"Sun bright, eyes hurt, look away I must, keep looking I will"
That's the thing, it doesn't hurt when looking at an eclipse, however, it still damages your eyes as much as raw dogging the full sun.

As much as I hate missing the eclipse, knowing my dumbass, I'd probably take a look at it like a deer looking at an oncoming car.
@SwaggyG_2102 you would've been alright as long as you looked at it while it was total eclipse, the corona is only about as bright as a full moon
my family wants to act like i missed a super important event for the world or something, they better be glad i wasn’t there so i could immediately blind myself 😂

who cares its boring asf why would you hate to miss it
I love the fact that there is a Simpsons episode where Marge decides to look at the sun during an eclipse and ends up going blind because she thinks it wouldn't hurt to look just a little.
Donald Trump looked at the sun during the 2017 eclipse. There's video of it 😂
Jokes aside I looked at it a bunch with my bare eyes at different states including totality, and nothing really happened. It's alright as long as you don't STARE.
This is episode is why I didn’t trust those cardboard glasses, my dumbass thought we needed a big box to look
Ayyyy, Takodachi profile pic.
@@crazyeddy98 If you stare at the sun long enought it leaves an imprint in your vision, that's when you stop looking at the sun
this is like the most accurate definition of natural selection. this would be like talking to a group of people who cant swim, telling them not to go into the water because they will drown, and still seeing them slowly walk into the water one by one. it’s crazy how after telling people to not do something because it keeps them alive/healthy and so many ignore if for literally no reason
the location of the eclipse kinda makes you think this would happen
people with irreparable eye damage can have children, and those children will not be genetically impacted by their parent's eye damage
i mean people being affected because they wore the glasses that got recalled didn't necessarily do anything wrong
but some folks did purchase eclipse glasses and they're supposed to work. can't blame them for getting scammed
@@tardybloomer i’m not talking about them. if you read my comment i never mention the people with the phony glasses just the people who look directly into the sun with no protection even tho they’re told not to
Being real, eclipses are this feeling of being in a completely different world. The wind picks up, and then everything stops. The entire world feels like it's not moving, like time froze. And then it keeps going. I genuinely recommend everyone see it at some point
It also gets cold
I saw one when I was a kid. Everything goes quiet. There was no wind, no birds chirping. It lasted for about 30 seconds and then the world was back to normal. Not something I will ever forget
I was in the path of the total eclipse; it was crazy. A friend of mine had a hummerbird try and nest on his head.
I saw the eclipse this year in Cape Girardeau Missouri, the totality lasted for over 4 minutes and it was pretty insane. The crickets actually started chirping and birds started chirping like it was sunrise. The temperature dropped a good 10° and it had already dropped 5 degrees in the 10 minutes or so leading up to totality
I was in the path of totality. Every animal in the radius went crazy, mostly dogs and mourning doves because 3 mins of darkness messed up their schedule. Seeing the sky go slowly dark and more people come out and animals go crazy feels like a movie.

Wouldn’t a welding helmet be even safer?
@@adrastos9464 yes
@@adrastos9464 by far. they are meant to look at an arc far times stronger than the sun for extended periods of time. people say that its the UV that gets through, but that's obviously a stupid comment since UV is given off from the arc generated by welding, hence why you can actually get sunburned if you stand near someone welding for an extended period of time.
anyway did you guys remember that one gag in asdfmovie where the sun tells a random guy "hey look up here.... HAHA now you're blind!"
Thanks, now I will rewatch those goofy videos.

7:38 Its not that America failed to teach us not to look at the sun, its because we have the FREEDOM TO DO SO!
🦅🦅🦅
Freedom of stupidity
i looked at it extremely briefly during the period of partial eclipse, and during totality it is safe to look at without protection. the instant it comes back around on the other side though, that brightness cuts like a knife and feels like a laser going right in your eye. no damage to me though, and no pain or anything. just be careful about it. in the time leading up to it, i'd look at it through my peripheral, where i wouldn't get a good view of it, or would take a piece of paper and cut a very tiny hole in it with the tip of a knife and look at the shadow, as the hole in the paper creates a pinhole projector that will show the eclipse's shape as it moves toward totality. What shocked me was how dark it got during totality, it was like post-dusk night time. Pretty cool.
Many people in the US couldn't even see a major covering, so using a colander or making a paper projector made it more interesting. The little crescents were cool. I did this at school long ago. Also the light filtering through the tree leaves was beautiful 🌙
@@KATinBLACK The trees over here still haven't recovered from winter (hell, we had the worst snowstorm of the year on the fourth), so sadly we didn't get to see it filtering through the tree leaves. I did get to see it through the holes in our neighbor's little lattice on their balcony, as it was in line to land the shadows on our balcony and projected the eclipse as well.
It is weird, but even though it's certainly bad that a lot of people damaged their eyes in this event, I am happy about the topic since I as an optician actually understand the stuff being talked about better than Mr. Streamer
I just picture the NPC meme wojak looking at the eclipse, getting angry his eye hurts, and immediately googling it.
“what is a 5th grader like 2 years old?”
💀💀💀
What makes the eclipse so dangerous is the fact that it’s blacked out, removing the innate human response to squint, which tightens the pupils and eyes so that the light isn’t enhanced, the exact opposite happens when the eclipse happens, your eye actually widens to let in more light as it thinks it’s okay, focusing the light even more on your retinas in damaging it further, looking at the sun is perfectly fineas long as you’re squinting, and if you can do that without squinting i think you’ve got much bigger problems at hand, looking at the eclipse is also completely safe as long as long as you’re squinting as you would looking at the sun normally.
🤓🤓
I had to force myself to look away when the moon was uncovering the sun because it didn't hurt my eyes but I'm glad I looked for a second it looked so beautiful
You got all the right information and then contradicted yourself in the conclusion.
Squinting would still mess up your eyes because as you said it's your pupils that widens because of no light. Squinting wouldn't make them go normal, so you'd take in at least 2x the damage of looking straight up at the sun.
About 15-20 yrs ago, there was a very small eclipse in my country and we didn't have glasses or anything like that, so we used one of those masks that's for welders, with the very dark glass so it doesn't hurt your eyes. Worked pretty well

I had full on WELDING HELMETS with my father to look at it. However, due to the damn clouds we saw a Crescent Sun for like 3 seconds tops.
If you waited for the total eclipse then you could have looked at it without glasses, people really getting cooked for watching the boring part
Before the eclipse is when you pull out a colander and look at the ground actually. Way cooler than looking up. Then you look up at the total eclipse
I have officially been watching pyrocinical for a year now and I think I’m dying .

Pointing a camera at the sun that isn’t a DSLR can also burn your image sensor
Better than burning your eyes tbh
people have fricking phones.... why dont they just use their phones? are they stupid?
Well, I was planning on doing that as well, but apparently, by doing that, you have the same effect on your camera lens unless you use specific gear for it.
@@RogueX1.0 i mean, thats infinitely better then having your eyes damaged by it instead
Aiming a camera at the sun damages the camera in the same way it does your eyes, because cameras are just mechanical eyes.
i did that last eclipse i can remember and i was around 11 years old. i didnt even need to because i didnt know it doesnt go over my state, but if adults are doing this than it really is just natural selection.
@@RogueX1.0 dont look at your phone and record it. look at it after. thats what 11 year old me did, so.
I'm in Iceland and it only made the sun look Crescented, but my Astigmatism made it impossible for me to see the eclipse, even after the moon went in ~40% of the way the sun was just a blob of light for me
Got to see the whole totality in my state. During totality you can look at it without any protection. As soon as a tiny sliver of sun is back out you have to put the eclipse glasses back on. Even with the glasses I got some strain on my eyes

That post eclipse depression is real. Nothing will ever show the complete magnificence of an eclipse and it is truly something everyone should experience.
The set I got, you can’t see ANYTHING unless you shine a phone light directly into them, and even then it’s just a tiny little yellow-orange orb. They worked extremely well, so much so that my the people I was with were fine even though they definitely watched longer than they were instructed to.
The memes about how pyro spends 5 minutes explaining something (glasses) is some how true.

it's wierd how only in Al-Quran ever mentions and predict this Eclipe and not in any other religions.
Takes fraction of a second to test for yourself on why you shouldn't look at the sun. Pyro turned it into a 24 minute video.
I use my welding goggles for watching eclipses.
12:41 *pyro slowly raises up his reading glasses off camera*
Looking at the sun during an eclipse is less potent than looking at the normal daylight sun. It is sneakier the other way which is why people need to be warned because it doesn't hurt at first.
A bunch of Americans going blind from looking at the sun is peak America, any other country would have been fine lol
I think looking at the full blown sun isnt as bad because the pain you feel when you look at really bright objects is your retina contracting way harder than it can handle, and you instinctively squint to relieve the pressure, both mechanisms significantly dimming the incoming light. I dont think either of those things happen when you look at an eclipse, meanwhile an eclipse outputs just as much solar radiation but with a fraction of the light.
Your retina can't contract lmao. You mean the iris.
It's not a serial number. It's a norm or standard number. EN ISO stands for European standard and international standardisation organisation. The numbers after specify the standard. So this would be a standard which is the same in Europe and internationally. There is also an American equivalent called ANSI or American National Standards Institute. A lot of countries have these kinds of standardisation institutions.
Edit: The problem with the glasses is that they do not meet this international standard. Or rather the wrong one. The glasses shown here meet the standards of regular sunglasses (EN ISO 12312-1) however, they lack the designation for sunglasses with filters for directly looking into the sun (EN ISO 12312-2).
Oh wow that’s really interesting. Thanks for explaining that it gives a lot of context to things I’ve been reading about identifying correct authentic eclipse glasses.
In Canada as well. It was way cool watching everything go dark fast.

I was deadass thinking about this while not knowing why when there was talk about the eclipse
to be fair judging by that shelf he should be around 5'7. I used that purple mouse he has which is 700mm or 70cm. The mouse is roughly two shelf boxes and there is 4 of them which is 140 i added another 70/2 for the bottom since it seems roughly the same size as one box , which gave me 175 which is 5'7. it should be either slightly more or less but I'm confident using my stupid math that he's around 5'7.
Fell on , I love you

People's eyes hurt a bit from staring at one thing for a long period of time. It's not a big deal, and it doesn't last long. It's fairly rare for any permanent damage to happen. You would have had to have looked directly at the uncovered sun for longer than a second or two. The eclipse doesn't change the sun's effects on one's eyes.
But it doesn't explain how idiots stared for a minute long and ask why their eyes hurt
Okay, thank you. Because Ngl reading articles and seeing all these videos have made me so anxious even though I legit wore glasses 😭 thinking even a millisecond of an accidental glass would give you eye damage

Video summarized: People are Stupid. What else is new?
There you go, slop evaded and time saved.
It's fine to glance at an eclipse, much like it's fine to look at the sun for a bit, but normally your body goes "ouch that hurts, close your eyes now" and you also know it's stupid and will damage your eyes so you look away anyway, while in an eclipse it's not going to be as instantly painful and since you want to see it you'll be prone to looking longer than you should, which is when damage happens.
