Good luck finding the very rare old Insulators these day’s. They’re long gone picked over. Back in the Early 70s you could still occasionally find them. The super rare ones have been in collections for Decades. I have a handful of scarce insulators. My favorite is a White milk glass-it is marked CPR /Central Pacific RR insulator from the Early days. The others are scarce various colored ones and few unusual shaped insulators. I have been antique hunting for 45 year’s. The last 30 years I have not seen one scarce insulator in a Antique Mall or shop! Happy hunting Boys👍thanks for sharing! 🇺🇸

Care should be taken if climbing the poles since many could be rotten and not show it till it snaps in half when going up or coming down. Watch out for splinters as well because there will be areas where linemen have gone up with their climbers and pushed out pieces of wood that can easily catch on clothing. Areas that could have standing poles might not always be on the right-of-way and may short-cut across a field.

Do you have any idea what I can do with chipped and broken insulators? I’ve found a few nicer ones but a lot of broken ones. A few years ago I found an old dump site behind an unfinished subdivision between a cornfield and the interstate. There were many insulators but only one really nice one which I took that day. Yesterday, I went back to the site and grabbed the rest of the chipped insulators so I could get the copper wire scraps they left wrapped around the insulators, but I brought all the insulators with me so I could remove the wire at home. Now I have 9 busted insulators and I don’t know what to do with them but it seems like a waste to toss them out. Along with insulators there are dozens of old bottles that I want to go retrieve, most of which are still intact because the area is covered by trees and vines.
Also, along a railroad near me they just left the standing poles and have new higher power lines along the tracks. There are hundreds of insulators still out there on the poles and probably many more on the ground. I’ve been wanting to go collect some for a few years but still haven’t…maybe soon!!

That's a good question. We sometimes have collected broken insulators, if they are a rarer one, or just one that we don't have in our collection. Most of the time, we look at them and then end up leaving them behind for someone else to find in the future.
I'm sure someone out there has some good ideas for maybe some art projects or something that you could do with them, but I end up leaving most of them behind.

If the insulator is damaged it will reduce the value. There are rare occasions where a damaged insulator can command a substantial price. I have sold damaged insulators for over $100 if it is a extremely uncommon specimen. A good place to learn more about insulators is "Insulator Collectors on the Net" or the "National Insulator Association" these resources can be found online.

How much is a Hemingway 17 worth

I'm not an expert on values, but unless there's something particularly special about the one you have, it doesn't look like a Hemingray 17 is worth very much, judging by the ones selling on eBay currently for around the $5-$10 mark.
