  • This pickup is an engineering marvel. If you're interested, I would love to get into how the material properties, coil winding, coil geometries, and magnet flux patterns contribute to its unique tone. I've found that this setup creates a distinct tone with a quiet presence that sets it apart from the standard options available today.

Nice video again. The secret tone is in the honey. I wonder how these compare to the p90. Nice work, looks like it's ready for nuclear war. So inspiring to get off my lazy butt. Got a pickup analyzer setup so I can really measure the resonant peak of pickups and how certain things affect it including magnets/baseplates.. etc . Thanks again!

It's a lot like a p90, the aluminum does effect the tone in a way that I like, and the bee's wax potting isn't necessary, but if you have it, I think it's worth the effort.

Part of the reason they sound different is the aluminum cover. Aluminum is not used for pickup covers because it’s very conductive. That cases eddy currents that can dull the treble response of the pickup. Copper would likely do the same thing.
When Seth Lover was designing the Gibson humbucker he wanted the cover made from non magnetic stainless steel. He settled for nickel silver. Both are less conductive than aluminum.
Also the thinner the cover the better. I think the originals were stamped from sheet aluminum.
Also there’s no reason to use bees wax. Just using paraffin works fine.

That being the case, why does it sound so much better than those pickups? The truth is its much more expensive to manufacturer, and in a fight between profit and tone, profit seems to win, every time.

Pretty neat. Have you experimented with metals other than aluminum for the case?

Not yet, I have been working with aluminum bronze, might give it a try.
