Mr. KG George, who is considered by Mr. Lijo Jose Pellissery as the best director in the Malayalam movie industry, passed away last week. You could consider one of his films going forward. A prominent actor last week said that Mr. KG George may have only directed 19 films, but each one really was a film. Each one of his movies were very different from the others, much like what Lijo Jose strives to do with each of his films. He is supposed to have stopped direction as star culture took root in malayalam, which is said to have affected his last film very negatively. Cheers!
Oh that's very sad.. but if he's regarded that highly it sounds like he must have been highly respected in the industry. I think we'll have to check out some of his work, I see he did the movie Irakal which I hear if meant to be good? I might try for that one next week if I can squeeze it in.
This film blew us away. So None of Lijo's earlier films worked in box offcie , though both were good. So this was his first blokcbuster film and showed what he can do with pop film tropes and give it that "magical realism" (malayalis love that word and Anton Marques) . Joy mathew was a revelation in this film as the senior priest. Sunil Sugatha (por thozhil villain) made a mark in this. Music was top notch cinematography was out of this world. All time best in malayalam.
Oh I love that Magical realism as well that was present in this movie! It brings in a small element of fantasy into a very real scenario, and LJP did that masterfully in this (that wasn't even a topic we covered in this breakdown). Again, there is just so many layers to this movie, it's incredible! Completely agree with the two actors you mentioned and the music was sooo good. This one felt like an immersive experience and that had a lot to do with the music!
Even though it's not ancient times, the movie is still a period piece. It's hard to make out what time it is set because almost all of them wear white clothes all the time, except Father Vincent. From the very few vehicles they show in it, The movie is most probably set in the 60's or 70's. (Don't really remember if there are any Easter eggs in the movie to know the exact time frame)
Right? I thought it felt like a period piece, but there was no direct mention of the timeline. It was not ancient times, like the Tippu sultan period, but I didn't think it was present day due to the lack of technology! I'll have to rewatch this sometime and keep a closer eye, the vehicles might be the right indication regarding time period for sure!
I was pleasantly surprised by this film so thank you for suggesting we watch it. A hidden gem! ❤
It was so much fun!

@@D54podyes totally go for Irakal. Easy to relate , Shakespearean feel.
@@yahee13irakal is almost like Joji
Oh my goodness... if it's like Joji I need to watch this. One of my favourite movies ever.

@@D54pod There is definitely a Chetak scooter that is drawn by the head priest's assistant, which is either from 60's or 70's
