We have a new form of boons/improvements for use in D&D 5e campaigns thanks to the Draconic Gifts in Fizban's Treasury of Dragons. While the way in which you gain the gifts is a little bit varied I think the concept is pretty cool. I just wish we had more options and this was expanded to cover other creature types. What do you think?
    Thanks for watching!

Congrats on 85K, Ted. You bring us so much good content, in spite of having another job to keep up with. It’s nice to see so many people appreciate that. I’ve been playing the game since 1977. But, I still find your knowledge and insights useful for my campaigns. I’m sure newer players feel much the same. 🤠👍

It makes absolute sense that "Scaled Toughness" gives resistance to only slashing and piercing damage. It hardens your skin, Siegfried style.
To cite Sigyn from Mara und der Feuerbringer "the skin may be invulnerable, but now we'll see about the heros bones".
Your skin hardens, like it becomes sturdy leather, making it hard to cut and pierce, but no matter how thick your skin is, you can still inflict blunt trauma on the bones and organs beneath.

Ancient/Great Wyrm dragons do carry a lot of magical energy. It is mentioned that killing them can grant you a piece of a divine spark. So this idea of them granting you power after death does make sense

  • @evilsquirrel0573
    @evilsquirrel0573 2 роки тому +25

The redistribution of power is actually how I always liked to think of gaining exp. every single creature in the world has a bit of magical power and life force, and by killing them your group gains that power. That’s why you can grow more resilient from one day to the next, or how your wizard suddenly has deeper magical reserves. It obviously doesn’t make narrative sense in every situation, but it’s how I liked to think about it

Fiendish/Demonic gifts would be a wonderful addition and are very easily tied into the theme of Devils making deals or taking prizes from killing demons. A lot of these could just be reskinned and YES, as other people said, these should all also be warlock invocations for the different pacts

As a comment on the gift that changes your race to one of the Dragonborns in Fizban’s, in the game that my DM runs, all existing Dragonborn were automatically upgraded to their counterparts in Fizban’s when a (homebrew) draconic god, with power to rival Io’s, was awakened with the use of an artifact

They could have Eldritch Brands for killing an Elder Brain or a Beholder, and maybe both Draconic and Eldritch for killing an Illithid Dragon.
Also, Celestial Gifts for helping a high ranking celestial being, Divine Blessings for earning a God's favor, and Fiendish Mark for killing an Archdevil or Archdemon.
Maybe even Stigmas of Order and of Chaos for killing or earning the favor of powerful beings in or from Mechanus and Limbo.

Take a look in the DMG Supernatural Gifts.
they are NOT for just high lvl play, it is the Epic Boons that is for lvl 20 play.
Supernatural gifts is just like we have here but described as gifts from Fay, Fiends, Dragons or other powerful being giving buffs to the players.
they are split into two Blessings, that work just like we see here with the Draconic Gifts, and Charms that is lesser gifts that work a certain nr of times or a limited time.
this is often forgotten as it is something that the DM have to do and set up.
just like the Training of skills and feat is also often forgotten, and this can be given as gifts for a quest.

I'd probably take the Draconic rebirth gift, and if the players won the favor of a dragon, I would note it down (keeping it a secret from the player: they know something happened, but are not too sure yet)
And when they die (fail all death saves) I would describe a bright flash, and in their place is an egg: I'd go into a narrative of what they would be expierencing. Maybe have a 1D4 day waiting period, and an easy to pass str check.
And have them then be reborn as a Dragonborn.
Alternativley, if they encure the wrath of an unforgiving dragon the could be done more as a curse, with a kobold.

As to gaining resistance to piercing and slashing but not bludgeoning damage: It did say that the skin becomes tough (not hard), not anything below it and for piercing/slashing to work you need to break trough the skin, while a bludgeoning weapon doesn't need to do that, the impact can be carried to your inside no problem.

You know, that could be a really cool campaign idea. What if there was a dragon who's going around killing the other ones just to absorb their power almost like Highlander. Or there was an evil wizard or other entity that created a magical item that absorbed this power and they were killing off the dragons. Could be a fun campaign.

I’m not sure Klauth’s echoes would necessarily be that angry about you killing him, given that the book describes Ashardalon as having consumed-implying a lack of willingness from the other parties-his echoes to become a greatwyrm. If a dragon can force its echoes to merge with it, with its consciousness seemingly still dominant over the others, then having a particularly powerful echo wiped out might not be such a bad thing in terms of the rest of the echoes’ self preservation .

Heres my thing in response to your “still calling feats optional.” They are and should be optional. Feats add a LOT to a game, and by keeping them optional it does a lot. 1 it gives newer dms 1 less thing to stress heavily about. Not knowing exact feats for players and how to handle them can be very stress relieving. 2 i personally am strict on homebrew, when i introduce a lot at once i ban feats and multiclassing to see how a class handles alone. Classes can and shouldnt balance around feats but the other way around bc they are and should remain thay. Optional. Even if 99% of players always use them, its still 1 less argument a dm can avoid if for some reason they NEED to take them out.

Yeah, to me it feels more like a backstory than something you would give a player in an actual game. Like, maybe dragonborn aren't a race in your world but this character killed a wyrmling in their backstory and their body was transformed.
As a thing to happen in-game, the only actual gain is two proficiencies which.... I guess for an uncommon gift seems okay. But changing your race is a weird deal.

If your race has extra movement, or an ability that favors an integral part of his role in the party, such as appraisal for a dwarf, or stealth for a wood elf, or even prestidigitation for a high elf, you're losing more than you're gaining.
