom!!
Also, I would find and join sewing machine groups in Yahoo or Google and search under National Sewing Machine. If you only search under Montgomery Ward, you will find machines unrelated to yours since MW would contract out with multiple makers over the years just like Sears did.

Hello Wanda. The spring/motor mounts onto the body of the machine with screws. You can get replacement (vintage) either spring or whole spring with motor at places such as Ebay or Bonanza. I would try those first. Theses machines were made in large numbers for many years so, similar to Singer, vintage parts are fairly common compared with some European brands.

Hi,. I have the same model vintage machine. Motor feels warm and on the hotter side after a few minutes if use. Is this normal?
Is there any reason TO or NOT TO use the larger one on a machine with the smaller pulley?
Yes indeed! A larger wheel will increase the speed that the machine sews a great deal and will reduce the amount of power it has to get through heavy materials. I have not used a machine with a larger wheel on it but I would assume that either the internal gearing on the machine is higher or that the large fly wheel on the back is larger as well. (probably the later).
@@retrohipster994 okay, it'll be more of a 1:1 even ratio, I see now. Thanks for the reply! Idk why I missed that hahaha

Hi Karyn. I would not doubt that Eatons would have carried a version of this machine. I know that later Eaton machines were made by Brother. But for your model, I don't know for sure. White Sewing Co. would be the most likely candidate but then Westinghouse and New Home had brands with Rotary friction drive pulleys as well.
You can find lots of "Frankenstein" mashups of parts on post-war sewing machines.
That makes a lot of sense given the supply chain issues that existed during and after the war.
Where can I get the power cord for this machine? I have the same one.
where can I buy a new tire for mine please
Hi Belinda. They make new reproductions for these friction pulley tires. There are two sizes that I know of so be sure to check which one matches the one you have. There should be several online sources, but this site does have a good selection of Rotary parts both vintage and new. Here is a link to the page of that site that I am getting mine from when I have one of these models to overhaul. If you scroll down on this page, you should find items #8 and #9 are the two versions they sell. If you have questions, the owner should respond. sewingmachine221sale.bizland.com/store/page44.html

How do I insert the rubber part of the drive ?
The rubber part of this pulley wheel comes installed on the steel wheel that attached to the driveshaft.
Vintage Sewing Machine Garage I would have to buy the rubber pulley with the shaft together or just buy the rubber pulley alone ?
No, you just purchase the pulley. I show in the video how to remove the old worn pulley and replace with the new one. The shaft of the motor does not get removed. The pulley installs off and on the shaft.
I was sewing away today and CLUNK! The bobbin case fell apart in two pieces- or 3 if you count the bobbin itself. Oh good grief. Off to the mechanic in Westminster, CO.
Sorry to hear this though the good news is that if your bobbin case is not repairable (and it might be), a vintage replacement can be found online for very little. These machines were made in VERY large numbers over many decades so at least it is not a rare part if you need a replacement. Here is a link to a site I've used in the past that sells a number of replacement parts. sewingmachine221sale.bizland.com/store/page44.html
The new replacement drive wheels are not rubber. They are vinyl.
If anyone is looking to buy one, I have one for sell.
I am interested to buy. Send details
Some Elna machines also use friction pulleys, but those are tapered, which makes a replacement part a little more difficult to find and much more expensive.
I personally never tried that, but some people have reported good results after sanding the worn pulley with a small flat file while the motor is turning.
Yes, I have seen people try to whittle down the rubber wheels to remove the flat spot. But it would depend on whether the base rubber was still stable enough to do this (if its dry rotted, I would replace it). The other challenge can be getting it even when you are shaving it down. Any variation in its round shape could cause vibration and/or issues in performance.
I used a small throw away finger nail file and it worked ok to get the flat tire spot removed from the rubber pulley on a white, domestic, and an elna. You slowly run the motor as you grind down the flat tire spot. For as little as the average person would use these old machines it was a much cheaper fix. Remember when not in use place a piece of fabric between the machine and the motor to hold the rubber pulley away from the hand wheel thus avoiding another flat tire.
This video helped me so much! The pulley part was completely missing from my White machine after years stored away.
I was able to order another one.
