Honestly I see the same thing, and technically he does know Zane because he's the little brother of Garroth as well as Zane always following him trying to join the shadow knights. But I always saw the admiration Zane had for Gene to be a bit over the top for admiration, and I feel like Zane having a crush on Gene (even a small one) make more sense on why he tried so hard to impress him
