Hi
Yes, it changed immensely, things like: the White House saw the show and called me to play and emcee an event for the President, and many other things
Thanks
+David Tolley This is amazing, do you still play to this day? I'm glad you got this opportunity.
+UA-camr yes, I'm a music professor and I play a lot of events and concerts, but not as many as I used to, thanks
+David Tolley You are awesome! Wow!
Thanks
+David Tolley What an awesome performance David!
Hi, I'm glad you enjoyed it, Johnny was great! For the first show, nervous scale 1 to 10, when I look back at it, I would say a 1 or 2, it was like a dream that just happened so quick that I didn't have time to get nervous, honestly. Second show, I had a week for my brain to process playing for 28 million people, just me and a piano, it was at least a 9, and probably a 10, I was terrified at times, until I sat at the piano and started playing. All the best, David
"The Tinker" tragedy and triumph of John Bunyan. The musical needs to be composed!
....wonderful talent DT.....long time go by now....curious where you’re happening these days.....please advise
Beautiful piano playin'!
Awesome performance!!
Awesome technique AND skillful showmanship! Such a rare and delightful combination!
I love the Internet. The fact that the artist(!) is responding to comments this many years later is just awesome.
Well said man.
+Seth Goldberg Its easy to be jaded by a lot of the nonsense the internet perpetuates, but it has redeeming qualities. David Tolley throwing up charming responses to this video decades after it happened is amazing.
Hi Seth,
Thanks, I feel it's the least I can do since you all took the time to watch this old Carson clip, I'm glad you enjoyed it
All the best to you,
David
I'm still thinking this was very staged.
@@hopemccoy --Wow! You just can't believe anything can just happen, huh? How sad for you!
Hi
It really wasnt a setup, my brother and I were at the beach and sightseeing all day, and my brother really wanted to see the TONIGHT SHOW LIVE before he flew back to OHIO the next day. The fact that I wasnt nervous was because I had no idea 28 million people were watching that night, quite honestly it was like a dream, lol.
Thanks everyone for your wonderful comments, I'm glad you enjoyed the video, Johnny was so great to me!
Thanks, it was a lot of fun
Johnny was great
+David Tolley did you get laid after the show from an audience member
+aakksshhaayy Of course he did, what kind of stupid fucking question is that?
After the show my phone rang off the hook for a couple days, I even got some marriage proposals ?? bizarre?? lol, but I stayed in touch with Johnny indirectly through his staff, he was truly a very kind man to me. THanks for asking
David, we were seated next to the right of you in the audience that memorable night. My late friend Smittee was directly next to you, he was a contestant on 'Putting on the Hits' at the time...and later traveled with the Jump in the Saddle Band mimicking 'The Curly Shuffle'. I'm the guy with shades, and shortly after this did radio in your hometown of Columbus. I'll never forget how impressive you were that night, told the story dozens of times and forwarded this video as well
Larry Genta
Wow
Wonderful memories
Now, this. This is so awesome.
I'm trying
It's pretty exhausting after awhile
I feel it's the least I could do
You all took your time on a Friday night to watch a clip of mine
Thanks
In flipflops too! You're the man!
Respect.
Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
+David Tolley you're amazing! i'm really inspired to continue on my piano endeavors.
Great
I wish you all the best with your art
Take care
David
+David Tolley Are there any songs that sound similar to Memories? I love the happy, cheerful tone and rapid pace of that song. Your performance was amazing. I used to play the piano in elementary school. I was really good. I used to play at concerts, but I stopped in middle school after the pressure was overwhelming, and I've forgotten all of it. It's one of my biggest regrets in life. Seeing your performance gives me the spark to play again.
Who but Johnny would take a risk like this and have it come out so great?
sorry, I came straight from the beach, I didnt even know that my brother wanted to go to the show until midday of sight seeing, lol
Thank you David
Phenomenal! I loved that he dressed very very casual.
Thank you!
Watched several times, saved it . Marvelous.
I’m smiling. Its4am:) back to sleep.
Hello!! How are you doing today! Please pardon me for intruding into your privacy but I just wanted to know if you're a fan!.... Stay safe
Great playing David - and by the way you were totally ADORABLE!
As a drummer, I'll admit to, many times, having the dream of being at a concert of a major band, when they realize they have no drummer and call me from the audience.....You lived it back then, that had to feel incredible!
Hi
To be honest, it still seems like it was a dream, honestly
I remember going to the show from the beach, and sitting in the audience,
But after that, it's dreamlike
Keep on drumming
Best
David
I think that happened at a WHO concert - their drummer couldn't play, so they drafted a drummer from the audience.
Haven't heard anyone play like that since Liberace! I like how you throw back the tails on your tux!!
Hi Mary,
Glad you caught that,
Not everyone notices that,
I was such a ham,
Glad I don't realize I was playing for 28 million people that night, I probably would of fainted.
Take care,
David
Wow....how cool is this? Prime example of how a moment in time can change a person's life.....good job.....
+Judith Copeland
Thanks Judith
Yes, it changed pretty quick
But im pretty much the same guy I was before the show
Take care
david
Beautiful! David is such a talented, personable performer with impeccable piano technique! To play as he did before millions without rehearsal is amazing!
Moments like this were what made Johnny the king of television for all time!
Thank you, I’m glad I didn’t know 29 million people were watching that night, I would have been shaking in my sandals.
Never get tired of watching this and on how great of a pianist you are. God bless you and yours.
Thank you and God bless you also
100% honest, Johnny would of had to explain it to everyone when it was all over. He was too classy to not be honest - THE KING OF LATE NIGHT
Agree.
absolute king
Lol are you here from reddit too?
@@sarahm2137 yes, I am. 😄
Everytime I see this - it's not the beautiful and gifted playing that always impresses me but the amazing, sweet and funny personality ~ still makes me smile!
Awe thanks Shari
I agree with you Shari. And yes David, your attitude made it all the more pleasant to watch. To think that I just watched it this year and was only born after a decade of this performance is truly awesome. Great job! 😊
Love the way he pretends he has an evening jacket on as he sits down. Brilliant playing Sir!
Excellent!!!
I watched an interview you did where you explained how you treated the performance like you were playing for a few hundred people. I can only imagine how I would react knowing so many were watching...
How you got up on stage and sat down at the piano and made it seem like the millionth time you did that same routine!?!?! You didn't play the piano. It was a performance.... in flip flops no less!!
I will never tire of watching these!!
Hello!! How are you doing today! Please pardon me for intruding into your privacy but I just wanted to know if you're a fan!.... Stay safe
That was what was so magical about Johnny's shows. You never knew who Johnny would give the opportunity of you life to and he loved doing that. Wow David!
Hi David, I just heard "Cats" for the first time today, 9-25-2015. I wish I would have heard your performance many years earlier because it was my Dad's favorite Broadway song. He passed away 9-3-1996. I have an amazing son, Mark. He was born on 12-26-1989. He plays the piano, but I will not go out on the limb and say Mark plays as well as you do. Mark has an inborn gift. Just like you do. I am so HAPPY that you were in the right place at the right time. I am always hoping for the same moment for Mark....for God to open a door for my son. Bless you and Thank you for an enjoyable performance. L. M. O'Reilly
+Lesle Marie O'Reilly
God Bless you Lesle and all the best to your son Mark :-)
This was so awsome to watch. A complete natural with showmanship. Had the crowd eating out of his talented hands.
David, you were awesome!!!! Not only do you play fantastic but you added some humor - outstanding!
Wow, thanks for the great compliment, Im glad you enjoyed it. All the best :~)
Thanks for all the comments. I'm glad you enjoyed the video, it was a lot of fun, but to be honest, the 2nd time I was asked to be on, I was incredibly nervous and almost too nervous to go on. Johnny was the nicest man to me, both times, he was definitely THE KING OF LATE NIGHT TV.
As a European and someone who was too young to see Johnny. I only recently discovered his shows and what comes across is, with his natural laid back persona, he really put great emphasis on making his guests look great and brought out their best.
After watching this I am blown away such a thing occurred and how Johnny rolled with it and just let it happen.
What an amazing Story David, You absolutely nailed it! Not many with your talent could do that!
+Marc McComiskey
Thanks a lot Marc for your very kind words
Glad you enjoyed it
Take care

Wow, that's amazing! It must feel like a dream remembering this awesome moment in your life.
Just watched it just now on fb. Glad you are doing well Mr. Tolley. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy. You deserve this.
Thank you
I was gonna comment about how awesome that piano playing was, then realized I'm talking on the players own page. :)
That was seriously awesome, and very well played. I loved it!
+Brandon MacEachern
Thanks Brandon
+Brandon MacEachern haha that was my thought as well!
Thanks
Your showmanship was incredible!
Bravo!
Performing at a scheduled event is one thing. Performing impromptu in front of the world - You rocked it.
fpoasec thanks
Awesome.....with a capitol A......!!!!! (But we all know just how wonderful you are)
i'm just glad i have had the pleasure of working with such a genius.....many more blesses to come...!!!!!
That is quite possibly the best rendition of Memories I have ever heard. Well done!
Thank you

Wow what a phenomenal moment that must of been!
Thanks Lami
Yea it was great, but it actually seems like it was a dream.
Best,

For a man who's so talented and successful, you are also really humble and grateful to the ones who've helped you. I am sure you are the man with 10 talents in the bible, may God bless you more every day, Sir.
Wow, you blessed me with your comments, I wish I had 10 talents, to be really honest, I personally don't feel I have anything special talent wise, in high school and in college it seemed like I had to practice longer and harder than the normal student. God Bless you all the days of your live
David Tolley Thank you. There are many talents and gifts from God, some people might start with 2 or 3, but they love what they do so much and they work harder than anyone else, God give them 4 sometimes 10 times more than what they originally had(Of course there are this kind that start with 5 and end with 0 because they did nothing about it). ^^
You earned your talents Sir.
That's right man. I just got saved 3 weeks ago and He has changed my life. Its still difficult at times but now I have hope for my family and future
So neat. I just love stories like this.
Thanks
Johnny was great to me
Watching at 3:30 AM east coast US. Unhappy time in my life. I love the innocent and spontaneous feeling of this. Made me smile, thanks David

Hang in there, one day at a time, it will get better
All the best to you,
david
WOW. He did that on the spot without any sort of warm-up? Maybe he warmed up a bit during the commercial break, but even still. He didn't even look slightly nervous. Simply incredible.
This was awhile ago, I"m sure, but it still packs quite a punch! David, you were phenomenal, and funny to boot! Loved this video...oh so great. Merry Christmas 2015!
Thank you
So glad you enjoyed it
Merry Christmas Gayle

Does anyone know a similar story where The Who pulled a drummer out of the audience to finish a show? This was really great David! You rocked it!
Ya. It definitely happened at a show in Pittsburgh. I think there is a clip out there somewhere.
Thanks, I'm glad my mom kept encouraging me to keep at it even when I didnt want to :~)
Huge Carson fan since I was a kid and somehow had never heard of this moment until today. Crying laughing. You did such an amazing job! 🤣
That was amazing! Wow amazing timing! Great shoes LOL Miss Johnny Carson days!

hey David, are you Jewish by chance?

There is some Jewish blood way way back in my family tree
But I'm a Christian
Did you think that because my last musical was SONG OF SOLOMON

That was awesome! I wish we still had real talent like yours today instead of all the noise that's out there now. I've played for over 30 years and wouldn't trade it for anything! Wish I could hear you play in person.!
I loved watching Carson. Really neat to see this. Your performance was great. This must have really boosted your career.
Hi Yariv
That's pretty accurate
Thanks
You're charismatic as heck
Thanks Max
Thanks Max
I love how you are not nervous and play like a professional! What a great memory!
+Tami Rike
Thanks Tami
Actually on the first show I didnt have any time to get nervous, lol
But on the 2nd show when he had me back as the first guest, I was terrified
I watched that, too. You were great!
Thanks again
Where did he send you for dinner the first time? It's funny that you got almost $500 the second time.
Tony Roma's ribs in Beverly Hills
It has been said that new comedians and musicians that went on Carson had their lives changed immensely for the better (I.e. Drew Carey) for doing so. I hope things happened for you, too !
Thank you
Yes a lot of great things happened after the first and second show
Thanks, it was my younger brother's idea to go to the show!
I like the Liberace "over-the-shoulder" look :)
Hahaha
Glad you liked it, they didn't teach me that at college, lol
I had to learn that by playing a lot of piano bars
Take care,
David
Loved it!
Thank you
damn talented
Thanx
The cut to your sandals is pretty priceless, lovely performance.

I agree
Thats one of my favorite moments

David---were you nervous doing this? I mean, it must have suddenly dawned on you: "OMG! I'm playing in front of 15 million people!"
Hi David,
I just found an article about you in Taiwanese Facebook. Basically, the article said that "chance always gives to the person who is well prepared." From there, I found this video. Your first performance in Tonight's Show 30 years ago inspires me a lot. Thanks.
Thanks James
All the best to you,
David
hahaha and the little smug/self-assured comical head wiggle smile combo is perfect haha
Thanks, Johnny was the best!
I finally understand "The Shining" ..."Heeeeeeere's Johnny!" ...never got that...
Yep
That's where they got the phrase from
You didn't know that?
Just saw your clip on the Carson Show. You are simply AMAZING! What a great Talent Thank you SO much for sharing it!
Leno has always come off as synthetic. Carson was the real deal.
I stopped watching after Leno took over. It just wasn't the same show anymore, too rehearsed.
AWESOME!!! Just watched your second performance, too. Fantastic!
i wonder who was the lady seated next to Tolley on the stage.
If you watch other clips of this night, that lady was a piano teacher that also came from the audience to play. She was good, but Tolley blew her away with his playing. She was gracious and understood the talent that Tolley was...
Her name is Mary Jo Manella (sp?), originally from New York, but lived in Southern California at the time of this taping. Maybe she still does.
Wow, the guy has a lot of confidence and sooooo much passion for his music......delightful
Talent! How long had you been playing before then and how long now?
I forget when I actually started, I was 5, 6 or 7; and have been playing or writing music ever since.
Best,
David
This was amazing.
Thanks, it was amazing for me also, I dont even remember the show, lol
So David the big question is did that show really change your life even if just for a while ?
+arrgh garry diply.com/videosworthsharing/article/johnny-carson-david-tolley
Wonderful moment in your life brought to everyone via the internet. Everyone dreams of that moment and you nailed it. When i was young this song was a theme for one of the airline commercials and i always think of those whenever i hear it. Now i'll remember this instead :)
+bbryan36
Great
Im glad you'' remember this song like that
It was a lot of fun and like a dream

david
Were your hands shaking or was it just the camera ? I feel like you hit a few wrong notes (is that how you call them in english ?) but that's expected when you're playing on stage, in front of a live audience with no rehearsal beforehand so I would say you nailed it big time.
Cheers from France
+Mimosa E.
Thanks Mimosa
The 1rst show I wasnt nervous
The 2nd show I was terrified, so there are a couple "clunker" notes, lol
Take care
