You mentioned the tracker, I followed yourself, Chris and Dan, two fellow You Tubers, throughout the day. I commented on one of the other guys channels how strangely nerve wracking it was checking in on your progress. Got to say you looked pretty fresh at the finish 👏👏👏👍
That was great you ran NDW50! I have seen it as support crew first, aid station crew and then a runner twice, first 50 miler there. Love it and know most of the places you were showing on your run even after a few years away, how unique the sections are. The first half is so run friendly as i was told before i raced and it worked well going marathon pace there, then cope for the second hilly half. The tracker device is clever. Centurion are so well organised and friendly, trust them to get high tech to look after the runners and get immersive for supporters and crew. Would love to do another ultra with them again. Tried the grand slam one year and missed the medal by 12 miles for lack of energy and issues galore. Ultras are so chill but need to be disciplined too. What sort of pace strategy did you have planned before the race if you went out so hard? Mine was minimum 9 min miles when running to look after my knees and walk at a decent pace where necessary so my friend arrived on 9:54 as a first attempt. Was tough though and you ran solo, that is really impressive. Did you have any niggles or just general over enthusiasm energy issues during?
i had no pace strategy, just thought i would "run on feel" but then kept getting sucked in and ended up pushing myself and mentally just couldn't hold back, probably partly due to it being my first race for a while and just too excited haha! yes centurion are so fab, hope you get to run another one again soon!
@@SarahPlace nice one going on feel. You looked like you were still moving pretty well at the finish, did you sprint for the line? My favourite part is sprinting for the line. So nice seeing a friendly face at that point feeling some adrenaline and the finish line you have to walk around to get to. In Ironman races i feel how the legs are doing. Whether i am biking or running ask if i can do a marathon with what i have left? Go out conservative and build up when the end is in sight. So easy seeing other runners and try to cling on to their tails. The first NDW my friend was getting calf cramp so we walked more and it kept the energy in check. I made pace mistakes in everything after the first ultra. Had an injury and forgot myself so it was fast to start like normal, walking by mid point mostly and a mess by the end. Didnt mind too much besides being very late for my ride home, until final race where it was the toughest run i have ever done WW50 and quit at 38miles and i was the driver. So close. Just assume everyone overtaking is going too hard and you may catch them by the finish at your more careful pace. NDW50 is my favourite, SDW50 is deceptive, feels like it could be fast and doesnt give any rest. NDW you get views, challenges and some pleasant casual sections. Even the steps arent too bad if you are chilled but is it Reigate with the steep track? That was the nasty part for the first half being able to touch it standing up! The steps down to the field after Caterham i was really suffering, walked like a robot down them. The aid station locations are the best, they get such amazing views. One time they had ice cream and jelly at Caterham. When i was on the second aid station one year i did micro pizzas using cake tin sized pizza bases with 4 different toppings. Was so pleased when the boxes came back empty and people enjoyed them.
Great video as usual Sarah. I cant wait to see the marathon video, I've seen the one that Ben put out and it looked a stunning run, but the climbs looked horrific! Just a question on the map screen. So I'm guessing you choose to do the course downloaded on your Garmin but just leave one of the other data screens on and the watch lets you know the turnings and if you've gone off course etc? I never knew that saved the battery ? Great tip, Thanks
