4:36 Willy wonka was literally meant to be a critique of Milton Hershey (and just monopolies in general)… I grew up like an hour and a half away from the Hershey factory (which is close by America standards) and Hershey took over the entire town. Deadass the town is now named Hershey. There’s a whole chocolate themed amusement park and everything.
Milton Hershey was also the first major guy in the chocolate industry who used slave labor in other countries to farm coco beans.. so that’s what the Oompa Loompas are based on.
Now whenever you go to chocolate world in Hershey park there’s tons of signs that basically say “we’re sorry about the slaves” even tho they still use slave labor to this day.
Edit: idk if this is really relevant; but my mom applied to work at the Hershey factory in like 2010 since they paid $15 per hour (more than her job as a substitute teacher) but ultimately decided not to take the job…. I guess my point is that I know a lot about the history of Hershey and it’s extremely fucked.

About the Hershey’s tangent- we do that a lot in the us, here’s a small list of things we’ve done to maintain monopolies:
- 25% tariff on all imported light trucks tracing back to a retaliatory bill produced because European countries put a tariff on American chickens since we were killing the European domestic market. We also tariffed some other stuff like brandy and some grains, but those were lifted when the Europeans lifted their tariff on chickens, yet the light truck tariff remained. Coincidentally Toyota was selling a lot of trucks and Volkswagen was selling a lot of their type 2 bus (vans count as light trucks by weight, height, and size regulations)
- an outright ban on foreign motorcycles above 1,600cc because Harley Davidson wouldn’t stop shitting their pants that Honda was outselling them in the 1960’s, primarily because younger people wanted to distance themselves from the violent chopper gangs (at the time the gangs were WW2 vets who rode them in the war, that’s neither here nor there just a tidbit) Harleys were and still are associated with in the US.
- US crash safety standards are the highest in the world, not because we drive the fastest on our roads, not because we care about our people (we were the last country to produce a car with pop-up headlights, even after the world decided they were too dangerous for pedestrians) but because our automakers know they would be hopelessly outmatched by foreign competitors.
- a suspected motive for the TikTok hearings in the US is insulating American social media companies like Meta from outside competition, like TikTok/Bytedance.
I know for a fact there are other examples, but vehicles are mostly my thing so those are the things I remember off the top of my head, outside of recent events like the TikTok thing.

- The monopoly board game which patent was bought by Parker for $500. And sued Ralp Anspach for making the game _Anti-Monopoly_ and after some court sessions Parker has effectively trademarked _monopoly_ holding a monopoly on all (board)games containing the word "monopoly".

It's interesting because Dishonored was stylistically inspired to a degree by the original Thief trilogy, and then the Thief 2014 reboot was ironically heavily inspired by Dishonored, which came out roughly 2 years prior. T2014 is just... okay. Not very interesting and very sanitised (by which I mean a lot of the depth is gone, makes the game feel more surface-level) compared to the original games. Dishonored is peak and will never age at all despite being unable to run higher than 60FPS without breaking
