    Just realised I didn’t actually post my finish time.. 🤦🏻‍♂️ it was 26:03. (That’s not 26 minutes.. it’s 26 HOURS!!!) 💤

      Hello Ben, if I'm correct you are using a Garmin watch? I have a Forerunner 935 and on one of my ultra's it lasted for 18 hours and 20 minutes in normal mode. In ultratrac mode it lasts at least 20 hours (don't know the maximum in ultratrac mode yet as I haven't done any longer races yet ;-) I was just wondering if those 26:03 were in normal mode or ultratrac mode, and did you recharge somewhere during the race or not?

    This is my favourite running video on the net at present, you could easily of edited the video to show the highs from the race and just show the positive bits, but love that you edited it to show the highs and the lows and especially the tears, you hit the nail on the head during the night when you said it’s not about winning or being competitive it’s to push yourself, life will knock you down, but it’s how you get back up, you drew on your dnf from 2016 and used it to inspire yourself to finish, just like your videos inspire others, including myself to push themselves, kudos to you Ben, another top video

    I walked the London to Brighton challenge a couple of weeks ago. It’s 106K and the effect on the body is huge, let alone a 100 mile. The feet and legs swell and stiffen up, and as for blisters and hot spots is more a matter of when rather than if, even in the best socks, shoes, powder and tape. The sleep deprivation is bad but not the worst thing, it does make time disappear at checkpoints though. Need to keep an eye on the watch.
    Seriously well done for finishing, most couldn’t. The time is almost irrelevant on such a big challenge, just making it past the post is a big enough win.

    Dude you are like me. Fit, strong, trained for years/months. My nutrition has also let me down every single time. Finished a 100 in 2016, but lots of puking along the way. 2017, 2018, 2019, fail. I've tried plain water, salt tablets and gels, I've tried tailwind (couldn't stomach it after 20k). I can't stand "fruity" flavoured drinks after a while. This year, well in a month from now, I'm going again. I'm using 32gi Race Pro, it is a chocolate flavoured drink. Contains very good carbs as well as lots of protein so its what they call "single feed" solution, no other foods required. Did all my training on it. And we all know chocolate milk (this is obviously water based), and it goes down very well. I will have that in one flask, clear water in another flask, and electrolyte gels every 1-2 hours. Also plan to snack at aid stations on anything that looks yummy. I will let you know how things went. You speak about heat... down here it gets 50+ degrees C.

    S caps (electrolytes) help me prevent nausea and I can thereby eat more. 2 per hour with fluid when it's hot. When appetite goes, Kendal Mint Cake has peppermint oil which helps the stomach. BTW, in your video some sections I could scarcely stay upright on in 2017, let alone move forward, looked dry as a bone. I suspect I'd choose decent footing in the heat :-)

      @BenParkes  6 років тому

      Thanks Geoff. I think a lot more trial and error is needed. It's hard as never really get any problems until 70-80k into a race and you can't really simulate that in training. Will look up the Roctane, as like their gels. Appreciate the suggestion, thank you!

    It may or may not work, but I completely cut out sweet stuff. Pretty much only eat potatoes, bananas, noodles. No Gels for me works well. A sandwich here and there. Both tailwind and water. This strategy has got me through 3x 100 mile races in down here in South Africa, which I know, you know, is pretty tough. Now I just need to sort out all the other things that go wrong. 🙂

    What a great and honest video!! Best thing about you, you still stay modest and are willing to help anybody. Congratulations on a massive achievement! I'm not an expert on race nutrition, but have you thought about fat adaptation for super long races like that?

    • @BenParkes
      @BenParkes  6 років тому +1

      I have done a lot of reading about fat adaptation, LCHF etc, but its hard on a vegetarian diet and almost impossible on a vegan one. Eating animals isn't possible for me, but if I wasn't fussed about that issue then I'd certainly give it a go, as there is a lot of evidence that it's very good in ultras. Thanks for your kind comments as always!

      Great video and congratulations Ben. My take on nutrition is to eat while you can. So the first part of the race should really be more about eatimg than running. To me you seemed too eat too little at the start.

      Hey! For runners knee I've found that stretching is best. This video is great in my opinion. Very basic, but top content. ua-cam.com/video/LDhKVtkfnsg/v-deo.html This may not be the answer you want, but I'd advice against counting calories. I personally find it a bit of a waste of time. Instead simply focus your time on getting in healthy, simple foods in, with a rough equal balance of carbs, protein and healthy fats. Eating food in it's simplest form, unprocessed.
      Of course life gets in the way and you can't do this 7 days a week. There are days when convenance food comes in, but try to get the diet right 5 days a week. A good diet and then the two sessions a week in the plan will really help accelerate your weight loss.
      All the best for your training and thank you for your support!!

      Hey Nik. Thank you for the suggestion with Spring. I have used them and got on well, but at the time it was a faff getting them imported. But now there are stockists in the UK it will be easier, so may well get some more in. I put the GPX file on my Garmin and follow it along. These events are really well marked, but I like it to count me down to the end. Glad you enjoyed it, good luck in your next race!

    Hi Ben
    Wanted to ask your advice, with 5 weeks out from NDW100 and a very solid training block up untill this point ,do you see any value of doing a 70km - 80km training run as a last big run and then begin a gradual taper?
    Thanks mate 👍🏻

    Great effort Ben. Is there like a certain gradient you start to walk instead of run? Thanks

    • @BenParkes
      @BenParkes  5 років тому +1

      Not really.. just when I'm feeling tired. A lot of people like to walk the hills in these longer races.. helps break up the relentless nature of it.

      Do you think the nausea could come from riding the blood sugar rollercoaster, with having those gels plus fruit in the early stages? Maybe trying more savoury food... I think Stephen Cousins (film my run) uses baby food pouches for ultra fuel.

    • @BenParkes
      @BenParkes  5 років тому

      Hey Sarah.. could well be. Going to be trying out some more savoury options on my test runs. Lots of successful trail running use baby food, so that will be on my list! Thanks for the advice!

    Hi Ben, I'm guessing you have sorted your nutrition by now as this is over a year old, but I was surprised you weren't eating more solids. I've very little experience compared to you (only 1 100k race: Oxfam Sydney) but as well as the Tailwind and water I was eating complex carbs at each checkpoint and eating candy while running. But I was also popping ibuprofen regularly because of joint pain so needed stuff in my stomach. Inspirational, as ever. Well done.
