DRIVING TEST IN YOUR OWN CAR

- Using your own car for the driving test is ok, but there are rules to using your own car on the driving test.
The rules about using your car for the driving test in the United Kingdom are.
Your car must:
have no warning lights showing, for example, the airbag warning light
have no tyre damage and meet the legal tread depth on each tyre - you must not have a space-saver spare tyre
be roadworthy
be fitted with an extra interior rear-view mirror for the examiner
be fitted with a passenger seatbelt and a passenger head restraint for the examiner (slip-on types are not allowed)
be able to reach at least 62mph and have an mph speedometer
be fitted with L-plates (‘L’ or ‘D’ plates in Wales) on the front and rear
have 4 wheels and meet the maximum authorised mass (MAM) of no more than 3,500 kg
The MAM is the limit on how much the car can weigh when it’s loaded. It’ll be in the car’s handbook.
Tax and insurance
Your car must:
be taxed
have a current MOT (if it’s over 3 years old)
be insured for a driving test (check with your insurance company)
Cleaning your car
You should tidy your car before your test. This includes removing any rubbish or unnecessary items from the dashboard, footwells, door pockets, cup holders and seats.
Your car must be smoke-free - this means you cannot smoke in it just before or during the test.
Dashcams and other cameras
You can use a camera fitted for insurance purposes, as long as it:
faces outside of the car and does not film the inside
does not record audio from inside the car
Vehicle features
You can use a car with:
an electronic parking brake
hill-start assist
Manual and automatic cars
You can take the test in a:
manual car - these have 3 pedals
automatic or semi-automatic car - these have 2 pedals
If you take your test in a semi-automatic car you’ll only be able to drive automatic and semi-automatic cars once you’ve passed your test.
Hire cars
You can take your test in a hire car if it’s fitted with dual controls and meets all the other rules.
Cars you cannot use
Some cars cannot be used in the test because they do not give the examiner all-round vision.
You cannot use any of the following:
BMW Mini convertible
Ford KA convertible
Smart Fortwo (2-door)
Toyota iQ
VW Beetle convertible
There might be other cars that you cannot use. This is because not every model has been used in a test before, and some may not give the examiner all-round vision.
Check if your car can be used before booking a test
You can check if your car can be used by contacting the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).
Always check if you want to use a:
convertible car
panel van
coupe (a car with a fixed roof, two doors and a sloping rear)

Your driving test, first 5 minutes
ua-cam.com/video/rhkIgkR7cro/v-deo.html
I never would have thought of doing this, but I've heard numerous stories of money-hungry instructors who claim a student isn't ready to use their car, so said student ends up getting their own car and ended up passing. With how difficult it is to get a slot these days it almost seems necessary.
You will always hear about the odd bad instructor. But there are tens of thousands good instructors out there who have your best intentions.
But if you are ready and your instructor says you are ready but is not available, then use your car.
@@JamesTravis Yeah, I'm purely coming from the perspective of someone who has been learning a fair few years, has had a few instructors because lockdown meant my usual one wasn't available, doesn't own a car and whose theory test expires in a few months. Need to drive for work cause the buses are so often late, and I do sometimes feel I'm waiting forever.
This video came in handy as my lad took his test at Bletchley this morning in our own car, and passed! As a bonus we saw you doing a lesson nearby!
That’s great news. Congratulations to your son. It’s a small world
any tips, i have my test soon in bletchley

Another top video Travis. Always supplying us with the good stuff. Hope you’ve had a good start to the year 🍾
Thank you and safe driving
I passed first time in my own little car (which at the time was an 18yr old vauxhall corsa) I made sure it was spotless inside and out on the day & my driving instructor came along with me - but he had to drive me back home after the test, as I was only insured as a learner, but it only took about 10/15 minutes once home to change my policy 😊👍
Excellent, thanks for sharing.
Hi Travis, i really find your vidoes quiet informative and useful. I was wondering whether you could do a video on breakdown on a motorway in terms of what to do?
I will look into that. Thank you
you forgot passenger side internal mirror and L plates
I didn't mention L plates because everyone knows it is the law to display L plates on a learner car and an internal mirror is asked but will be provided if you have not got one. I do mention this In the description. Thank you for commenting
A little late, nice 2024 intro
The video we asked for and Travis delivered 😊
Good Luck everyone with your £63 spent for your uk driving test and hopefully we can all pass this.
Happy new year. ❤
Sounded very stressful 😅
So many things to avoid the problems faults in as you mentioned in this video. 😮
Hi,
Thank you for the explanation. I have a question about my windscreen. It has a straight crack, but it's not very long and is located on the passenger side, so it doesn't affect the passenger's view. Can I still use my car for the driving test?
Thank you.
I cannot give you a definite yes because you might drive over a pot hole as you are driving to the test centre and your windscreen cracks even more making it undriveable.
I would drive to the test centre and ask the examiner to give you their opinion.
I recently started lessons again with a new instructor and he was telling me i should be able to take my mini 2013 convertible - apparently Coventry Bayton road allow this? Do you have any experience with being allowed a convertible?
I am sure you are not allowed convertibles for the test.
You could phone up your test centre and ask them. They will be happy to confirm this.
@@JamesTravis do you know the bayton road test centre number by any chance? I can’t seem to find a valid number anywhere
Thank you sir for the info. Just a keep question please, I have a Renault capture and I intend to use it for my test, I don’t have an instructor in my current location, can I go to the test center alone with my provisional license and do the test? Or will the examiner ask for my instructor license? Thank you
You don’t need an instructor with you for the driving test if you are going in your car. But you will need a qualified driver in the passenger seat with you. That person needs to be 21 years old or older and have at least 3 years experience as a driver.
Hello James, just to add to his question. You mean I can’t drive to the test center alone? If I don’t have anyone available to go with me, what’s the alternative to use my car for the test? I have a test on the 17th of June and i intend using my car, i have Car Tax, MOT & Valid Insurance. Car is neat and fully functional. What’s the other option please for me without another passenger driver
@@lovedanievent4998 if you go in your car, you will need a qualified driver next to you in the passenger seat to make it legal. That passenger would have needed to have passed their driving test over 3 years ago.
So whoever sits with you when you practice in your car is probably the one who will be with you at test centre if you are using your car.
If you decide to hire a dual control car for test. Then Arnold Clark car hire is the company who you want to contact.
The only other option is to use a qualified driving instructor.
Hope that info helps
Oh yes this helped alot. Thanks will get a qualified driver to go with me 😊
Well what do you mean by driving tax insurance??? If your car is taxed, insured and mot, then what is driving insurance when you always drive it out and finally you taking it for driving test???
Some people who drive around are that busy they forget to renew their car insurance and road tax.
Happy new year 😊
Happy new year
What is the smallest car you can take on the test? If they are legal, how can they be banned on the driving test?
Cars that are banned are for reasons that make it hard for the examiner to conduct a fair test.
Such as soft top cars
Cars that cannot reach 70 mph
Cars that have large rear pillar to block obersvations
Happy new year all the best for 2024 hope you enjoyed Christmas
Happy new year
Happy New Year 🎉
Thank you.
Happy new year to you
Happy new year 🥳 🎉🎉
Thank you.
Happy New Year.
How would you even get there in your own car?
You would need a friend sat in the passenger seat to supervise you(the passenger must of passed the UK driving test for at least 3 years and is 21 years or above).
@@JamesTravis but if the person accompanying me has had their licence for only 2 years, are they OK to drive me to and from the test centre (me not being the driver at all, as they cannot supervise)?
