Different islands could offer different types of insects or birds which harm the trees and stunt growth. This could also lead to a new NPC that is tasked with dealing with these creatures.
It could also add a choice between shipping all the wood off to one centre, which is much cheaper, but adds the risk of bugs being spread, versus creating different mills
Every island should have a slightly different feel, like maybe a desert island with Cactrees? Or maybe a beachier island with Palm trees? Yeah, fun things like that
I like this idea! It would be kind of boring if all island were just packed full of trees to harvest. It would be nice to have hard islands like the desert one where you can build and sprawl out and harvest on nearby plentiful islands. OR! Have an irrigation systems put in so that you can transform desert islands into areas where you can plant and grow trees.
You should make it so when the cursor goes over an island on the map view the island pops up a little bit with maybe a bit of drop shadow to make it more obvious you are supposed to click on one.
Yes, the game should communicate to the user that it knows you're over the island. That could be size variation, a color outline, color variation, drop shadow, the rest of the map becomes grey-scale, etc. I would probably try to be stylistically consistent with previous mouse-over/selection visuals with allowances that this is a different part of the game... and you're selecting an entire island, not a square on the map or an item.
When you get into the different types of islands/woods, it would be really cool if different types of wood could dictate the gameplay, based on real-world wood properties. maybe some wood is more dense and heavy so it is slower on the conveyer belt, and more power is needed to cut it. But such wood-products would also be more valuable (at least for practical products versus decorative products). Also, the actual wood could of course also be coloured like it's real-life counterpart. I think it would add some more dynamic gameplay and also actually teach the player a bit regarding different types of wod.
There should be a merchant who is either native to one of the islands or comes every few days or weeks that can sell special upgrades or items that can greatly help ones journey to becoming the greatest lumberjack. Love your unique idea of the game , cant wait until it releases. Keep at it and safe lumbering!
i now u wont see this but what if wolves and bears wandered the forest and you could get hunters to get emmm and they drop food so you can feed your lumber jacks and fishermen that fish in rivers WITH A SPECIAL BUILDING and can catch fish i think its cool
Maybe there could be an icy island where there's mainly evergreen trees, Machines can freeze and stop working and a worker has to fix it, worker's homes have to have heating implemented into them, Maybe there could be blizzards where all workers have to stay in their home, and all machines will freeze and will have to be repaired after the blizzard is over.
I think it would be fun if you could purchase rival companies if you had enough money, and you could buy those companies for cheaper the less they are selling and producing. It incentivizes you to make a more successful company, maybe it would be good to add advertising too so you could sell more.
The islands and timber theme immediately make me think of the teak industry in the Philippines. And how the British Empire more or less destroyed all teak trees.... I think it might be fun, therefore, to make sure environmentalism and forest longevity be a gameplay factor. As for structures, maybe some shipwrecks would be cool (maybe you could even "harvest" them for reclaimed wood!).
BWDev, I love Lumbermill already together with your style, so I got some ideas for the game: First, I'm still sticking with the fact that there should be a way to upgrade tents into something comfier, say tent, large tent, shack, treehouse, bungalow. (I'm just saying) Second, that axe you got there got me thinking on an idea to upgrade or import new, upgraded axes. These new axes would chop faster. Third, if there are native tree species, there could also be native inhabitants, you can trade with them, like using their water or food as a boost, or find a treasure chest on pirate islands. You have, for example, you buy an island and get a notification: Hey, you found a treasure chest! You wanna open. Then there's a potential for loot, or a booby trap burning parts of the island. Then you can use the food of found native inhabitants to re-fertilize the burned part of the island. This also got me thinking on ship wreckages. Maybe you can repair to export more wood or transfer crew between islands? Maybe an upgrade system? To eventually get big ships? I don't really know, I'm not sure about the last part.
I think a shipping and export/import system would be really cool so you would need to build docks and you would be able to transfer unique wood to different islands it would also offer more ways to sell your products or just build a huge factory on one island and import your wood from the other islands.
I have binged watched this entire playlist over the last two days and it has been interesting to go from just watching the videos due to enjoying the game dev process, to now thinking this looks like a really cool game I would enjoy playing
I have a few suggestions, one I think some cool power sources could be windmills and water wheels in the rivers, two I think when you build buildings such as a storage area, it should require some logs or other wood to build, three I think if you are sticking with the islands you should make some ports to transport goods between islands. love what you’re doing, keep up the good work
One island could be a swamp like area where the wood is highly valuable but there’s a high chance of a disease spreading through your other island’s trees, high risk high reward.
maybe there can be temperate forest islands, with oak and maple trees native to it. At the north of the map, there can be ice islands with small amounts of pine trees. Below them there can be subarctic islands with more pine trees and less snow. And there will be 1 mystical island, full of the ??? trees.
For the "blueprint" idea, it might look more natural to have the blueprint on a table, with drafting tools scattered around. The Edges of the paper could be curled, or held down with either tools or other means. This could also be used when "investing" in new machinery for the island, the blueprint could show a preview of what the player is buying, and simulate the player's character actually planning it out (hence the blueprint being on the table surrounded by drafting tools)
Very cool! I like that you draw everything out visually in Aseprite first, and then actually create it. Impressive that they look identical too :D Definitely excited to see you add more!
This is gonna be great for hard-core players who want a challange cause they could try starting on like a super small island, also it's just gonna be awesome in general, keep up the good work
You could add something to the islands available for purchase saying whether they've been owned before or not. On the previously owned islands there could be broken structures and machinery you could either repair to use or scrap to sell.
Like I said earlier in another comment, on another video, I believe you should be able to build a dock, possibly custom, a dock could make trading with the other companies of the other islands, or importing log types. You could also add buildable boats to sell or trade (prefab or custom) With the coasts, maybe you could get a driftwood collector, or something. I think more species to be added should be: Oak, Birch, and Spruce.More special types of trees could be cherry, Jungle, Ghost (a ghostly tree) Willow, and maybe Orchids, To harvest fruit, however, it isn’t really lumber. (Ik this. Moment goes of for ages, but it’s almost done), Possible machines, Tree Breeder (Mix trees), Some sort of, tree chopper (like a vehicle), and maybe a painter, to paint furniture. Just a few quality of life things, Maybe add a ramp, to get to the underground, or an asphalt path type. That’s all for my suggestions, I love this game so far, Keep up the amazing work. -Radkav
Some islands should have special restrictions or bonuses, like nature reserve islands where you can't build big noisy machines so you have to chop wood and ship if off to be processed elsewhere, or an island that is sunnier so solar panels are more powerful there.
I have nothing to do with gamedev (heck, I'm not even playing games) but I just love watching these videos and seeing the steady progress you're making. Thank you for doing it!
Hey, not sure if you thought about it but plywood making from birch would be cool, splitting logs, glueing up, setting up a glue drying storage/ slow conveyor etc
Awesome update man. Every Devlog gets me more and more excited for the game! lol. Was also awesome to hear and see my name :P I like the idea Sketch WizBaby said in a comment of the island popping up slightly when hovered over with a little drop shadow. Maybe a quick one shot audio with it and after clicking another confirmation one shot sound. (thinking of the Zelda OOT main menu sounds if that gives a better idea as to what I'm referring to).
A trading depot should be part of the map. Meaning that the closer your island is to the depot, the cheaper it is to transport goods. This would add a locational advantage to some islands on top of the flora and fauna.
I know that this could be a lite out of the genre, but you could do so the largest islands can generate with a volcano. This volcano can erupt and when it does it destroys/damages some buildings but from the ashes trees grow quicker and becomes larger.
add caves with minor rescources one could also gain from, while more time consuming and expensive with better payout and said materials could be copper, gold, diamond, coal, and whatnot. coal could be used to power machines to make them more efficient or as the way to keep them running. one could also use rescources as a method of purchasing land off of other people and they can do the same (assuming the people are an ai or other that attempts to but land as well) as a way to get land pre-owned or other such things, such as higher cost tools or more powerful and efficient ones.
In the underground bit of the map to make it more realistic instead of many small ponds it is usually one big pond and small ones nearby and some places that are far from these ponds be dry
you can make each island have its own wind speed and temperature. for example, islands near the equator have higher temperature so solar panels would be more effective. you can add windmills so places with higher windspeed would have higher power output
What about stuff like berry bushes which could buff worker speed or a pre-existing building in which your workers could reside. I feel like small details that slightly affected gameplay could make islands feel more personal and interestaing.
you should add in bears that protect an area of an island and attack your lumberjacks when they get to close. you can also add in a hunter to get rid of the bears
Hey, I love your work and I love how this game is turning out. I'm brazilian and I'd be glad to help with the translation of the game, in case you need it, of course. Keep it up man, cheers
on different islands you could have ruins like a castle. mine, temple (that could be on a jungle island) , red woods , creepy (maybe). and hide them hidden on the island.
You should add like a boat at the border of the main island that’s open you to the map, and then, when you click on a island of the map, there’s like a little animation of the boat that leaves the island and take you to the island that you select (sorry for the English but I’m Italian)
It would be cool if every island had a randomly generated name that appears when hovering the island on the map with the mouse together with some basic information about the island. Maybe each island could have an individual difficulty based on its fauna. A map with fast growing trees like spruce would be easier but the sold wood is cheaper. An upgrade of your machines would need too much money so you have to claim a more difficult island in order to succeed later in the game.
Mangroves that are in the shallows/swamplands might be a cool addition, slower movement speed for the lumberjacks but faster growth rate or some similar play
1st off the game looks great. I'm guessing you probably have something in mind for this already, but about where the wood goes. you could have cargo ships arrive periodically to pick up wood. Maybe stuff branching off of that idea like having to store wood while you wait for a crago ship (idk). Anyways your game looks like it will be chill and fun, wishlisted!
This would be great for the Shipping/Trading Idea. You could make deals with other companies to supply resources to one another, or Trade for a certain Tree Species or Resource.
if you don't like the map on the wall, it could be a rolled map, and it is splayed out on a table with your characters hands holding it down or something idk
This would be really cool as a multiplayer type thing. You could either work together to build up a single lumber company or work as rival lumber companies.
structures on islands would be awesome! like an old american homestead, or a crashed ship on the shore, and maybe somehow harvest their material? and sell it for more, because it came from an old place
You can have some islands which speed up production rate of all buildings with a caveat that those islands also have natural disasters like cyclones & earthquakes (like the sim city games). Further to add content to this type of gameplay, you could have insurance in game to protect from these disasters.
Maybe some of the islands with the more lucrative trees also come with some hazards. For example, there could be a fungal disease that kills off the trees pretty easily or invasive species of birds/insects. The island could also be especially susceptible to extreme weather, lightning, heavy rain, and winds. Having a risk reward factor to the islands would be a neat addition.
New power ideas: 1. You can place a water wheel in the rivers and draw power from that. 2. When you cur down trees maybe you can burn their leaves or its needles for power.
I think it would be cool if the islands had different features too, like mountains, canyons, and maybe even a few animals? Woodpeckers? Termites that break down you factories?
There should be a rare chance, maybe something like 1/130 chance, to get diseased trees. You won’t know until you try to use it for anything when it won’t work in the system of making furniture.
like others said different biomes for the islands could be good, maybe each island has a specific color and single tree on it, indicating the biome and most common type of tree present on that island. but there could also be some uncommon lootable things like shipwrecks, wood cabins, etc. that could contain all kinds of stuff, from rare wood types to a few machines like conveyors or something. your island idea overall reminds me of the islands on Animal Crossing for the Switch, so maybe you can -steal- borrow some ideas from that.
Looking at the map, it seems like some islands are taller while others are closer to sea level. I know that flamingos usually like to stand in ankle deep water, so maybe only the flatland/marsh areas will have flamingos? Just a thought :)
When you get notifications in the top right like "Machine broke down", you should consider adding a setting in the future where the icon is listed next to the colored word so colorblind people will have more fun in the game.
Great game! Just maybe you should add some animals. They could be purely decorative or they could serve some purpose like you could hire hunters to feed the workers or otherwise the lumberjacks can't work. But that could be a little bit annoying. But anyway great video and game. Definetly subbed.
I don’t personally love the idea of having to race towards buying other islands (because if I don’t, someone else will). This feels like a game for playing slowly and for enjoying the actual process of playing, and not something you want to rush through and get the most amount of money in the least amount of time
Maybe some rare islands could have really fast tree regrowth but they flood all the time so after a while you need to rebuild everything on that island.
It would be awesome if when you bought an island a throwing axe went and nailed the area of the map
Awesome idea!
Nice Idea, I would love this 👍
@@gurkenburg. Perhaps different coloured axes for simulated company/ies and player, too. Just a though :)
Archipelagos usually have the same types of islands since all of their islands are in the same area and have similar climates
I sense hammerfell vibes from this
Different islands could offer different types of insects or birds which harm the trees and stunt growth. This could also lead to a new NPC that is tasked with dealing with these creatures.
It could also add a choice between shipping all the wood off to one centre, which is much cheaper, but adds the risk of bugs being spread, versus creating different mills

Have an irrigation systems put in so that you can transform desert islands into areas where you can plant and grow trees.
I hope that makes it in the game. Love the Idea 👍
I want this
Yeah, and some should be with considerably less trees on them.
maybe also fantasy island, like a space island
Niiice, love the whole archipelago/land-ownership idea!
Cheers man!
two legends
You should make it so when the cursor goes over an island on the map view the island pops up a little bit with maybe a bit of drop shadow to make it more obvious you are supposed to click on one.
Ooh that could look cool!
That or just a color shift. To show you are highlighting it.
Yes, the game should communicate to the user that it knows you're over the island. Like ironwood or balsa wood.
There should be a merchant who is either native to one of the islands or comes every few days or weeks that can sell special upgrades or items that can greatly help ones journey to becoming the greatest lumberjack. Love your unique idea of the game , cant wait until it releases. Keep at it and safe
lumbering!
Wow ! The map Generator is Incredible !! Well done
Perhaps some larger islands have mountains with more profitable trees but also have dangers such as bears or wolves
Add an end game island with expensive but hard to grow trees like Purpleheart or Ebony!
i now u wont see this but what if wolves and bears wandered the forest and you could get hunters to get emmm and they drop food so you can feed your lumber jacks and fishermen that fish in rivers WITH A SPECIAL BUILDING and can catch fish i think its cool
Great idea I hope he accepts it
Maybe the map can be nailed to the wall instead of it hanging on the wall by rope!
Hardcore Island Idea: Savannah biome where very few trees grow
I think it would be fun if you could purchase rival companies if you had enough money, and you could buy those companies for cheaper the less they are selling and producing. It incentivizes you to make a more successful company, maybe it would be good to add advertising too so you could sell more.

are you going to include an ability to "buyout" the simulated companies? or set up shipping lanes between islands?
I also want this
I WANT SHIPPING DOCKS !!!!!
i was thinking of somthing like this because i feel hat there has to be a way to get islands that were bought by one of the simulated players
What about a snowy island to shake things up? With raindeers and pines. Or a jungle-ish island with tall trees and lots of fauna
BWDev, I love Lumbermill already together with your style, so I got some ideas for the game:

Loving the updates and I can't wait to see the next update!
Seeing you not just solve problems at the flick of a wrist makes me feel better about being so new to game dev. Your videos are helpful and inspiring
His voice makes for some easy listening! The islands look SLICK
For the "blueprint" idea, it might look more natural to have the blueprint on a table, with drafting tools scattered around. it would be cool if there was a Island with a underground full of gigant blue mushrooms trees that could be used to Make blue furniture

the island update is amazing!!
Some islands should have special restrictions or bonuses, like nature reserve islands where you can't build big noisy machines so you have to chop wood and ship if off to be processed elsewhere, or an island that is sunnier so solar panels are more powerful there.
Love the game so far and look forward to watching the dev logs each time they come out.
I have nothing to do with gamedev (heck, I'm not even playing games) but I just love watching these videos and seeing the steady progress you're making. Thank you for doing it!

A swamp island could be cool- harder to build structures, but trees and other plants grow faster! Love your vids!
This is really inspiring! I've been watching this series for a while now and it's inspired me to start my own development series! Good luck!
A trading depot should be part of the map. Meaning that the closer your island is to the depot, the cheaper it is to transport goods. This would add a locational advantage to some islands on top of the flora and fauna.
In oak based islands there could be squirrels. Maybe they are just something to look at or they actualy plant trees because they burry nuts
In game development you are free as a bird to do anything , Soar through creative clouds of ideas.
It would be cool if you added mountains. Or something similar which works as a barrier and makes you have to manoeuvre around it
In the underground bit of the map to make it more realistic instead of many small ponds it is usually one big pond and small ones nearby and some places that are far from these ponds be dry
you can make each island have its own wind speed and temperature. for example, islands near the equator have higher temperature so solar panels would be more effective. you can add windmills so places with higher windspeed would have higher power output
Love the island setup! One with Eucalyptus trees would be awesome when you get to designing them all!
BWDev, I have been awaiting your return with great anticipation
I love how realistic the first few seconds of the game are.
Great stuff man. I love this game and cannot wait to get it for when it comes out!
Feels like there was more comments on the GameDev side (what scripts you were making etc) which I really liked.
The land on the map should be a slightly brighter green in my opinion - it's missing contrast.
New power ideas:
1. You can place a water wheel in the rivers and draw power from that.
2. When you cur down trees maybe you can burn their leaves or its needles for power.
Great idea to work on the islands more the game is looking almost finished :)
Nice Video, very epic. Its always cool to see people do procedural generation, since I know that I want to do it in my game at some point. Good job!
Have an island overrun with beavers, that sabotage your machines. :D
I think it would be cool if the islands had different features too, like mountains, canyons, and maybe even a few animals? Woodpeckers? Termites that break down you factories?
This game looks SOOO cool! May add termites that will eat your wood if you’re not careful enough.
Maybe it is also fun to have a small chance that some island have abandoned sawmills, where you could get some materials for you're own sawmill.
Looking really nice, do add a hightlight when you mouseover an island for more feedback :)
Add a building called the Port, that you can build on the islands, to transport the products. Or have one auto-generated on each island
Other structures could include Easter Island-esque statues? Crevices/gorges. Giant boulders.
It would really be cool if some Islands in the north have snow ans some in the South were a bit tropical
You should add some white sensitivity foam at the edges of all the islands, maybe even animate it.
Nice Devlog, keep it flowing 👍
You could put the grid behind the islands. That would make them pop a little more. The map is beautiful as is though!
excited for Lumbermill to be released! Great vlogs 👏
There should be a rare chance, maybe something like 1/130 chance, to get diseased trees. You won’t know until you try to use it for anything when it won’t work in the system of making furniture.
You should make a small chance for beehives to be on tress and will attack your employees if they try to chop that tree
like others said different biomes for the islands could be good, maybe each island has a specific color and single tree on it, indicating the biome and most common type of tree present on that island.
but there could also be some uncommon lootable things like shipwrecks, wood cabins, etc. that could contain all kinds of stuff, from rare wood types to a few machines like conveyors or something.
your island idea overall reminds me of the islands on Animal Crossing for the Switch, so maybe you can -steal- borrow some ideas from that.
Another tree you could make is a Red Chestnut Tree.
Really nice progress Ben!
wow thats a great sponsor! I love that game engine
7:34 Look at the island in the upper right corner and the 3 islands nearby, i think everyone can say it's Pacman
Man i love this project...really cool looking game
Gotta love smart Game Devs that actually know what they are doing LMAO Great work Ben!
This feels like a game for playing slowly and for enjoying the actual process of playing, and not something you want to rush through and get the most amount of money in the least amount of time
There will likely also be the option to turn off competition!
Really awesome work, can't wait to play this game!!
Maybe some rare islands could have really fast tree regrowth but they flood all the time so after a while you need to rebuild everything on that island.
