Really good idea, but it would also be a good idea to try and have ‘groups’ of trees, so that they group together more so it seems more natural then completely random.
Do you know the reason behind such a high grade? In other words, what are some things that you were proud of? What are some things that you could have improved on?
@@James_Moton I stuck mostly to my strengths I think, leaning more towards coursework projects than exams, and changed modules early on when stuff didn't seem like it would be very interesting - was very glad with the subjects I did end up doing! Only regret really was living up a massive hill in second year and having to walk up it every day 😆
So far, the game is looking really good! Suggestion: I would like to see beaches on the coast, as well as some type of bush in the forests. I think these would make the landscape feel more natural, instead of only having trees and smaller details. But otherwise I think the map and landscape looks really nice, especially with those new borders! :)
The game looks really good. Idk, u could maybe add some animations, like wind. So the tree moves a little depending on the wind, Waves to water. Otherwise, I really do like it. Could be cool with beaches as I read in everyone comments
Congrats on your First! That's a superb achievement. 👍 One thing that you could consider is making the ground under the trees more brown because grass doesn't grow throughout a forest. That would also give your trees more pop! Great Dev log, congrats again.
Are you considering adding more trees? Red and yellow cedars could be cool, they might only be on some islands and have a higher value. Also, some bushes like salmonberrrys or thimbelberries with either a purely cosmetic purpose or with something special like a lumberjack speed boost might add some more life and variety to this amazing game.
Good job on the first! Maybe add logs (like the one in the concept art that you drew a few videos ago) as objects that can be cleared, and definitely add bridges if islands are going to have... sub islands(?) like the last island in this video did (9:43)
You should try to make a coop mode which would make it so you and your friends can play together and you and your friend would share money think of it as a Minecraft world if the host leaves then you leave and you must be steam friends for them to join ( I really wanna play with my friend in a coop mode )
A suggestion from someone who's done forests in isometric games before: I found making trees occasionally shake in the wind really helps the overall feel (I had a semi-random wave run across the tiles in my map and it really helped with a gentle wind sound effect loop for atmosphere)
I enjoy checking in with this project so much every week, thank you! Fallen logs for forest variation, and for beach too: snags that have fallen into the water from the land's edge. Mushrooms in the deep forest, flowers on the clearings. That offset trees idea Craft Blox mentioned to break up the perfect "orchard rows" look is a great idea. Seconding/thirding that....
I think the details in the forests will really bring this game together more, having specific details for certain types of forest is a brilliant idea. Perhaps a slight swaying in the trees to make it more natural, or maybe even a fox that comes out from one tree and dashes to another. You could vary the trees more too, maybe randomizing them and randomly offseting them on each tile. Keep up the good work!
For the borders of the island: I think the best looking option would be if you made it so that the island turns to a thin line of beach which then goes underneath the water in a way that you can still see it through the water (water is transparent) for a little bit. Also, for forest details: big rocks that you have to dig out to put things in their place might add fun details and fun gameplay.
Wow, this is looking really good! Do you plan on adding in a night/day look? Also for the trees, I would suggest varying the looks a little more. Keep up the awesome stuff!
Hey I got a suggestion. Make it so there are multiple islands all around far away where you can build bridges to get to them. You then can route the conveyor belts to your main factory!
I recently went camping at Hecla island in Manitoba, A big part of islands in Canadian lakes are lighthouses so that the steam tugs coming down from the northern lumber camps would be able to navigate at night. I think the shoreline would look more complete with a lighthouse
Awesome progress! My recommendations: 1. Add fallen trees in the forest 2. Add rocks in the forest 3. Add small lakes in the forest 4. Add bushes and more flowers to the forest 5. Add fog and clouds, in and above the forest
Congrats on your graduation! Been following for a bit now, I think it would be so fun to have a bit of wildlife in the game.. the occasional rabbit bouncing across the forest, birds flying around and maybe even a flock coming out of a chopped down tree! Just an idea to make the environment feel more alive!
For details I recommend adding a few dirt patches and pebbles to the grass, also for the maple trees its a bit off that their shadows are darker than the pine trees so you might wanna look into that, but overall looking good
Some ideas to details I would like to see: animals wondering (like squirrels, deers, and birds flying in the skies), leaves falling down, water "waves" , bottles coming to shore with some side quests.
As for details I think big rocks, where you have to build your lumber mill around and can’t place conveyor belts or buildings. You can only dismantle them with enough collected resources so in late game they don’t hinder you building a massive factory!
two suggestions for trees: possibly making them transparent textures that can be overlayed onto the grass, so they can be offset from tiles so they look more natural and possibly making a shader in future to add a soft swaying to the tree textures - giving the impression that they sway in the wind, while the grass in its shadow will also be affected
You made this game while studying, you get the highest grade, and this game... its getting better and better. I am studying programming by my own and because of people like you I started messing with games and I kinda love it! So i hope you reach your goals and end this amazing game!!
Nice! I find that my favorite part of creating things is coming up with solutions to problems that arise. It might be a little frustrating at first, but it's always so satisfying when you come to an answer.
Absolutely loving the journey so far and it is really inspiring! I think adding some beaches as island borders would look really cool and personally would love seeing sunflowers dotted about
Congratulations on receiving a first! I like the rocks that you made but I can appreciate your commitment to make the islands more like those reference images. Perhaps you can make the tiles near the water less grassy.
It'd be cool to have an "Easter egg" flower tile, like a unique species or something. I personally find games more engaging when I can imagine the maker having fun adding their own little touch to their game (but, I guess as an indie developer the whole game is your "own little touch").
From a second year comp sci student who lives on a Canadian island very similar to your "inspiration", congrats on graduating, and with such a high grade as well! Its a massive achievement!
I think some bushes would fit right into the forest, maybe like blueberries, lingon berries and maybe even a few mushrooms. These could possibly even have some kind of roll in the game! :D
The coastline looks great! I like the rocks but I agree maybe having them be less of a focus would look good. I also like some of the suggestions here about having some beach areas. And that's awesome that you graduated with such high grades! You should be super proud! I'm digging the new tree designs as well. Nice job!
I think you could add more with the ground, like especially dirt patches. Maybe around the buildings you could have more dirt to accentuate the difference between the natural forest and the man-made parts. Maybe once you cut down a tree the ground could turn brown and any further trees planted in that spot could be on dirt instead of grass. Also, definitely make a shipyard/harbor!
i recently got to know about your channel . the first video i saw was the one year of unity game development in 10 minutes. I absolutely loved your videos : keep it up i actually got a lot of motivation from to continue on my game too so thanks a lot And btw wishlisted lumbermill on steam Subbed :)
I wtf'd when I saw the uni of sheffield, I actually also just graduated with from there a comp sci 1st! Crazy how i found your channel randomly and unbeknownst to me we've probably been in the same lectures the past year congrats on the first and gl with the future!
No way! That’s so funny, almost definitely been in the same lectures. Congrats on the first man! Had a few sheff people message me but none on the same year and course 😆
You could add some ground color variation by making the color be more brown the denser the trees are ontop. so open spaces could be more green then the rest. basically simulating the debri and needles of the trees that cover the ground in forests.
why not make the shallow water its own tile. after the island is generated, find all empty tiles that are adjacent to land tiles and create a shallow water tile there. if you want that sort of gradient effect with the shallow water, you could simply make multiple types of shallow water tiles and repeat the process for all empty tiles that are adjacent to your level 1 shallow tiles or something. the rounded corners could be achieved with the same logic you used to set the sprite of a path tile based on its neighbors.
The problem you'd get in this case is that the offset he was talking about is impossible with this tiling system. When you're looking from a particular side with the camera, he wants to show more shallows on the front of the island and less shallows on the back, but because the tiles have a set size, this effect is unachievable.
@@FrederickWillemV hmmm i hadn't thought about that, but i feel like there must be some way to get around that with clever spritework, just like what i was saying about rounded corners. idk, you might be right
At the moment the forests lack an understory and I think it would be a nice addition. It would be mainly ferny in pine-heavy areas and more varied in broadleaf areas. and maintain access tracks to be able to move lots of logs
great work! One thing I noticed is the stems of the flowers were hard to make out on the grass floor and could really only see the flower part. so it looked almost like sparkles on the ground.
A couple of suggestions would be to have some small wildlife. Birds, squirrels, that kind of stuff. Also having the tree sway in the breeze would really breathe some life into it.
A good idea is to have some islands with taller trees variations, much like the Brazilian araucarias, or other superlative trees. It's like a pine tree but very tall, even reminds me of the Mega Taiga biome in Minecraft. Good luck with the game
Hey, if you want some more details, you might want to add some small animals peeking around trees every ones in a while, or a seagull flighing over the water or something small
Congrats on graduating! The game is looking really great. Kind'a miss the old trees, but the new ones look better for forrest purposes. Also, your devlogs are really good, they inspired me to start making devlogs too. Suggestion: -Beaches on the coast (an other sort of dephtring thing) -Biomes or seasons -Water Animation would be cool too, but it sounds difficult to do with your methode - bushes and mushrooms -Animals (especially bears would cool)
I love the little details in the forest, though I think it could use some bigger things too that would be less common, like bigger rocks or even something like a beehive
On some of my travels, I noticed that everything sprouting from the ground was very close to a channel of water, a stream, maybe underground water sources were the cause of some of the ones I've seen. To create an additional layer of believability to your generation, you could focus on first generating a branching river, then sprouting everything around this, as well as the coast. I think that would make everything look much more natural, while also giving your islands a sort of visual flow. Could even incorporate directing water to grow more trees as a game element, idk?
On the subject of aesthetics, you could make it so the grass tile looks trodden after removing a building from them and slowly grows back over a random period of time.
A way you can gain some performance is by running your calculations it on a thread that is different than the main thread. Then you can jump back to the main thread by adding the calculations found to a Queue (preferably a class that contains the information needed for the shallow water effect) and on Update check if the Queue count is greater than 0. If it is, then do whatever you need to do to make the effect appear on the screen. That way you can process more calculations as well as not freezing up the first frame for a lot of time.
Congratulations for a degree! My suggestions: - Enemy, like a bear or a wolf. You could hire hunter (Control him like in RTS) to kill them. You could also add gallery of achievements from animals (Alpha's fur, Hog's tusk). - BIOMES: Desert(Rich in coal and other minerals) Taiga, Jungle and much more.
My suggestion for adding more detail in the forrest would be to create some animals which don't spawn in areas you are building in. Like some Rabbits and Rabbitholes or Deers etc. .
At first I read this as "The End of the Vlog!" and I panicked! Glad you're still going, love this project, and your documentation of it. Maybe some driftwood along the shores? Keep up the amazing work, and good luck!
I still think, that each of the islands should have a native tree like one might have an apple tree and that went a lumber jack chops a tree a sapling of that type should also be added to the inventory to add the challenge of sustaining as well, with the sapling mechanic. For example an apple tree sapling can only be planted on the island it was chopped on. Just an idea
Thanks for these they are great game looks so good. Small thought around flowers I think the random looks a little chaotic. Noise generator (like you did the islands) might be a better fit? Then you can little fields or pasture out flowers which might feel more natural? Take it leave it I’m just excited to see how this is growing!
dont know if you where already thinking about adding it but for when the player unlocks more islands, a boat transport system for product. and as you get more trades between you see more ascetic water traffic which could help the player see the proggresion
Some suggestions: MORE TREES new islands like desert, snow (thats a suggestion i stole) Playing multiplayer (so we can build the stuff with friends and probaly have fun) A deeper underground Mountains A way deeper ocean (and some fisherman so oceans would make sense) and you can use these by... idk Pigs, sheeps, wolfes and stuff WAY deeper underground (has diamonds, emerald, uranium, platinum and other special stuff) Hope that makes a GOOD suggestion
I think a very nice feature would be some animals running around. It'd probably be a bit harder to implement but it will make the forest feel much more alive.
A good idea would be to add events such as worker injury, tree disease, forest fire, animals such as woodpeckers damaging trees, and termites. These would add all sorts of problems to deal with and you, the player would have to deal with these issues.
I think that either u need to have very high output buildings to make late game still able to have high numbers, or a late game landfill to create new items
maybe instead of the trees being in a line with each other they could be randomly offset from the centre of the tile to make it appear less man-made
He should definitely do that!
Really good idea, but it would also be a good idea to try and have ‘groups’ of trees, so that they group together more so it seems more natural then completely random.
Yes i totaly agree, even one or two pixels would realy help
Ah, like how Minecraft does snall plant objects.

I'd recommend adding some variation to the trees by doing a tiny bit of randomized hue spin on them. Keep up the great work!
Agree.
With a randomised hue spin and the tile offset suggested earlier I think it would really make them look great.

you can add bees or other small insects maybe a little bunny
Yeah maybe there'd be one little bunny on each island and he would be like the mascot of the game
I feel like details such as insects might be too small for the for the world and pixel size being used. But I could see animals being a good addition.

Some suggestions:
MORE TREES
new islands like desert, snow (thats a suggestion i stole)
Playing multiplayer (so we can build the stuff with friends and probaly have fun)
A deeper underground
Mountains
A way deeper ocean (and some fisherman so oceans would make sense) and you can use these by... idk
Pigs, sheeps, wolfes and stuff
WAY deeper underground (has diamonds, emerald, uranium, platinum and other special stuff)
Hope that makes a GOOD suggestion
how would a desert work? trees dont really grow in the dessert
da vid Yeah. Processing Cactus?
da vid cactus and palms near the lakes, they are rare but worth a lot!
@@David-vz4yk geuss that could work
A few Ideas: Bushes and Boulders; Levels on the island(kinda simmilar to animal crossing) + wtaerfalls and rivers
Levels? You mean like a underground level? Because that's already done
@@sugnoma667 No overground levels. Like a mountain/hill
Congrats on passing your course Benedict!
4.0 GPA you are a smart lad! Congrats on graduating!
Congratulations on your degree man!!! Beautiful game
OMG dude, I appreciate you so much and congrats!
Leaves dotted around would be amazing!
Congrats on you Degree definitely you worked hard for it!
I think that either u need to have very high output buildings to make late game still able to have high numbers, or a late game landfill to create new items
add some rocks on the grass as well, like the flowers but rocks.
I would add either sand or pebbles to the shore. Also, the new trees look/feel less isometric and more billboard-like. Great video :)
The game is looking better and better! Still remember the first couple videos, the art looks so much better :)
Congratulations on your degree! Good work, sir!
