Snipe are not a species you get close to every day and I surprised to see them so close to this hide

  • I spend a weekend in Lincolnshire, mostly at Frampton Marsh RSPB reserve. I have not done well here for photography in the past, but this time it was different and I enjoyed the opportunities. Brent geese and Common snipe I especially do well with.
    I use the OM-1 Mk2 and the 100-400mm OM lens, with the occassional bit of slow motion video taken on the Lumix G9 mk2.

    That channel is the River Haven, the tidal part of the River Witham that runs through Boston. In the 1970s, ships used to use it to get to the docks at Boston, but I don't know what it's like now.
    I have seen snipe at Fairburn Ings nature reserve in Yorkshire, in the eastern part of the reserve, east of the main lake there.

    Nice shots using the Oly 100-400. I use this lens too (with the OM-1 original) for still photos. I think the lens is often given bad marks for being "soft." Under the right conditions, however, it can take beautiful, detailed photos, as you show here.

      The difference in quality between the 100-400mm and 150-400mm is marginaol.

    I loved this video. Many of the birds are familiar here in California, and some not. We have Wilson’s Snipe in the US, but they exhibit the same stealth you show so well. I can count on one hand the times I’ve photographed them. Our American Wigeons are similar, but with distinctly different plumage. Occasionally a Eurasian Wigeon will make an appearance here. Back in July, a vagrant Ruff - quite rare in this hemisphere - showed up in a Bay Area marsh. It created quite a stir in the birding community! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and craft! Also nice to see you using the 100-400, my favorite lens. Hope you get your Great White back soon.

    Great shots of the usual autumn ducks. I like seeing their personalities, for instance widgeon can get quite aggressive to each other. Last year at Arundel WWT, well over a dozen snipe appeared… the harder you looked the more popped up.

    How's this for a coincidence. Yesterday, I just dropped in at a wooden bird hide, to check on a Starling murmuration. I was a bit late, and it was after sunset. There was someone in the hide, just about to leave, and I was talking to them, when outside the window, I saw something move. It was a Common Snipe, then another one. There were about 5-6, really close to the hide, totally oblivious to us and feeding. 2 of the windows were open, and they must have been able to hear us, but they took, no notice at all. I hadn't got my camera, and anyway it was too dark. But I've never been so close to Snipe before. Normally they stay a long way off. I'm just waiting for some light, maybe tomorrow, to get some photographs and footage if I can. Lovely video as usual.

    The great shame is that due to the severe decline of both snipe and woodcock they should have been given protection but parliament voted no, I expect when they are gone an inquiry will be set up to find out why it was allowed to happen, that is the norm in the uk not to do anything whilst the situation is fixable.

      @@MikeLaneFRPS Hey Mike, I was going to ask a similar question to Christopher. I find it quite frustrating this lens which is a shame as I will never be able to get the other WHITE lens (fingers crossed the repair is fixable and lasts for a long time!). the focusing is rarely able to get spot on focus even on a tripod. So my question was about IS.......I see you leave it on but do you add LENS IS ie "ON" or leave that "OFF" to go with the camera IS? I am aware that you are professional and have many years at using kit so maybe it is my lack of experience. I have tried ON and OFF for lens IS, but never sure as many folks differ in opinion. Just wondered what your take on it was as you get quality images with your lens (again more than to do with experience I feel).

    • @MikeLaneFRPS
      @MikeLaneFRPS  Місяць тому

      @@Sarah-g6k I leave it on the lens and camera body and let the system work it out. It can't combine the two as with the 150-400mm, but I give it no thought. I use a tripod most of the time and when I do hand hold amazed at how good the IS is.
      I would test the lens on a static subject such as a tin with words on it, using a tripod and a decent shutter speed. If you can't get that sharp you have a problem with the lens.

      @@MikeLaneFRPS Don't you think that this lens renders sometimes hazy out-of-focus image? Especially in the background when you have wet grass. There seems to be some spherical aberration. But it is not visible all the time.I got it with MC-14 so I got rid of that and I thought taht some of your shots were taken with MC-14. It is sad to hear you have a problem with the big white. hi mike
    I hope they add AF at 120 frames through a firmware update, that should be possible. Have you already contacted Om-system about this? I hope your 150-400 isn't too badly damaged. How do you still have a warranty on this lens? in the Netherlands this is 5 years. I hope you get it repaired soon.
    greetings from the Netherlands
