This was the race that showed me how frighteningly good Frankel actually was on a racetrack. Canford Cliffs came into this race having won 5 straight G1 races, having shown quite a brilliant turn of foot in his own right in all of them. But his turn of foot on this day was made to look pedestrian by Frankel, like it was scarcely even enough to be a good tow into the race for him.

He broke Canford's heart there. It can't be easy to see the horse's arse going away like that but there really was nothing the others could do about it. Different league.

Best Miler Ever. Would have spanked the brilliant Black Caviar at any trip whatsoever, too. Canford was an incredible horse himself.. and Frankels form is getting boosted to this day, thanks to beasts like Cirrus.. who happened to beat the machine that is Treve.. Frankel deserves his rating as one of the best horses who ever lived.

What made this win so incredible was the class of Canford Cliffs. As I recall, he had just beaten the great Goldikova and to my mind, he was the best miler in the world. He was giving Frankel a bit of weight but off levels the result would have been unchanged. Absolutely incredible.

    • @b512121girl

Class of Canford Cliff. A good horse but got beat by Dick Turpin "that takes the shine off him a bit" and Goldikova who got beat by a length holding her walking stick. In my opinion Canford Cliffs best race was beating Rip Van Winkle.R.V.W got within a length or so of Sea The Stars in the Eclipse in 2009. I never thought C.C was the best miler at the time. The great mare was (she had a lb overweight as well in that race against C.C)
These comments don't take anything away from Frankel.

lester price So you want to judge CC by how far he got beat early in his 3yo career and cleverly forget the last time he and DT ran CC won by 6L.
Also by your logic RVW must be a dog as he got beat by Intense Focus (who never won a race afterwards) We can all find races where a horse hasn't run up to what they subsequently do, but you need to use a bit of COMMON SENSE when judging a horse's overall career..

@@b512121girl That would be Canford Cliffs who pulled hard in the 2,000 guineas and was still only ½L down on Dick Turpin and then won 5 Gr1s in a row, those being the Irish 2,000, SJP at Royal Ascot, the Sussex Stakes, the Lockinge and then the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot before being brushed aside by Frankel here.

yes treve class in the arc is really out of the stratosphere, I was impressed with her performance in the Vermeille, but I knew for a fact that if she remained at that level she wouldn't make a difference, I simply didn't imagine how much improvement she has in store.
Still 2-3 stages below Frankel but how she effortlessly cruised to the front makes me hope there's another level she can achieve and hopefully we'll be blessed with other amazing performances next year

Yep mate, me too. That was the time I started watching racing and the likes of Chief Singer, El Gran Señor, Dancing Brave, Oh So Sharp and Pebbles bring back great memories. Chief Singer was a brute, wasn't he? Black as the Ace of Spades and all muscle. In those days they all seemed more modest, except old Clive Brittain who always got carried away with his enthusiasm. I always remember how excited he was when Pebbles won the Breeders Cup turf. As you say, happy days.

I can beat that story Death. My wife works in Cambridge, 13 miles from where Frankel has been based. One of her work colleagues owns a horse (recreational, not a racehorse) but claims to love horses and be very well informed on all matters horse related. When my wife asked her 'did you see Frankel on Saturday?' The woman replied 'who is Frankel?' and had never heard of him. We're talking about one of the greatest horses of all time. Now that would be inconceivable that could happen in Australia.

Size doesn't always determine what a horse can carry - some can handle top weight and some can't, that's it. Mill Reef and Northern Dancer were small horses who carried some decent weights. Secretariat's daughter, Lady's Secret (The Iron Lady), was 153 cm and a mere 408 kg, but she carried up to 58 kg as a four-year-old, and was the first mare to win the G1 Whitney in almost 40 years. Dr. Fager absolutely ate up big weights, but others of his generous size didn't handle them as well.

My last opinion: is Frankel the best horse of all times? Yes, with no doubt, a miracle of power. It is right that 3 years horses receive weight by older horses? No, this is an absurd dogma of the past. Because aliimentation, training and genetic has developed and changed thousands years from the past world

You're right Tony but that is what is so encouraging about what Brendan's building there. We didn't play like we can & our star striker is still out of the side but we're top of the league & haven't conceded a goal. I reckon we're only 50% along where Brendan wants us to be & when we crack the top 4 it'll be even easier for him to make improvements & bring better players in. He has got them really tight as a unit and the camaraderie in the camp is top class. No way they were going to lose today.

Sprinter Sacre was awesome today. I see some people are saying it wasn't that impressive because Cue Card got relatively close. I take the view Cue Card ran a fantastic race and today's trip played right into his hands and still Sprinter tracked him and won with his head in his chest. Take out Cue Card and Sprinter routed Flemenstar and the rest by 23L and counting. Amazing to see this horse following on from what we had with Frankel on the flat.

So true.. there are classy , top class, great and exceptional horses. Frankel was beyond exceptional because his wins were so amazing everytime and never you felt that he's going to loose. One of the important factors for making a horse great is the form of adversaries and the accumulation of victories against top class horses. Todays win of Al Kazeem puts him in the top class category IMO but I think no one would dare to compare him with Frankel which was with 2 levels above top class category

I always knew Animal Kingdom was a champion, ever since he won the Kentucky Derby so impressively from the outside. Now he beat them in the DWC. His ears were pricked all through the stretch! Graham Motion has always referred to this horse as the best he's ever trained, and that belief has paid off big time. I said on here that AK was "overdue for a big win" - I hope someone took my advice! Good to have the DWC back in American hands.

Agree with that John. Brendan seems to be a good judge of a player, the likes of Coutinho & Mignolet look like great buys. Hopefully the new lads are of that quality. Fergie retiring has changed the whole feel of the Premier League - they'll never be as good under Moyes & it's up for grabs. Chelsea are probably favourites but they're more consistent than spectacular so they're not in a different league from us. The interesting thing for me about Federer is his devotion to his sport as compared to other geniuses. I have a theory that there are 2 types of sportsmen - 99.9% are good at what they do but have to work hard and follow all the rules. The others are geniuses eg O'Sullivan, McEnroe, George Best. They have instinctive brilliance, get easily bored and often go off the rails. It comes easy to them and they get easily bored. Federer is the exception, a total genius who has always respected the game.

Cont: In the US there are over 30 G1 races classified as "handicap races", where successful older horses have to carry larger weights. How many are there in the UK? On the flats, I only know of minor races for less valuable horses, so the big G1 winners hardly get to prove themselves under anything but WFA. I would like to know how many there are in Oz (besides MC) which would require Its A Dundeel to carry more than he's already carrying.

9/1 is good value mate. At the end of the day he has good form on Ascot and would have run a belter last season but for missing the start. The only blemish on that Ascot record is the Sprint on Champions day last October. But, he's in form at the minute, his Jockey is on fire too, he likes the course and he's a multiple G1 winner. 9/1 is great value IMO. With Deacon Blues, it would be entirely dependent on the odds. After a big lay off he'll probably need the run, if he comes back the same horse

Never saw him live, mate. Always admired him from afar. Before he came along the little Aussie grunter, Lleyton Hewitt, was top dog with his aggressive fist-pumping style. Then Federer took him apart so surgically and comprehensively time after time that Hewitt's game fell apart and he plummeted down the rankings. A new King and style of play had arrived. All the others who have followed, including the great Rafa and Novak, knew they had to aim at this new standard that King Federer had set.

I went out for dinner with some friends the other night - an Aussie couple who have been living in London for the past 5 years - and I asked them if they'd heard of a horse called Frankel. To my amazement, they said, "no". Granted they're not racing fans (at all) but there'd be very few Aussies or long-term visitors in Oz that wouldn't have heard of BC. My point being that it highlights the 'reach' of racing generally in this country as opposed to the UK. Arsenal used a good term - mainstream.

I've read that Timeform Australia office wanted to give Frankel 148 so clearly only the non-racing fans of BC are so biased against him because those knowledgeable knew what Frankel was all about. Well like said even bad press is good press but no one has nothing to gain from here, its just facts that Frankel achieved and we're only looking at them, others from a professional perspective and for myself no more than a magical experience which I was lucky enough to live when it happened!

I was pretty impressed with Reliable Man first up. 1500m far short of his best, and on heavy ground which probably suited him more than it did Pierro he was within 2 lengths. Not bad at all. Manighar looks to be back on track, so hopefully they run up into the 125 sort of region and we can see what It's A dundeel

john I don't think you got the example I gave.. SL simply didn't had luck in running due to another horse positioning but that other horse EK had no contact with SL hence the stewards couldn't alter the placings. Trust me if there had been even a slight contact between horses the decision could've been different.
You can see Buick did everything possible with his right hand and the whip but he still couldn't keep her straight so the stewards applied the rules and gave him a ban.

I'm not sure how many people know, but Canford actually suffered a near-fore pastern injury in this very race, which explains why he drifted left-handed pretty badly. I doubt anyone thinks that Canford could ever have beaten Frankel, but this performance was definitely far from the best he had to offer. I think rather than being smashed 5 lengths, a prime Canford would have bridged the gap to about 2 lengths. He was Richard Hannons best ever horse. And I think at this time during 2011, he was more like 4lb inferior to Frankel, rather than the 10lb pounding he took here.

CC did drift left before when beaten, thing is,Frankel "drew" the sting and finishing speed from CC,although CC was a great great horse,i think Frankel was about 7lb better.

I agree with your comments Lee SOG but it just throws more variables into the mix about how good Frankel really was.
If your comments are correct then Frankel would be about 136 rated horse.

Yep plenty of quality around and I'm big on Voltigeur stakes also, can't wait to see Telescope running. I've done a win only treble on Telescope, Al Kaz and Riposte :-) should be fun :D The trickiest is Telescope as its unproven for the distance but its by galileo so should be fine, second tricky is Al kaz which has new competition in Toronado and who knows what comes out of it, and RIposte should take all the beating imo

arsenal to give a high profile example as this happens almost any day, would you give camelot the 2012 st leger because his path was blocked by Encke and when finally managed to get out he couldn't catch Encke ? Its exactly the same situation, a horse being forced by another one to go away of the ideal path and someone saying that the stewards should count the number of lengths that Encke cost Camelot for letting him in that pocket for so long. So would you reverse the placing and award Camelot?

John, I reckon Suarez at 11/4 to be top Prem scorer is a cracking bet. Several reasons - despite his banned start to the season he has almost caught everybody up already - he was head to head with RVP all last season until he got banned near the end - RVP had an injury free season last year which is unusual in his injury prone career - Sturridge seems more than happy to lay the ball across the 6yd box to Suarez for tap ins when other strikers would shoot. I think he's a great price at 11/4 mate.

As a racing fan, there are two things I've instructed my wife not to let me die until I've done. Both occur in France, as it turns out. 1) Go and watch an Arc. 2) Watch the morning gallops at Chantilly. What else needs to go on the Bucket List? Of course there are other family-related things, but they're all well down the list! ;)

Eagle, does Hamilton have more or less points than Rosberg? Does Button have more or less points than Perez? In qualifying Hamilton and Rosberg are 3-3. I would hardly call this 'getting owned', you only need to look at Webber over the last four years to see what that is. Also please provide me with the date that Aus beat England in the world cup.

Novelist for the King George. The three year olds aren't up to it this year and there's ground and form worries for Cirrus Des Aigles. Ekitihaam has not only been abandoned by Hanagan but won't get his own way up front and you have to wonder what effect his tumble in the Hardwicke has left. Others don't seem good enough. So it's the German horse for me. Very good form and proven at the distance and at the top level.

Hit the nail on the head there too - it's at the mile that the imbalance between Hcp & WFA is at it's most absurd. There are 15 G1 races at that distance. The 5 handicaps (Toorak Hcp, Emirates Stks, Doncaster Hcp, Epsom Hcp, Railway Stks) are among our "big" G1s (less so the Railway). Of the 10 remaining 1600m G1s, 8 of them are age or sex restricted and the only 2 Open WFAs are the George Main and Chipping Norton (hardly 'premier' races). For BC to step up to a mile at WFA, what was suitable??

Moonlight Cloud (most likely campaigned at a mile instead), Lucky Nine (no idea) and Sham Express (KS). That leaves Society Rock, Deacon Blues, Mental, Lucky Nine, Krypton Factor, Gordon Lord Byron and Tickled Pink. Society Rock loves Ascot, is going well obviously, is safe on varying ground conditions, what do we think ? 9/1 seems enormous, I'm just worried about Deacon Blues....?

I personally think Toronado is the real deal. His Timeform form figure is now apparently 124, 3 lbs higher than Camelot this time last year (121). However, Dawn Approach is rated 126. However, his speed figure is higher than Dawn Approach and he looked to have a load in hand when he achieved his figure. His last 3 furlongs in the Craven were run in a touch above 33 seconds. Which was over a second faster than any of the other winners during the day, even the 5 furlong winners.

Just been through the form again mate and she still stands out to me,she's broke well both times this season got plenty of early tactical pace and even first time out in the 1000 guineas would have won if Spencer had produced her later,my main concern is the pace angle,I remember last year St James Palace Stakes when Most Improved of Meehan's won with a large number of unlucky horses with a packed field with plenty of no hoper's getting in the way of the class runners and just hope it

I would also take a good look at any horse who ran at Ascot today who turns up in next weeks Stewards Cup. A lot of horses who ran like they'll be spot on for the Goodwood in 7 days time none other than old Hawkeyethenoo who looked magnificent in the parade ring. Novellist was my only winner at the course on a day where winners proved very hard to find. How did that 25/1 shot win the first is beyond me.

Arsenal mate, I can't remember the name of the horse but back in 2001 this happened to me: I had a highly speculative tenner double on a horse running that day at 8/1 plus Goran Ivanisevic to win Wimbledon (after he'd won his 2nd Rd match) at 33/1. My horse passed the post 1st but drifted half the width of the track taking the 2nd horse with him, winning by a neck. My horse was disqualified and Ivanisevic went on to win Wimbledon. That cost me over 3 grand & the result was overturned on appeal.

I've had a 100 on him to place at $3.30 for the moment which I think is pretty good value considering he's a near certainty to take his place. I'll wait for the news on Reckless Abandon and if they point him to the KS I might have another 100 to win. Animal Kingdom vs Farhh should be a ripper what do you reckon?

Really looking forward to seeing what this classic generation and the foreign horses coming over can do over the course of the season as these look as promising as I can remember in terms of depth in class. As for the jumps and SS, big margins are more common but only because all the best horses over jumps only really seem to come together at Cheltenham, at Cheltenham it's far less common as (cont)
