I have been watching Extra History since your episodes on Korean Admiral Yi Sun-sin. It's been wonderful to watch the gradual increase in quality for this years. Keep at it!
Superb opening episode. Polymath, polyglot, consummate statesman and cunning politician; a profound lawgiver, inspired naturalist, mathematician, poet, and composer-Frederick II was probably the most brilliant person to ever wear a crown. Between the ages of Charlemagne and Napoleon, he has no equal and he was legendary among his contemporaries as either a demigod or the Antichrist. He was arguably the last true Western Caesar.
While this might be a bit of a cheap shot, a timeframe as broad as "Charlemagne to Napoleon" gives him plenty of competition. Off the top of my head I can come up with: - Catherine and Frederick the Great - China's Kangxi Emperor (unfortunately the GOAT Taizong of T'ang was too early for this timeframe) - Some of the great Indian rulers like Rajendra Chola and Akbar the Great - possibly the greatest Abbasid Caliph Harun Al-Rashid or perhaps his son and grandson who presided over the Islamic Golden Age - Korea's Sejong the Great
Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor AKA the most competent man in Europe, so competent that he was named the Antichrist. Honestly, I'm really hyped for this. Freddy is one of those figures in European history I always have fun reading about.
@ReverendMeat51 in all fairness, it was the Christians who presented the bigger threat to him. Plus, it's not as if this would be the last time that happened with regards to European monarchs and the papacy.
@@jabrondestoroyah Stupor Mundi. He was a cosmopolitan king, in some aspexcts more modern than some folks today. His treaty on falconry basically remains a staple of how to treat the birds of prey properly and train them successfully.
Oooh, don't think I dont notice "Air and Light" playing in the background of the episode from the Gracchi brothers episodes! Beautiful melody, delighted to hear it once more!
As someone who’s been on a genealogy kick and is constantly looking up famous people of history to see if we’re related (which, you’re bound to be related to everyone on Earth in someway). Unholy Roman Emperor Fredrick II, is my 4th cousin 27 times removed.
Pope: "I excommunicate you!" Fred: "I am going on a crusade so all my sins are absolved!" Pope: "Wut?" Someone (probably): "Do you guys think this whole thing about excommunication on a whim by the Pope and absolution in exchange for XYZ might be broken?"
Sadly wasn't the case. He got excommunicated for being too late and not helping the fifth crusade. Then when he negotiated getting Jerusalem back, and while being king of Jerusalem, he got the city put under interdict. While he did great, noone in the Crusader State appreciated his efforts.
That is NOT a topic I expected to see a series about, but what a treat! Frederick II is such a fascinating man, unlike anything that came before or after in hundreds of years.
Future Episode suggestion, Please do an episode on the Lioness of Brittany Jeanne de Clisson. Because I have just learned about this amazing woman and man she is an absolute Badass. Also great video by the way SO many wild plot twists.
Seconded!! Loses her husband to French kingdom machinations, rowed herself and children to England in a row boat, petitioned the English king to let her wage bloody war against the French on the water, and then disappeared back into the mists of history. Absolute legend and badass!

Popes named Innocent don’t tend to be very innocent, do they.

Europe in the high medieval period aggressively did not have their sh*t together, apparently.
I would love it if I wasn't living through it right now.
We're not sure who has their 💩 together in general. We see a lot of people repeating past mistakes.
We should change the saying to “those who study the past are doomed to repeat it anyway”
The 12th century is High Medieval, not Late.
Late Medieval is somewhere around 1300 onward
