Dude, Brendan Fraser got washed out of Hollywood. He doesn't make movies anymore after some really bad roles he took in the early 2000's. I love the guy, but he's not coming back. Let's also not forget there was a really bad divorce and the ex-wife took everything with her.
To be honest, this is one of those movies in which I was rooting for the villain to win. I really wanted the mummy to complete her ritual, transform Tom Cruise into an Egyptian god and that he had succumbed to her offer... The movie would have been a hundred times more interesting that way...

There's a reason the mummy was good the first time. It had funny dialogue, character development, was kinda creepy at some moments, and it had a cute romantic dynamic. It was borderline cheesy and intelligent. I mean, sometimes the small moments in a movie is what makes you want to watch it over and over again. I don't see this version having any memorable qualities.
If all those efforts had gone with the making of another Brendan Fraser's Mummy 4 with settings back to Egypt, We would have had a block buster hit, just like the first Mummy.
Sound direction seems to have declined over that past several years. Everyone just makes sound effects and music louder than the dialogue then tries to fit a wilhelm scream wherever they can. I'm sick of having to turn up my volume to hear the actors speak then turn it down again when one of them picks up a fork and shatters my ear drums.

Everyone, allow me to nerd out...this movie IS NOT a remake of the 1999 version, nor is it a remake of the 1932 version. It is instead an R rated reboot by request of Universal Studios and is contracted to be the first in a series of horror reboots featuring Frankenstein, Dracula, The Wolf Man, and Creature From the Black Lagoon. So this has nothing to do with any other movies other than the fact that its source of licensing was Universal's original Mummy played by Boris Karloff.

This looks way over the top to the point I keep rolling my eyes during every action shot... I'm a VFX artist but man, can we stop over using CG like that? It looks unreal and anti-climatic. Directors need to get their shit together and focus on more important areas such as story and not "Let's make it as over the top as possible even if it makes no sense cause it's 'cool!'" -_-

It's all about time and space. If you take the time to establish the space a character is in and what they're doing, I don't care if it's all real or completely animated. The problem with a lot of modern effects films is they don't give their viewers enough time to actually comprehend where characters are or what they're doing. So the VFX guys who animate them know what's happening, but no one in the audience does. I've noticed that some of the most successful effects films don't fall into this trap. They take the time to let their audiences get a sense of location and weight of the action. The Moria bridge sequence in the Fellowship of the Rings is a good example.We see the gap the characters have to jump, they consider it, then jump with effort and we see how difficult and scary it is. compare that to the goblin town sequence in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, where the characters dash and tumble a mile a minute and you can hardly keep track of where they are or what's happening. Sorry, long rant :)

But the truth is you can't really judge something before you see it. And you can't anticipate how the world will react to it just because you might think it's a bad idea.
Not sure about this version of an old story. The sarcophagus looked scifi, like it was from an alien world. The mummy had no bandages wrapped around it. The woman did not look Egyptian. The trailer showed no scenes from inside a pyramid. This looks like an action movie for actions sake, with a naked woman with tats as the villain, and the tats are not as interesting as the Girl with the Dragon Tatoo

1 and 2 is good but since they replaced rachel weiss on the 3rd installment it kinda ruined that for me... the premise of the 3rd one is interesting but changing the actor for the iconic role is a turn off for me every time i see her in the scene it ruins the immersion for me.

Instead of making it like a new Godzilla movie with dull grey/blue coloring, they should have gone all out mystery on this one. Arabic music, making the plagues and curses from the mummy subtle and indirect at first - make us wonder why these things happen, a real sarcophagus instead of that grey stone thingy, let them solve some riddles and shit and THEN make the mummy appear at the end without showing us in the trailer
This is the problem with movies today, they feel so overproduced that I feel a complete detachment from reality watching them. I feel like I am watching Cartoon Network. That's what I miss from earlier film history - the effects were limited, but I felt much more immersed in what was happening due to that fact.

This might be the first movie where I will honestly say that Brendan Fraiser should be the star, not Tom Cruise. Fraiser made The Mummy what it was, perfect action and perfect comedy, not too over the top; just great fun.

It's all about time and space. If you take the time to establish the space a character is in and what they're doing, I don't care if it's all real or completely animated. The problem with a lot of modern effects films is they don't give their viewers enough time to actually comprehend where characters are or what they're doing. So the VFX guys who animate them know what's happening, but no one in the audience does. I've noticed that some of the most successful effects films don't fall into this trap. They take the time to let their audiences get a sense of location and weight of the action. The Moria bridge sequence in the Fellowship of the Rings is a good example.We see the gap the characters have to jump, they consider it, then jump with effort and we see how difficult and scary it is. compare that to the goblin town sequence in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, where the characters dash and tumble a mile a minute and you can hardly keep track of where they are or what's happening. Sorry, long rant :)

But the truth is you can't really judge something before you see it. And you can't anticipate how the world will react to it just because you might think it's a bad idea.
Not sure about this version of an old story. The sarcophagus looked scifi, like it was from an alien world. The mummy had no bandages wrapped around it. The woman did not look Egyptian. The trailer showed no scenes from inside a pyramid. This looks like an action movie for actions sake, with a naked woman with tats as the villain, and the tats are not as interesting as the Girl with the Dragon Tatoo

Instead of making it like a new Godzilla movie with dull grey/blue coloring, they should have gone all out mystery on this one. Arabic music, making the plagues and curses from the mummy subtle and indirect at first - make us wonder why these things happen, a real sarcophagus instead of that grey stone thingy, let them solve some riddles and shit and THEN make the mummy appear at the end without showing us in the trailer
This is the problem with movies today, they feel so overproduced that I feel a complete detachment from reality watching them. I feel like I am watching Cartoon Network. That's what I miss from earlier film history - the effects were limited, but I felt much more immersed in what was happening due to that fact.

Brenden Fraser will show up near the middle of the film in his old Mummy getup, albeit slightly older now and a little overweight, pump his shotgun, shoot the mummy in her face, and say a classic one-liner. Then the movie will completely forget about Tom Cruise and this new chick and go back to Rick O'Conell, Evey, and Jonathan.

I agree, I only liked him in vanilla sky and interview with the vampire. I haven't seen all of his films but those are the only two I can recall of where his characters had some kind of complexity. All his films over the last how many years have been action with characters that lack depth. :-/
