I think youtubers retiring in 2024 is just a natural progression: youtubers are getting married, having children, and maturing beyond the platform in ways that *require* them to retire to focus on their own lives.

Many of these people retiring are in their late 30s or older and have been around making content in some way since 2009-2012. I would probably want a break too if I was making videos for over a decade.

Also, the ad revenue will keep coming in for years, so they don't really need to create more. Also a factor.

UA-cam is also really harsh when you do need a break, it awards you when you upload consistently, hence why daily december is a popular thing. When you upload inconsistently or take a longer break, then you get punished as your contented gets shown less. This job is not to underestimate, especially if you get a family.

@@coolbrotherf127 i think some of these youtubers are retiring because even though they might have 1mil plus subscribers, their channels are dying - 20-30k views per video when they used to get 500k - 1mil views.
anyway, saying one is retiring at because you've been running a youtube business for 10 years is bizarre. People, that is 'regular people', with businesses and careers do those jobs for the rest of their lives.
Butchers, plumbers, electricians, lawyers, dentists, pilots - people don't go 'i've been running my business for 10 years therefor now i'm closing it down'.

When I was 18, I had spent the prior 6 years "knowing" that I was going to go down one path in life when my choice of university didn't accept me. Now at 30 years old, I am looking at the last 12 years and wondering if I should be changing my path again to a third option.
The expectations we have of people to stick to one thing from the time they graduate high school until they retire can be exhausting, and I hope anyone that can step away from such a soul-draining career eventually finds peace and subsistence. Not just for Matpat, but for all of us.

I spent the last 7 to 8 years working at an office job and now I'm in my early 30s. I quit. I had a lot of mental breakdowns in 2023. I got my parents to go back to (not married yet, I'm one of the privileged) and now looking to change my career path. Still looking. I can't do the high demanding office job anymore. I can't risk myself anymore for pay outs that idk if I can get. Believe me, my Boss asked me to think about it, to stay and continue the job but he doesn't promise me my promotion or salary increment at all. Just MORE work (disguised as an opportunity to learn). And I can't take it anymore. More work on top of a lot of work that I already have now. I just... can't. Now in the middle of the night, I feel so desperate and lonely. I don't have a job anymore. I have savings for like half a year and that's it. I'm actively looking for a less demanding job but even then the recruiters are skeptical about why the sudden change. At this point idk what to do anymore. I can't see a way out. So what you said there is very kind. Idc if I work as a non professional job as long as I'm happy and not stressed out. The focus right now is just me and my own health and family ofc. My parents are my everything right now being very supportive.
Haha..who knows, maybe I can do business where I can accompany lonely old people so they can be less lonely. Like talking to them in the evenings, take a walk with them and so on..

I once heard the average UA-camr career lasts 3-5 years. Most creators don’t make 1 year because they expect their channel to explode in a few weeks or months and be rolling in the money like they are the next Mr. beast, only to realize it’s no where near that easy. It takes a great deal of time and effort to become successful on YT. I have nothing but respect for anyone whose channel is successful and lasts even a few years. Even more respect to those whose career lasts even longer than 5 years.

I don't usually comment much but this video kind of hits home for me at least as someone who has their channel for more than 13 years and who was an early subscriber of Joey.
The thing with content creation is you always need an idea ready. Not just any idea, something that will make people watch, that is intriguing and interesting. Let's say the idea was made into a video and the video was a hit. The lifetime of said idea is very short. In a week or two, everyone would have moved on, watched something else or just got busy and forgot about it and this is where another idea must be in the making. It is a constant race with time and with how much can you get out of your creative juices which can feel like a chore in the long run especially if you have another job.
I know some younger audiences might feel heartbroken that their favorite youtuber retired, but the process isn't as glorified as the final results seems. Endless hours of editing, typing captions, actually planning the video (Light, location setup which can be strenuous to determine).
Also emptying schedules to film let's say during nighttime for a specific video, lacking sleep, ect.
Personally, I have a job where I research stuff related to science and make up new devices for phones and it is much easier than UA-cam.
Heck I have been on TV twice and it was easier because you only have to do your job and your job only.

I'm surprised more top UA-camrs don't do this. Walking away from the platform but leaving all of your content up doesn't have an immediate negative impact. My channel (despite being very small) was dormant for 2 years and my ad revenue dropped to about half of what it was. Theoretically, a big creator could just stop making videos and still earn a LOT of money for many years.
It's also easy enough to start making videos again in a few years. It's "retirement" with a good pension sort of option and the option to come back any time you like.

I feel like it makes sense we are starting to see a lot of creators moving on from the platform/creating content. Not just because things have changed so much on here (which has brought its own struggles with not getting videos demonetized, taken down or simply hidden from the algorithm). Or because they have decided there's simply other passions they are more interested in pursuing. But also, when it comes down to it, many of them have been doing this for 10+ years. I'm sure their lives have changed a lot since then. Many having moved, had kids or had other major life altering things happen. Things that may be making it harder to maintain that sort of schedule.. or even make them no longer want to because priorities have changed. Trends also seem to be moving more towards tiktok and short form content that not everyone is interested in doing. Whatever their reasons for doing so may be I wish them all the best in the future as they transition to other things. I'm sure leaving something you've been a part of for so long must be hard. Even if for the best overall.

Content creation, whether it's videos, art, music, podcasts, voice parodies, gaming, or just all of the above, should always be about you enjoying it first. The creator, that is. I feel like that's THE most important thing to keep in mind, that you like your content and what you're doing too. The audience will come, whether it's for you or for that specific type of content. Can't please everyone after all, and people have their own tastes. And yes, that also means that when and IF someone gets tired of it or just wants to do something else, branch out, or follow a different career for whatever reason they feel like, they're free to call it quits. It's sad for the fans, but it happens. Even celebrities retire someday. It's just how it is in the end, so yeah. I respect everyone's decisions and needs. Just the cycle of life in the end. And that's exactly why stuff like AI makes me mad. Especially the ones who say "with this you can keep your favorite celebrity making content FOREVER" that's just creepy to me. We have to let it go sometime, not keep copying and trying to be the exact copy of someone who came before us. Just kind of how it goes.

I think the best word to describe everything that's going on is "bittersweet." It pulls on your heart strings but it's ultimately a necessary step. These retired UA-camrs are moving on with their lives by their own choices and that's ok.
I was born in 2004 btw and I'm going into my fourth semester of college. Time flies huh?

I truly never noticed how much these content creators that I watched built up my personality and interests until.. they retired. They grew up and I grew up as well. And as I've changed interests or quit hobbies they did as well. They impacted me a lot and I'm forever grateful so I will always respect their decision and continue to grow, and move on.

I think your point about going away in your own terms vs. having the "curtains close on you" is so important. In that sense it feels like a good closure as a creator and for us as viewers, in my pov it feels nice to see that people are able to move on from something that they put a lot of passion and effort in, in the sense that it doesn't mean everything is over. It just means everyone has a chance to do new things and that while its hard, saying goodbye to a chapter in your life doesn't have to be something fully awful because there's people still supporting you no matter what. Its just how life is, and it makes me think that we really have the chance to always start new things no matter how much time passes 😊
(Also thanks for the jumpscare when i read the title lol)

The issue with Mattpat is that he was the entire reason people watched. Most of the episodes had him voiceover the videos and I feel like with him gone I would bet that the channel will get a fraction of the views and not be financially viable in a year or more with all the people involved in making the theories. If you make a business that relies on someone being the face of the brand (as with game theory,) If the face goes away then a good number of people will not want to watch future content without him. Kudos to whoever takes over the voice aspect of game theory but especially since he just sold the brand to another company I think they will pull the plug once the views drop off...

Maybe it won't be as successful compared to the Matpat era, but hopefully they can develop their own identity as a new host when they take over from MatPat. For me, I think Food Theory and Style Theory has the most promise in these areas as those don't really rely on something like "FNAF" or "Minecraft" or other indie horror stuff and they can branch out more into other topics compared to similar channels.

    • @EspeonMistress00

May be if you aren't regukar but Tom for GameTheory had appeared a lot on Shorts and also along with MatPat in GTLive.
So they will still have an audience.
Might have to start smaller tho.

MatPat has really made the creators on this platform ask themselves this question, and considering how UA-cam treats creators that aren’t Logan Paul or SSSSniperWolf, I can understand why.
As a someone who is outside looking in, I’ve seen since 2017 how UA-cam has been becoming more and more of a worse platform to be a content creator on. Copyright System abuse, excessive demonetization, strikes and claims that are given out of nowhere and usually without any context or explanation, an algorithm that is terrible at its job, and terms of service that are always changing at the drop of a hat, which sometimes feel counterintuitive and bipolar to the point where they no longer make sense.

      This…
UA-cam has turned into this massive sewer where all kind of manure arrives and become famous just by harassing and insulting for the sake of likes and because they’re bad people from the core… and every single attempt to stop them is tossed away because the only thing this platform wants is money, at the expense of strong rules protecting all.
