Troy Donockley (born May 30th, 1964) is an English multi-instrumentalist and composer. Having performed with Nightwish since 2007, he officially joined the band in October 2013 alongside Floor Jansen.
A native of Cumbria, England, Donockley was involved with several Celtic groups like Traveling Country prior to working with Nightwish. He was also a member of English folk cover band The Bad Shepherds until their dissolution in 2016.
In 2017, he and fellow Nightwish member Tuomas Holopainen formed the progressive folk group Auri, with Holopainen's wife Johanna Kurkela as the lead vocalist. The trio's self-titled debut album released the very next year.

I always said that Floor and Marco have 2 soul-related voices thank you, this is one of my favorite songs from NW.
I love your reviews David, & I love you asking if we are ready, & I ALWAYS answer your personal lean in, & makes me laugh that I am talking to you like you are here. Nightwish is unparalleled to me, & each member does their part off the charts, completely engaged, with total commitment to it, & each other, every time! You can watch the same song at different venues, & their job on stage is almost the same performance wise. Tuomas is a master, he could be in Hollywood scoring movies, glad he isn’t. His thinking, & worldview, is what I wish everyone had, & his knowledge of science, the ancient, & language is something I have never seen in popular music. He gets me looking things up, hope I am not alone in that. Floor, is by far the best singer I have ever seen in popular music in my life, & I am old, so I have seen many. Marko, too is a great singer, & love his chunky guitar playing, & worry about the hole he leaves for Nightwish, especially regarding their power songs. Troy, the Man of MANY instruments, is too a musical genius, that is a harmonizer extraordinaire. Kai, is a top notch drummer, he would have to be, the drummer leads the parade, he isn’t of Jukka’s intensity, but the band didn’t skip a beat I could see with that change, & Empuu, pronounced as spelled, but maybe Empoo is better to assure you the pronunciation. I love his solo’s, his smile, he makes me happy somehow to see him. I think he plays a bit of a caretaker role to “his band”. This song is one of my favorites, for the power, & heavy lyrics, of the best meshed male female metal singers! My only complaint David is your new backgrounds interference with the quality of the video. I actually really like it, other than the bleed. Can’t you do something to block it there, actually would be nice if you could have the video a little larger, since I am asking. 😉 Tell your Piggy, we LOVE for you to go back, love your reactions, & explanations of the biz, & I do indeed “love the show”!
That's why 20+yrs in, this band is still as popular as ever, and thanks to these reactions, gaining new fans in droves! They just come out confident and proud, and show us how it's done. (Still alittle hesitant w Jukka on bass...but they just need time...thats forgivable!

Did you just suggest that Kai Hahto isn't as intense as Jukka?! Ok, 2 points...Jukka's *style* of drumming is intense....he works hard and his "arms up" approach is fun to watch! And I love his tucking down between his parts....its unique. But Kai is technically superior, IMO. I guess I feel that way bc I've seen all of his drum clinics, and what he can do (away from Nightwish) is simply incredible!

Anything Nightwish from Wacken, Wembley, Tampere is gold...or rather platinum:) And maybe their End of the Era concert with Tarja as well. Cannot go wrong with any of the songs there, though people will argue that one version of the specific song is better than the other:)

Yes, this is a powerful and very well staged live performance. Emppu is a black belt judoka, so his fingers are quite strong, for sure. And "the third guy" is Troy Donocley, a Brit from Cumbria. Great analysis from you. ⛄👍
You don't need to apologize for your high level of expectation. That in and of itself is such a stamp of approval that I am more than satisfied with your reaction & review. I have listened to and watched every performance by Nightwish+Floor and Floor+others that I can get my hands on and each time my level of expectation is high. That is a good thing. Is each experience as amazing as the first time I saw the video of Floor singing Ghost Love Score at Wacken 2013? No. But I haven't been disappointed by any of their performances either.
I am loving your Master Class style commentary. I was a piano major, now a piano teacher. I have sung in choirs which is my favorite place to be and have had voice training. I love how you respond to everything going on and Night Wish is awesome to comment on and learn from.

Anyway, I do not think that Marko's and Floor's voices were made for each other. And neither was Marko's and Tarja's voices made for each other. They are all just extremely talentend and experienced singers who _make_ their voices fit each other's perfectly.

Like always, when the Feels dont hit instantly, you tell us the technical and Production Gimmicks we might miss, and when the Songs really starts rolling- well thx for an Storytellers Evening:)- i catch myself always cewing the first rough 2 Minutes fast forward, bcs i dot really feel well with that- till Empuu solos the Rythm, from there....wohaa:) thx and just go on with NW:) hope the Concert will be an one in an Life Time next Year, stay healthy.🤘🤘🤘
This song is one of my favourites now but it has grown to be that...the first couple if times I heard it, it seemed pretty "standard", particularly the first half, so I get where you are coming from. Good review.
Interesting point - if asked I would actually claim this is one of the songs I _don't_ like, the melody line, the structure....
but when listening to it I won't skip, and it has a tendecy to stick in my head a lot!

I don't often comment, I'm more of a silent observer/lurker. So, Mr. Heretic, I greatly appreciate the shout out on the requests. I was a bit shocked my name was on there! So thanks for that, truly.
I know what you mean about expectations, and I understand completely your final score, and I do agree. This is one of my favorites - but, it took me a few listens/watches before it made it to my faves. After that initial listen, and you go back for more, you start to notice all the smaller things; for example, Floor going full wolf near the end. This song is so amazing. The particular energy of this song - they are having a blast on stage, and it grows on you. The energy that Nighwish creates has a way of coming through the screen (or speakers) and making you feel every word...every note. So few bands can do that.
I'm sure some are a little salty about the 8.8. I'm not, I think you gave it a great honor with that score and I agree with all you stated. I greatly appreciate your knowledge of music, theory, experience & performing, and above all, I appreciate your energy and honesty. You are one of a small (too small) group that I believe truly enjoy and appreciate this band (and others) in the ways I and many others do. Thank you for that.

hey David, I love your reactions. My suggestion is at some point react to the second part of the Human-Nature album. Its called All the works of nature which adorn the World. It's pure Tuomas genious right there, fully instrumental. ;)
Floor's and Marco's voices, complement each other perfectly.
Everything interchangeable on Emppus guitar is new at every gig, such as strings bridge, etc.

If you use the Floyd Rose Bridge you will have to stretch your finger on the guitar strings much more before anything happens unless you object simultaneously with the crank. and Troy Donockley is a man whose name you don't remember.😉
Hey DH. Whilst I understand the level of expectation - if you're able to objectively consider what the score would have been if you'd seen it earlier, then why not just give that score? 🙄
This is quite possibly my favourite NW performance, and for me a 9.3-4 all day long (for all the reasons you explained yourself), so I'll accept your caveated score and pretend I didn't hear the official one...😉
Your reaction/review was still great otherwise - it just doesn't seem to tie to the score (I've seen you give many in the region of 8.8 with far less praise). For me this is also a song that builds in intensity from the bridge to the outro so loses a bit with the pauses (not blaming you for that) - I'd hope you would enjoy it even more on a second play through.
Going by this logic, by the time he gets to the TGSOE he's going to give it a 6 lol. Great reaction nonetheless!
Thanks Home Gnome. This is one of my personal faves. It's worth a 9.4 just for Floor's warrior pose near the end. And DH doesn't really score on the meaning of the songs. It deserves points for that alone. Tuomas's lyrical poetry is on full display here. "Where will we be when they come?" Where indeed.
Feeling you Homie, that score wasn't fair AT ALL (I still can't figure it out!). I get that the expectations are high, but this performance was GOLD. At this rate TPATP (my favourite NW song) will be rated so LOW because it's going to be one of the last songs to be reacted to and everything will be taken for granted. SO disappointed... BTW I always look forward to DH reactions because he's usually on point. I like the fact that he's honest but this time... LOL, it's time for rants :-)
@@neffscape6353 Glad it's not just me! I think I'm generally open to fair critique - had no issue with I want my tears back score for example - GSOE and PATP will have enough differences I think that they'll still hit high, but not sure about other more "normal" tracks. We'll see.
Agreed, this one beats Weak Fantasy for the fun factor by a long way. I guess we're all looking for different things.

This is one of the few Nightwish songs that I actually prefer the album version. The folksy element Troy is bringing detracts from the intensity of the original for me. Some people really like the electric bouzouki, but I really don't.

I don't think it's possible to do that in "chest voice" without being unhealthy in the long term, which also makes me sure it isn't chest, because Floor is one of the most healthy vocalists out there. Not that she couldn't do it, but she just wouldn't. Floor is known for her "mix." I'm no vocal expert though... But I'm kind of a "Floor expert" >.<
Floor always adjusts her vocal color to blend with whomever she sings with, she gets that "floor-marco effect" with most people she sings with.

8.8???? NO WAY this is worse than Weak Fantasy!!!! Maybe stopping here and there ruined your experience of this song. To me is a masterpiece and the way it is executed is absolutely off records. It starts with an awesome electric bouzouki intro from Troy (actually a very OFFICIAL NW member since 2013), then the instruments are introducted one by one until Floor starts singing. In the chorus the harmonizations (two voices, not three) are out of this world, the guitar solo (from Emmpu... "HEM-POO") and THAT acute bridge... come on! You also get an awesome, non stop 3 minutes of windmilling from Floor and an astonishing breathless ending. You can't just compare this song to weak fantasy, it's just on another level (and I still think WF is a nice song!).
I like this better than Weak Fantasy too, but come on, 8.8 doesn't seem like a ruined experience to me
Specially considering David is getting more and more demanding with Nightwish as he said in the end
@@dac2007 there's really no reason to score this song less than WF. Even if you become more demanding with NW this is miles better than WF. 8.8 is not a bad score per se, and of course David is entitled to have his opinions. I want him to stay true to himself and honest, don't get me wrong. I only think he had his experience ruined by the frequent pauses... because for me it's objectively a much better song than others that were rated with higher scores.

@@dac2007 Fair enough, but while in fact tastes are always subjective (so you can say "I don't like it" and I will accept your judgement) i find difficult to accept a "scoring" method if it's not based on objective categories of observation. I think DH should at least conceive a standardized scoring method (he could easily do it). He could give a score for the composition, lyrics, arrangement, singing, performance, production, and public engagement and "personal taste" and then provide a much more balanced score, not entirely based on random impressions and order of listening. Of course nothing will be really "objective" but this is what I meant when I said that 7DTW is objectively "better" thand WF. :)

Nightwish worst song ever is roughly an 8.
This one is kind in the middle.

It is a real shame that your window where you show the video is semi-transparent. This is never a cool effect, just annoying as the viewer struggles to make out the video. The background here makes it even more challenging
The opacity filter is needed to help get by copyright, it helps throw off the algorithm so it isn't detected as easily.
