- You want to strip and remove paint from carbon fiber? I have some tips for you how to prepare carbon parts for painting and how to remove color from carbon. Please be careful when preparing carbon and don`t use any paint stripper on carbon fiber if you are not sure about the chemical reaction inbetween the resin and the paint stripper. I recommend sanding techniques to remove color from carbon fiber and show you how to do an effective sanding to prepare your carbon parts.

I would like to say to all out there. I have been doing this type of work for years. The hardest part is the sanding and believe you me that your fingers and your hands take a beating. My fingers lock up for two to three days after I sand down a bike frame or a car. So I ask of you out there never to take this type of work we do for granted. It is not easy and it is hard work. The reason I do it and I can guarantee you that this is why Martin does it to is because the passion we in doing it.
Most probably u have trigger fingers. Get it check. Some doctors can release it on sight. So u could resume your work lock & pain free.
Brent, is there a general way to know how deep to sand? As Martin mentioned there can be grey primer, white primer, and several other layers. How do I know I have gotten to the primer layer in general? I'm starting with helmets to get my feet wet.
Once you have sanded the frame, if I want to leave it bare Carbon, shall I put something to coat it, or can I leave it like that?
Brent, I love you video and will be a long time follower!
I appreciate your input and enjoy the humor... " hours later..."
Maybe it's best to just
Leave them like they are but I have seen removal set's for decals on carbon
Just completed my first frame. Found it easiest to dry sand first using 120 grit paper (wearing mask, ventilated room). Stop when you see spots of carbon and switch to wet sanding 400 grit. Continue until you see raw carbon everywhere. Then do the whole frame again first with 600 then 800 grit paper. Replace the paper often, it makes the job easier (but not easy…). I used between 1 and 2 meters of each grit paper. It all took roughly 6 hours of hard work as a beginner. Good luck! 👍
Don't care about sanding frames at all, I still watched it for pure entertainment! Thanks!
Your videos blow me away. Love everything about them - the humor, the great quality shooting and lighting and sound, and of course the knowledge you share. Maybe most of all, love that there are no shortcuts. Good work takes time. Just really grateful for the work you're doing, man. Thank you!
finally... someone showing how it's done. thank you so much.
I thought that sanding the frame could have weakened the structural strength of the carbon fiber but I think you clarified that. I heard you saying that sanding the paint would leave a grayish film. Sanding too deep into the carbon fiber would leave a black film. Thanks.
My man, I have been sanding down my Transition Patrol Carbon frame for the last 4 days with at least 10 hours in and I am ready to explode, Still have another 3 hours to go at my rate on just the frame. I haven't even started the rear triangle yet =(((((( godspeed and amazing work .
I'm following your guide, after 5 hours I'm only halfway through sanding the fork, but I'm looking forward to painting!
Welcome in reality.
Heading out into the garage now to start stripping paint from a 2018 Specialized Diverge frame. Gonna follow your advice on the 320-600-800 process to save time - THANKS!!! The fork alone took me 6 hours using 180-220-320-400-600.
Haha same here the primer underneath is wayyyy harder than what I anticipated
Great video! I have one question. Do you sand off all the paint with the toughest grit and then switch to finer grit to prepare the surface for the primer? Or when is the correct time to switch to a finer grit?
Thanks you for taking your time to show us how is done, I’d never have the courage to do this to my frames
deutsche gründlichkeit at its finest! :) thanks for the great content!
QUESTION: First,Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I may be repainting my SCOTT carbon bike soon. My question is, Why do you need to remove all the paint first. Can't you simply de-gloss the surface and/or remove the clearcoat, than primer and paint over the original? I did that with one of my aluminium bikes last month and it looks great and holding up so far. ???
Its all about weight 👀
When do u know u need to switch from 320 grit to 600, and 600 to 800?
I think you do the entire bike 3 times
Excellent video, many thanks.
It's likely I'll now go to my pro sprayer & ask what I can do to prep the frame rather than give them a half sanded frame !
I'm a builder by trade & feel sanding is well within my capabilities but it being the first time (on Carbon) I don't want to hash it up !
Great vid I'm gonna sand the paint of my old ribble carbon frame this week whilst on covid lockdown. Thanks to you
7:54 fold it in thirds so there are 3 sides to sand with. It grips better and all 3 sides can be rotated as required.
Hello Sir- a professional who is entertaining and funny as well! great videos. I wanted to ask about the dry sanding- you mention it, but when would you use it in this case? Thanks !!
Thank you for showing us how to remove paint in a rigorous way. It is very useful.
Good videos, slick and informative with a touch of humour. If I was prepping a plain white carbon frame would I need to rub back completely to raw carbon or could I just wet sand to dull the surface to create a key for the new paint?
i have an alu frame to sand, will remove all layers including the basecoat, i started with regular nonwet sandpaper to break the surface of the coat, and treat it with paintremover after..., to make sure all the paint comes off...., finish with fine wet sandpaper before i start applying the basecoat...., and after the basecoat it'll be wetsandpaper again, as after each next layer too except the final clearcoat....
Hey Martin,
A few follow up questions - can you discuss working around and preserving areas of the frame like serial numbers or shock mounts? I've been working on a project inspired by your work for a few months now and I'm taking my time and being very careful. What's your method for working on these areas?
Thanks!
Like Nike. Just do it!
Tip to help you strip bad rattle can paint from a motorcycle painter. Simply take a rag with some thinners on it and rub the part. Rattle can paint is 1k and melts like nail varnish so the fastest way to remove is simply to dissolve it. You won't harm the metal or carbon by using thinner. Then hand sand the factory paint job. Rattle can clear takes longer to remove than most can finishes where the colour has the gloss built in. Soak a rag in thinner, wrap it round the frame and leave it for a few minutes. It will wipe off after that👍
This was great thank you. I don’t know why you don’t have more subscribers! I think your channel is going to continue to grow.
A German with a sense of humour! 🤣🤣🤣 excellent video !!
Absolutely love your passion!!!!! OK!!! 😂😂😂💞👌👌👌👌
First I was like... Yeah, this will be good and I can do my frame. Then I was like... oh man, this looks like more work than I thought... finally I was like... there is no way in hell I would do this... Great video!
Found myself laughing, crying, and clapping at the end. Best content I have found on this, thank you! Just one question... How do you know when to switch from wet sanding to dry sanding?
When my fingerprints are gone it`s time to switch.
Vielen Dank, deine Videos sind sehr nützlich!!! Finde deine Arbeit sehr sehr cool!!! Weiter so!! Grüße aus NRW
Mines was painted road work orange. With a textured paint that chips off everywhere.
How do I know I’ve reached the carbon fibre from sanding? Should I be able to see the carbon fibre weaves?
most passionate video and the answer I most wanted! Thank you!
how's long does it take to sand it down completely?
seem so many of your videos, second favorite german person now.Michael Schumacher comes first
I have a unidirectional carbon frame with only satin clear coat on it, no color. Can I just strip the clear coat and re-coat it?
And who said Germans cant be funny. Love this video
i was wondering if you could explain how to paint those crazy colour changing effects love ur videos btw
In a future video coming soon.
Could I spray can paint a new color after removing the clear coat (like you did on the centurion frame) without stripping the whole carbon frame? And oh, your videos are AWESOME! Love your passion and enthusiasm!
You can do what ever you want with your frame.
Hola!!! Gracias por tus videos.
Una pregunta, ¿que decapante utilizas para remover la pintura? 🙏💕
Great video etoe just what I've been waiting on.About to start my own project what if I want to clear coat my raw carbon frame after sanding. I've heard some manufacturers use fillers around the BB area etc? Ps you do great work.
I use peanut butter and lemon juice and it works just fine........just keeding xD - I love your vids, man. Your paint jobs are always amazing. Thank you for taking the time to film these and also the pro tips and information.
Definitely a brief overview here. You need to swap out fresh sand paper of the same grit fairly often since the abrasive quality degrades as you use it. Also for wet sanding you need to rinse the sand paper often and wipe the frame down. The whole reason for wet sanding is that the water rinses the paint out of the sand paper. Otherwise the paint would build up on the sand paper making it smooth and useless. Dry sanding is for coarser grit sand paper like 120, 150 or 220 where the paint dust is less likely to stick to the sand paper. ETOE also does not get into when and why and for how long you need to sand with 600 and then 800. There is plenty of basic info on sanding for paint on the internet. Like i said, this is a brief overview. I just wanted to throw in a couple points.
Hi, ,I love your videos !!! Very very informative and practical for DIYs.
I have a matt black carbon frame I want to re-spray paint..maybe glossy.
Do I still need to sand down the frame ? And do I need to use primer for carbon frames?
Same question
It was a great video! Many thanks!
In the beginning you show the 3 grits of sandpaper you use, but will you use all three in separate passes on the frame? Or will you use one particular grit for the whole frame and then spray the primer?
sanding is hard and timeconsuming, but totally worth it when u see the result;) u dont want to skip or rush this folks;)
How much sandpaper sheet do you use usually for a frame?
There are sponge wet sanders , its good to use for this purpose ? And its that machine , a vibration container with sanding elements , it would work for removing paint ?
I love this guy!! He Cracks me up.....Very knowledgeable!!! :)
Cant decide if the comedy or the information is better 😅
Hi @ETEO ! Thanks for taking the time to show us your technique, it's really good to see someone that explains the dos and don'ts adding the whys. I was wondering if it would be a terrible idea to use a wire wheel on a drill for the top layer? And if yes, can you explain what the risk is with it? Thanks!
Thank you so much for making this video. Keep up the good work. Eager to see more of your work :)
man i would love to ship my frame to this guy... he definitely could export my idea to the bike... to bad its probably too expensive lol
I want to do this with some carbon fibre rims, preferably without having to dismantle the wheel. However some say thr painted graphics can be imbedded into the top layer of carbon itself so scared of rubbing it down and getting to the carbon before thr graphics are completely removed. Additionally what is the final coating used on carbon wheels usually and what is a safe paint to paint carbon with?
Is it possible just to remove varnish? And the revarnish it so to save decals? Mine frame varnish is now peeling off on several places.
Thank hell I only have to do seat stays and fork on mine, rest is paint stripper cos titanium.
haha, du bist sehr lustig. Ich lerne gerade Deutsch und deine videos macen mich wirklich aufgeregter uber die Duetschen.
Hi mr Etoe, i have a question, i am sanding an old alu frame and reaaaally hate stickers...., next thing will be getting me paint, and that why i am asking this..., how many spraycans would i need to paint the frame in 2 coats.....:), for the other colours a single can will be enough, but i just want to make sure i have enough cans to finish the basecoat basically...:) ty in advance, lov ur show and you been very helpful allready..., also, i just watched Elena's booth and bike, and it has a very pretty result:), and i like the fact you posted hers too....:)
Uses a color on the bike and what is the color name
is there a recommended way to mask off an area on a carbon frame; to sand and repaint a specific area?
Hi bro, love your content. I have a question. I have a metallic frame, do i still use the wet sanding paper or can i just use paint remover?
Hiya, Great vids! I'm thinking about a DIY paint job on a brand new carbon frame. The Frame comes matt black and I'm planning a black base coat for a Chroomacoat effect, do I need to completely remove the matt paint and prime, or will will lightly sanding the provide enough of a key for the base coat? Basically, how much sanding do I need to do? :)
Is this the same recommended method if I want to remove some paint decals on my bare carbon fiber frame? I.e. more specifically just removing maybe some logos or branding as i want the frame to look mostly black. it's a bare carbon frame with some decals in the downtube and chain stays. Tnx!
HI, should i rub it hard or need to rub softly ? If i go too hard will it spoil the carbon frame ?
When it comes to sanding I like to hie child labor. It's cheap and they get a sense of pride that they contributed to the finished work.
Could you use coarser sand paper to make the process quicker?
And please take care of yourself , to not poison yourself and make an allergy , you channel its so cool :)
A great instructor thank you sir
After I do the entire bike with 350grit do I do the entire bike in 600grit then do it again in 800grit? All wet!!
Fantastic video what are you thoughts on a spray stripper for aluminium and steel frames?
Ive seen a video from another youtuber called sickbiker on a cannondale that looked good apart from his lack of PPE i wondered what your thoughts are?
Any recommendations on removing decals from a carbon bike frame?
i am planning to DIY repait of my aluminum road bike. like bare aluminum.. like titanium frames...do you have any advice . pro tip please😁
Best tutorial ever!!!
I love this men 😂
The best work of pint, tanks master
the intro to this video is f***** hilarious
Why switch to the s raping blade from the sandpaper? Because the paint was peeling and not sanding clean?
Kids, don't put it in an oven, it was a joke, ok? lol
Great video man. Stupid question maybe but: Can I just paint over without sanding when I just want a dark color anyway? Wanna paint my originally Kawasaki green frame into black... (Stevens super prestige 2019)
I tried this on a broken carbon frame just to test it. I have a hard time telling what is primer and what is already carbon.
15:26 i thought he said "i like to use a paint stripper on psychopaths" hmmmm... Me too! 😆😆 by the way i loved all your videos im now sanding my bike frame properly thanks to you.
Merry Christmas Martin, good video, very funny :-)
Bei den decals ist also noch eine klarlack Schicht darunter und darüber? Kann man nach dem Abschleifen der decals noch den Klarlack polieren oder ist der dann komplett weg ?
Geniales Video. Danke für die Inspiration.
do you use epoxy primer and then acrylic paint?
Do you sand with 400 grid until all the primer is gone and then continue with 600 and 800 or do you remove the last bit of primer with the 800 to not sand too much carbon?
I use 800 grit. Spaghetti arms use 400 grit.
Awesome how you prepare all the frame even the areas around the bottle cage bolts, How did you do it? Amazing tips... I did one carbon frame using P400 for all the frame... it took me ages!
I did it by hand.
youtube should hire you to lead all youtube tutorials. everyone else sucks at it
Hi ETOE, what's the preferable way to remove paint from aluminum? In your experience is paint stripper hard on aluminum. Thank you!
My accent is much harder than any stripper can ever be. By the way, I`m not really interested in strippers. No front if you are a stripper. Do what ever makes you (or others) happy.
Martin, did you sand that Centurion including that shiny bkack color until it is all gray? Thanks. I have aframe with the carbon fibwr weaving showing in the finish. Thanks again.
Yes I did the complete frame.
Your Very Funny man Hahaha Absolutely love your Hardwork & passion!! Haha
Thanks for this. Great job man!
Glad you liked it!
Which kind of sandpaper do you use? Especially the material of the sandpaper would be good to know.
silicium carbite.
Danke für das geile Video. Was für ein cooler, lustiger Typ
That sanded red bike looked kinda sick
6:33 material required to sand down the frame including grids...
What if you leave the frame in a sand storm? There must be a faster way to remove paint .
Absolutely love ur videos! I just ordered a new Cannondale Topstone Carbon Ultegra RX2. I got a good price but it is butt ugly color so I want to repaint the brand new frame. Since it is brand new, do I need to take it all the way down to the carbon fiber? Or can I sand off the clearcoat and start from there? I think I want to do a white base coat with red lettering and accents much like you did the Canadian Flag Trek frame. Any advice will be much appreciated. Thank you again for the many awesome videos!!
If you are a lazy looser moron you don`t need to remove any paint and laquer from your brand new frame. If you are a pro you have to go to bare carbon. Please decide yourself what you are.
@@ETOE Down to Carbon it is! I will make a video of the entire process and try to earn the “two thumbs up” in all categories. Thanks again my man!
Danke!
