- Eurofighter Typhoon performing the very best Performance Take-off at RAF Coningsby. Typhoon PTOs (Performance Take-offs) at RAF Coningsby are reminiscent of the English Electric Lightning, which would leave any spectator stunned. The Typhoons were using runway 07 and their PTOs went a lot more than just vertical, with a gorgeous turn out with an aileron roll too.

I'm an aviation writer, and years ago I experienced this type of departure in both the F-15D and the F/A-18B. It still tickles my tummy when I remember it.

Ohh just the best. From the moment the Typhoon leaves the tarmac to the point at which it slowly is obscured by mist and clouds, it's awesome. How to do a PTO and how to film. Skills on many levels. I might account for high proportion of views on this baby. Epitomise the very essence of power, skill and culmination of the very best in training. RAF Typhoon ❤❤❤

That is so cool I’ve been to see typhoons at RAF Coningsby but I have never seen a vertical climb. Last time I went there I saw a touch and go with afterburners

That is a very impressive aircraft. The F-15 does this a lot, but it's a larger aircraft with more powerful engines. Much respect to the 🇬🇧 from 🇺🇸.
Eh! Show me a video of a F15 going vertical after about 8 secs flat-top own power start!
The F15 needs to fly level to accelerate before going vertical. If the typhoon did that it would be supersonic by the time it reached the end of the runway.

Fantastic sound, we live approximately 1.5 mile from Blackpool airport and the other weekend when the airshow was on we could hear the typhoon take off from the airport, it was such a great noise my wife didn't know what it was I had to explain to her 😂

I watched an interview with a former RAF pilot and he said the power to weight is such that even when taking off to intercept a Russian bomber heading toward Scotland they don't even need the afterburners to get off the ground.
That is correct, Typhoons rarely use reheats on take off

The location to be behind the aircraft for PTO is really the best. The only downside is the main road behind you. We do miss this angle but one day, if the road is closed we will stream from there. But this position really gets all the magic from the PTO. OOOOHHHHH YEAHHHH

With advanced technology and performance it would be the Typhoon but the Lightning was way ahead before it’s time.
Pilots said the lightning was like a seat bolted to the front of 2 massive rockets.. so can the typhoon climb vertical at more then mk1?

Remember no ordnance , the 2 drop tanks that you see , are only there to give the pilot more than a couple of minutes in reheat.
Good things it's thrust is more than it's weight or not vertical climb, it would fall out the sky. Impressive jet, I think the most impressive remains Concorde, supersonic for thousands of miles while passengers sip champagne

We get the several times a week climbing and circling over Spalding usually in pairs you can here nothing else you can’t even use the phone.

Don't know if it's true, but I heard that a Typhoon locked up an F22 at Red Flag

Genuine question; I was in tbe RAF mid 70s stationed at RAF Wildenrath W Germany. We had Phantoms plus a lot of visitors: F15s, F16s, F104s Mirage 3s & 5s etc... all of them used to do what I'd call a "flat" takeoff. Noticed that for the last few years everything from the F15 up, now does something akin to an unrestricted climb...??? anyone know the reason for the change...?
Quick climbs and unrestricted climbs need to be cleared by ATC. Maybe where you were based it wasn’t easy to get that clearance? I don’t know that base very well but what we do know is that pilots love doing them.

Is it possible to get a medical waiver accepted for things like mild asthma or eczema (as a kid when you were 11) and a minor food allergy? Always wanted to be in the RAF but scared I’ll get turned away

Impressive, but not as impressive as an English Electric lightning, that baby can go past Mach 1 in a vertical climb, and it was designed in the 50's

Hi John, as far as fighter jets are concerned, our RAF fly the Typhoon and F-35B. Verdict= ooohhhhh yeah
The RAF has never flown F-16's.

Yes, each aircraft is advancement and feat of engineering. That’s like saying the Gloster Metoer could take off with a jet engine years before the Lightning.
The lightning was super impressive but it had fairly short endurance. Typhoon obviously had limits too but I think it can do things like this and yet keep flying longer.
