Idk why people continuously try to apply this to real life. I mean people who play shooting games, aren't shooting real people. Keep in mind these are grown women, with a job, a relationship. I don't think writing about these things is suddenly going to change them into masochists who want to be abused.
I hate this mentality. I understand that such content aimed at young folks CAN be harmful. But pls, its fiction.

    1. As a librarian in the real world who’s never been on TikTok I am so confused by this behaviour hahaha. 2. There is such a double standard when it comes to women sexualising young men in that it’s not seen as much of a problem in comparison to older men sexualising young women. It reminds me of how there was sympathy for Millie Bobby Brown for being inappropriately sexualised while she was younger than 18 but her costar Finn Wolfhard was harassed and bullied for calling out women in their 30s who were sexualising him and refusing to take photos with women who made him uncomfortable when he was under 18. I always find it so shocking that some women behave in this way. I’m a 25 y/o cis woman and the first time I was ever catcalled I was 14 and walking home in my SCHOOL UNIFORM, I was so scared I ran all the way home after that. I would never want to make anyone feel objectified or scared, least of all a minor. The thought of young people growing up thinking this sort of behaviour is normal is so scary to me.

It's too late for that, genZ has already been warped by the sexualization pushed by older generations. They think things are normal and that's how it always was, but it's reached insane levels of degeneracy, self hatred, addiction, and destructive behavior. Porn addiction is rampant and has serious physical and mental sides effects and kids find this stuff at really young ages. Then comes the part where they become bored or numb to regular porn and get into more disgusting, violent and exploitative stuff. It can ruin a person chances of a healthy relationship before they even start dating...it's really sad hearing their personal experiences, and it's pretty much ignored. Too much money to be made so the industry will quash the truth for as long as they can.

@@whispersinthedark88 as a zoomer (born in '03), sexuality in a lot of cases has become a lil extreme.
As you say, pr0n addiction is absolutely rampant and has destroyed a lot of peoples' sex drive or warped it to the point where guys will have a hard time getting it up and then fall into a performance anxiety death-spiral and just be completely broken about it for months or even years and that need for dopamine drives them back to the easy, artificial fix of pr0n. I can't speak for the effect on that for the recipient (Girl, boy, other etc.) since I don't have the personal perspective of that specifically happening to me (context; I'm a born dude who's heteroflexible).
Along side that, dating culture is broken and social media is largely to blame. You have people espousing extreme beliefs as if they are the norm, you have the pressure and anxiety of appeasing new forms of pickiness (icks and other weird, specific or sometimes just flat-out stupid provisos that are often just petty) and not to mention dating apps turning meeting someone new into an assembly line.
Not to mention there's WAY too many instances of the extreme being seen as the norm as I mentioned before. From my own experience it would have to be the "gymtok" crowd of predominantly women who pull gotchas on men for glancing their way. As someone with an issue focusing, causing my eyes to wander around wherever I am, I often find my eyes glued to some focal point like the floor or the ceiling or myself in one of the many mirrors and it's caused me to look in the opposite direction of any girl nearby just out of an, admittedly, irrational fear.
Gen Z broken, we're all scared, picky and h0rny.

@@discipleofdagon8195 Yeah my son lifts weights is about your age and has told me how that shit will happen, as well as seeing some of the ridiculous videos they post...it really is crazy.
The dating issues are one that I find myself facing now, it's like no one meets in person anymore, its totally alien to me. Online dating is a terrible mess, and meeting ppl who are looking for long-term healthy relationships and have common intrests are hard to find, so I just started making friends online who I share values with and are good ppl...but they are almost all genZ. It's a little weird but they have helped me understand just how bad things have gotten, most ppl my age and older are pretty blind to what's going on unless they are having to deal with it personally. My much younger brother got sucked into the porn rabbit hole before he was 10 and is only now in his 30's dealing with trying to reverse the damage and save his relationship. I am now so very thankful that I didn't have the money to buy my son his own computer or phone until he was older. He got to play games on Xbox so he got exposed to some things online but for the most part that was just shit talking and yelling at the TV...no harm done. But that was enough to saved him from the porn part, I didn't realize that was happening back then. And most parents don't know, they are handing kids this technology as if it's a babysitter...then they wonder what went wrong. Parents need to actually parent, but that can be hard when both parents work all the time. We have a great many things to deal with so that young ppl aren't being fed into this meat grinder, and it's only going to get worse if we don't deal with it asap.

THIS! Having read and seen some questionable shit on Wattpad back when I was younger (some of the questionable stuff being perfectly normal stuff for adults but _not_ for minors, which I was at the time), the difference between fanfics and Wattpad stories and smut/dark romance booktok was that neither the author's nor the reader's face was attached to it. Also, we didn't go around saying sexual/suggestive stuff to people.
Despite fanfics and Wattpad having some taboo stories (and despite some of those stories fucking me up), the one good thing about those spaces was that boundaries still existed. And most people didn't want anyone irl to know that read those kinds of books. And I kinda want that back. Not the shame or the mocking but the "keep the stuff you read about to yourself/ to your niche only" if you read stuff that might be unhealthy if it bled into real life.

the problem with booktok is that the books they read and find entertaining are shallower than a flat dish. I've read fanfics about shrek written by a 14 year old with more depth and better smut than the things they read. (obviously this isn't the entirety of booktok but it is the most prevalent)
Not to mention the fact that they have crippling porn addictions (in the form of books) and use media to fuel it and sexualise and harass actual people. it's a very real problem and these women who harass men online are hardly different than men who harass women online.

I know what this stuff looks like from the outside. I am painfully self-aware of this shit.
But when you interact within the community, its like this little safe space where its okay to flirt around and do strange character acting.
That being said I'm also primarily on ghosttok (the band) and that must be the kindest community I've ever been in so- Don't take me word about the "safe space", I might be wrong about other parts of masktok, unsure.

i've always loved reading but i genuinely hate booktok. a lot of people assume i'm trying to "gatekeep reading" when i say this (as if that was a thing??) but i genuinely love seeing others discover the joy of reading a good book. the problem starts when i see literal 12 year old girls on booktok drooling over grown ass men and internalizing all the toxic stuff these books promote. when an adult reads the books, they hopefully do that with critical sense, and they understand these situations are not okay. when a child does, they just subconsciously absorb those things as normal.
this problem did not start with booktok tho: i grew up on wattpad and ao3 and i've seen some genuinely fucked up stuff on there way earlier than i should've. the real question is why are we, adults and older teens who have had bad experiences in the past related to this type of content, incouraging younger generations to have the same experience rather than protecting them??

The problem with one part of booktok is they literally are grown women who dont care about the safety of minors. I've seen a biker have to address people harassing his gf because booktok was going after her. A lot of the biketok community are 18-20 year olds and I'm in booktok and im over 21 and it makes me almost uncomfortable watching grown women comment the insane things at a child who literally just became an adult. There was one booktok creator I had to unfollow as she takes clips of people doing cute things on tiktok (random people) and then creates a whole "booktok" book around it and it is always hyper specific that it started to make me feel itchy and weirded out.

It gets worse when people that are too young to understand the important difference between kink/fantasy and actual real life intimacy/romance yet get sucked into this. Most of the booktok girls are grown women who thing that raping is cute(for example haunting Adeline. Like what the fuck? That’s not a dark romance. That’s just some shitty story that was made to satisfy people’s fantasy who obviously never heard of wattpad at the age of 12), stalking is, apparently, also cute and they don’t realise how awful everything is. They don’t realise how disrespectful they’re to the victims of assault, stalking and etc. I got stalked and nuh uh, it’s wasn’t a hot guy. I’m so tired of booktok.

I am so happy to see that women are feeling more confident in expressing their sexuality and their desires, but seeing some of these extremely dark things is kind of scary. To think that real life guys are seeing all this, and might MISUNDERSTAND it very badly is just so much more scary. However it did not make me want to be stalked or anything because I know the difference about a woman writing for the fantasies of other women and what is an IRL abusive relationship (or the struggle it is being a woman in a world full of predators).
BUT, do I dream to be snatched away by Rhysand? Affirmative 😂 Joke aside, the smut isn’t what makes ACOTAR special. It’s the whole story and universe. _Listen._ I’ll be the first admit that I love dipping my toe in some dom biker/toxic bad boy stories on occasion, and sometimes even some tasteful CNC roleplay/stories. I eat that ish up, *when it’s fictional.*
But the idea of real, nonfictional dudes taking advantage of those fantasies and trying to make them _real_ is where I call it. The whole appeal about dabbling in those ‘darker’ sides of fiction is that *you still have full control over the experience.* I can choose what type of story I want to experience, and if it ever gets a bit too intense I can just as easily stop reading/listening and never have to think about it again.
The act of real life men trying to make those experiences real takes away a lot of that sense of control.

It's a delicate line because, for the most part, the majority of people don't actually want that irl, they just want the fantasy of it, but then there's a handful of people who take it a step too far and we all pay the price for it.
We're going back to that era where people made fun of girls who liked Twilight because 1. It's a "girly" thing; 2. That one group of fanatics who make everyone look equally unhinged.

They have themes of murder, r*pe, SA, etc. At this point there's no romance it's just dark. These books are only hyped up for their smut. If you think about it is doing exactly what the porn industry is doing just in written form;profiting off of the violence and pain of women

I am both a writer and occasionally go on booktok. The erotica genre taking over is both hilarious and annoying. Hilarious because of rule 34 definitely applying here and annoying because it doesn’t have to be the first thing to come to mind when discussing literature. Either way, when it comes to a community that focuses on escapism, it’s really easy to blur the lines. Just because I like a saucy scene in a book doesn’t mean I need a dude in a helmet on a vroom vroom to suddenly show up and take me. It’s not that deep but booktok is such a crazy rabbit hole to be reminded of.

And I feel like hyper focusing on this will lead to real life consequences and implications that a lot of people on there haven't considered. Funnily enough, I'm a lesbian but men in masks are still "attractive" to me in theory. It's hard to describe, but I like to look at them or read about masked men in fanfics (like Ghost from COD), but I don't want to touch them or them to touch me. Or speak to me, honestly.
But this is terrifying. And like, you look over at queer booktok and they're fine, somehow straight tiktok turned into this. What's even worse is that adults are dragging minors into this, cause of course. Also, would smash Glamrock Freddy.

More than likely, it's because the women realize they are probably going to end up in abusive relationships, so the ones that can write try to justify and romanticize it in writing, and the ones who can't read the books to justify and romanticize it.

As someone who has effectively barricaded myself from society and is genuinely needy and loves anything that feels like male attention and validation beyond what is chill and okay, I will give a rare bout of grace to my own actions. They're excusable. Embarrassing, mortifying, humiliating, career ruining? Yes. Excusable? Also yes, something that is not often said for myself. I have been one of those women in the comments. I'm afraid that the actions I currently take (liking gojo thirst edits on main, constantly) are just as embarrassing. I am a deeply unwell individual. Genuinely. But when I take a step back and look at this shit, it's beyond weird. I have always been a person into extremely fucked up romantic tropes. And that's not normal, and we shouldn't be romanticizing it. Books like haunting adeline should NOT be on everyone's tbr! Just because I wanted them on mine and I've liked things like this since long before puberty hit does not mean other young girls need this recommended to them when they aren't the type of people that would have been into them otherwise. They simply shouldn't! Books with seriously problematic and highly illegal sexual activities should in fact, not be what every teenage girl is giggling over and recommending to their friends! That's not okay! And it's taken a long time for me to recognize it myself, it really has. But I do realize it now, and it's not cool. Booktok has blown so many things out of proportion, and created a community in which things get magnified and warp into "the norm" when they shouldn't. The popularity of booktok is a genuine issue, you should have to have seriously curated your timeline to get that kind of thing, but if you like any old book review, especially if it's romantic in nature, these kinds of recs can be put on your tl because they are simply so numerous. This sort of behavior should not be so mainstream. These things are very BDSM in nature, and it's really dangerous to be promoting men saying things like they were in those videos, REAL MEN, when the people seeing those videos don't fully understand how these fantasies have a lot of requirements in terms of safety and trust and other things that are VERY important in context to these child-taking-a-short-cycle-of-sleep and dubcon/noncon scenes, especially because I don't think these men are fully aware of it themselves. It's dangerous to have a generation of women that think that a man saying he wants to child-taking-a-short-cycle-of-sleep you and then grape you is romantic and "vanilla" acts are uncool and boring- which IS an ideal that booktok does in fact perpetuate. Should there be a community for people like me? Yes. Should that community be so popular and so easily available? No. Does that mean the way I think and act and have needs should be socially taboo? Not entirely. But I do think that this is the sort of thing that you need to go looking for DELIBERATELY and with intention, and it shouldn't be something that is so popular that so many biker boys can use it for content to boost their numbers in such a drastic way. There's a lot that I'm not saying, and most of what I am saying it quite critical of booktok which is a place that I felt I belonged for a little while before it got... gentrified? But I do feel like overall a lot of these people are probably either quite young, lonely, got roped into this culture when they shouldn't have, or are are like me. I am actually probably all three in one way or another, but I do feel as though a lot of those people engaging with biker boys and masktok are innocent, in a way. They don't quite understand the implications of what they're doing, or they do, and they think they know it and it's fine, but really, it's not something they could back up in real life. I'm really fucking up what I wanted to say here and basically I don't think I got my point through at all, but I already wrote this confusing and disorienting comment, so here it is?

Lesbian here. Hard agree, I think it’s just anyone who finds the mysterious villain trope hot will think masks by extension are hot.
I also think in my case at least men are only ever ‘attractive’ to me if they’re fictional. Examples: Astarion in BG3 or Geralt from the Witcher franchise, even Henry Cavil when he is Geralt is hot but I don’t find Henry Cavil hot when not portraying the character.

Thank you for speaking about this cos the way this shit has my soul shrivelling. Enjoy what you want but the moment you involve others in sexual fantasies who are underaged or fawning over guys who are clearly trying to get attention, it's no longer about books. At all.

i love how cooper always gives a shout out to the sapphics lol, for the record the scream mask has not made it to our circle and masks are not as big of a thing in general
