Spaceman is a 2024 American science fiction drama film directed by Johan Renck and written by Colby Day. It is based on the 2017 novel Spaceman of Bohemia by Jaroslav Kalfař. Starring Adam Sandler, Carey Mulligan, Kunal Nayyar, Isabella Rossellini, and Paul Dano, it follows an astronaut sent on a mission to the edge of the solar system who encounters a creature that helps him put his earthly problems back together.
Spaceman premiered at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival on February 21, 2024, and received a limited theatrical release on February 23, 2024 before its streaming debut by Netflix on March 1, 2024.
Plot
Czech astronaut Jakub Procházka is 6 months into a space mission to investigate a mysterious cloud of dust and particles, called Chopra, lying beyond Jupiter. The Czech mission has arrived shortly before the South Korean astronauts to the post, being the first to launch to explore Chopra. Jakub struggles with loneliness and misses his wife, Lenka, who has recently stopped talking with him after he left her and their unborn daughter behind to go on the mission.
Lenka sends him a message telling him that she wants to leave him, but Commissioner Tuma, Jakub's commanding officer, prevents it from reaching him, to prevent Jakub's mental state from worsening. Days later, still without news from Lenka, Jakub finds a spider-like creature with telepathic abilities inside a compartment of the ship. The creature, whom Jakub names Hanuš[a], wishes to understand humans better and to help Jakub with his loneliness.
Exploring his memories, Hanuš learns more about Jakub: his father was an informant of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia and was killed when Jakub was young. He met Lenka, but often neglected her, being more focused on his career as a cosmonaut, going as far as leaving her when she suffered a miscarriage. Hanuš, disillusioned with what he has seen, leaves the ship, leaving Jakub distressed.
Jakub arranges with technician and good friend of his, Peter, to get him to deliver a message to Lenka, asking for forgiveness for his neglect. Hanuš returns after this, revealing that he's dying due to a parasitic infection that wiped out his entire species.
The two finally arrive at the Chopra cloud, which is revealed to be a leftover of the beginning of the universe and where every moment of time exists simultaneously. Hanuš leaves to die in space, but Jakub goes after him. Within the cloud, Jakub comes to the conclusion that he only wishes to be with his wife. Hanuš passes away due to the infection.
Jakub is picked up by a South Korean space vessel. Jakub and Lenka talk again, coming to terms with their relationship.

Production
In October 2020, Netflix announced that the novel Spaceman of Bohemia would be adapted by screenwriter Colby Day into a feature film of the same name directed by Johan Renck and starring Adam Sandler.[3] In April 2021, Carey Mulligan was added to the cast, and the film was retitled Spaceman.[4] On April 19, 2021 it was announced that Paul Dano and Kunal Nayyar joined the cast.[5]
Principal photography began in April 19, 2021, in New York City, and wrapped on July 1, 2021, in the Czech Republic.[6][7] In the Czech Republic, filming took place in Prague and surrounding areas of the country's Central Bohemian Region.[8]
Max Richter composed the soundtrack. On February 22, 2024, a track Don’t Go Away, a collaboration between Richter and the American band Sparks, which features in the film was released to streaming services.[9]
Release
Spaceman had its world premiere at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival in the Berlinale Special section on February 20, 2024.[10]
The film was released on March 1, 2024,[11] its originally planned release date in 2023 being delayed due to the impact of the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.[12]
Reception
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 51% of 112 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 5.7/10. The website's consensus reads: "Spaceman's poignant themes are partly brought to life by sensitive performances from a talented cast, but it fails to consistently engage with its most interesting ideas."[13] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 56 out of 100, based on 34 critics, indicating "mixed or average" reviews.[14]

This movie was a rollercoaster of emotions. A touching story of isolation, loneliness, yearning, regret, fear and sorrow... It's amazing how it made me a shed a tear over an alien spider. Just beautiful, some of Sandler's finest work and Max Richter's score is simply hauntingly breathtaking

Also the animation of when he died was done just perfectly and as well bugs or whatever they were started coming out of him and just kind of drifted off

Hanus is one of the greatest sci-fi characters ever created, and I'll never not cry at his death. He wasn't just an explorer and scientist of his species, but a kind soul who just wanted to help. Seriously, just a massive gut punch every time.

I can barely watch a spider, even a tiniest one can creep me out, but I really felt bad when I saw this scene. Hanus will be missed
He is so cute. I've never understood the fear of spiders. Fear of snakes I understand. To me spiders and butterflies are beautiful. Worms, caterpillars and crawling things disgust me. Only fear I have is of snakes or maybe big ambush reptiles like crocodiles.
This movie made me have a different perspective on spiders. That they can be gentle creatures and most don’t mean harm to us.
Of course, those with long legs that live in the corners of our houses, they can even kill small scorpions and bigger spiders, amazing natural pest control

@@amosdraak3536 In that movie humans send rockets to destroy a meteor, it succeed but all the chemicals fell on earth, insects, frogs, reptiles, crustaceans, and some others started mutating and eating humanity. So they had to go hide underground because of the new food chain
When Jakub first had the nightmare of a spider under his skin, that was Hanus probing/linking with him, and showed a small example of what Hanus was going through

I rescued a wolf spider a few years ago. Normally I was terrified of all spiders and honestly would smash them and freak out when I’d see one and one day I saw a spider scurrying which caused me to freak out and get a shoe. When I was gonna kill it I noticed that she was missing 3 legs and was struggling to escape from me. Something about that moment caused my fear to immediately turn to pity and I couldn’t bring myself to kill her. I had an old fish tank that I built up for her with places to hide and roam. Her legs grew back and here I was going out and buying feeder works for a spider. They only live a few years and she has since passed away but because of her I’m no longer afraid of spiders and I even let her crawl on my arm and she did not bite me. Spiders are very awesome creatures and very misunderstood, I even gave her a name, Yenn.

I used to cry sometimes during my childhood.
After I grew up, I never cried, only once.
Now, after watching this movie for the first time, I was moved effect and on the verge of crying. I was not strong enough to hold it back, and my tears suddenly came out.😢😭
