Depends on the Petco. Prices on saltwater fish are so gouged right now at local fish stores. I've had no issues with petco, and routinely see pests on fish at the "good" stores in my city.
@@bordeauxfr1574 Same with me. LFS fish are harvested the same way as Petco's fish. LFS just inflates the cost, has better selection of fish, and because it's more specialized, people tend to think they are better/healthier fish. That's not always the case. What would you think of a couple of fire fish or a Royal Gramma instead of the Dottyback? I am onboard with a couple of occy clowns and maybe the cardinals too. I have a 29g biocube.
Good advice! However, as a semi newbie, i think you missed out on a critical new, small tank, owner. A great idea is to wait getting the fish a week or two later, and get a number of decent invertebrates, like shrimps and hermit crabs so they are going to clean up the classic newbie mistake of overfeeding, which can screw up the balance and protien levels of the tank ( even with an adequate dry or wet skimmer!). A healthy number of waste eaters like these will keep the tank clean, water clean and the filters etc working at optimum! A few attractive small shrimp and attractive active hermit crabs also bring interest to the base of your tank. And action when the fish are busy doing their thing in out of sight areas ( my reef rocks have a couple of inches over the entire width and height of the tank, so they can hide and chillout). And having the invertebrate base gets new tank owners into good habits with correct feeding and maintenence before subjecting the fish to potentially toxic environments!
Wow the frostbite clownfish and the bangaii cardinal are amazing! Don't know which one I like more.. Thank you for such an informative video :) - vanessa
Great video. I am about to start on my saltwater tank. I already bought the tank but i kept upgrading my planted tanks to all AIO so I put the saltwater on hold. I could have used the money for my saltwater since I bought a lot of bigger tanks that a lot of people in the hobby would say start with that one for saltwater. However I have a 25 lagoon that I am going to use for the saltwater. I feel that starting small 20-40 is the best way to learn in any type of aquarium, May it be salt, fresh or even brackish. If you are really into the hobby and want to keep them as pets, not fish you need to learn the basic and the care and work that needs to go into smaller tanks. Even though bigger tanks or forgiving that means to me that a lot of people will used that as an excuse to not keep up with their husbandry.
Lol I remember my Valentini Puffer being one of my first purchases, and thankfully he never ate my coral or inverts. My second fish was a gold dot maroon haha, and he ended up being a mega jerk trying to monopolize every anemone in the entire tank. I've since moved up from that 90g to a 405 gallon and some of the competition for space has eased up.
Love the videos! My wife and I are watching through your series before we get started but in addition do you have ny book resources you would recommend for starters?
Let me say that we were one of these newbies who didn't quarantine our fish. Everything was going along swimmingly and then disaster. We had gotten a couple of Royal Grammas that we put into our display tank. One died, then the other. We just figured it was a fluke. Then one of our clowns suddenly had white spots. Before we could even get a diagnosis determined the clown had died and the other clown was showing signs of spots. We did not have any medicine on hand to treat what we eventually figured out was Brooklynella a.k.a. clownfish disease. We also didn't have a quarantine tank to move the sick fish to. We rapidly got the appropriate medicine shipped to us, as well as a separate quarantine tank, but the damage was already done. We lost all three clown fish, and two Pajama Cardinals. More than half of our livestock was dead. With the remaining three fish and our invertebrates we were able to get them into separate tanks one being the new quarantine tank. Our display tank had to be completely cleaned out and left fallow for over six weeks. We are still recovering from this disaster weeks later. Many tears were she'd by my 13 year old as fish after fish died. Lesson learned. Going forth we will always quarantine before adding a new fish to our display tank. We lost our beloved clowns, and it was a costly loss both emotionally, and financially. Don't make our mistake, take the time and do things right.
By the way I have a tank turned it into a salt water and with a damsel on the cycling too as we speak I love the way you explained it thanks a lot but i really wants to purchase is a peacock mantis shrimp

Can you put a yellow watchman goby in the same tank as a mandarinfish? I know they have similar behavior patterns so I am concerned about them being territorial and aggressive. This would be in a biocube 32. Thanks, and love the vids!

Don’t get clownfish. They can be territorial and mean. Mine like to bite me and have killed some of my new fish that have been added after them. I would suggest a Pygmy angel. I wanted a pair of clown fish with soft coral and a yellow watchmen goby with pistol shrimp... will that work in a 20g??
They won’t get along well in quarantine. If you add a few yellowtail damsels and a pair of pajama cardinals to quarantine at the same time, it’s basically the same as adding them both to the main display at the same time. The yellowtail will be territorial.
No matter what i try i cant keep clownfish as they seem to die of internal parasites, every other fish i have is fine. Almost all nice looking wrasses should be able to live in a 30 Gal and some need a little bit bigger tanks but i would recommend getting a cleaner wrasse and one of the halichoeres wrasses they look AMAZING. Strongly recommend one of those for a nano tank. I have a 130 Gal and i have 4 tangs and 6 different types of halichoeres wrasse and all fish in my tank thrive. Good luck!!
Getting into the hobby and love your videos! However just received my pair of clown fish from divers den and came dead! So disappointed with my first experience with them.
I'm still learning about saltwater and I have a question. If I order from the driver's den, is there a way to add multiple fish without damaging the tank and hurting the bioload?
depends. i assume the tank is brand new so if it is then not a good idea to get more then 2 unless it's a huge tank if the tank is brand new and you want to get more then 2 then be ready to do a water change every 3 days at the bare minimum for atleast 2-4 weeks even if you think your tank is cycled. something i do for brand new tank is if it's 20 gallons it gets 2 fish at the start if it's 40 gallon it gets 4 fish when it comes to display tanks. the frequency of the water change will depend on the water testing that you'll be doing but again if brand new tank then do water change every other day or 3 days bare minimum. this also depends on the size of the fish you'll be getting if it's small fish you can get away 3 day water change for 2-4 weeks but if it's big fish then daily water change and water testing until you have zero anomia and non toxic level nitrate if it is an already established tank which you don't have i'm guessing then you should be good with multiple fish at once just make sure the size is similar of the fish and put in some more live bacteria but again keep testing going other wise you might start a minicycle. so as long as you do atleast 2 water changes every week you should be good with multiple fish just know after EVERY water change replace the lost bacteria based on the amount of water removed even tho bacteria doesn't live in water better safe then sorry with a dead fish or 2
Anyone know the name of the fish after clownfish? I can't find his name anywhere. Would be nice to write important things like fish species name on the screen or important words. Thank you.
I set my tank up 3 weeks ago and pooped and peed in it to start the cycle. It still hasn't completed so fished out all the poop I could. How much longer should it take to finish?
Either one of them could work, I wouldn't do both the firefish and royal gramma. Personally, I'd pick the firefish, they are much more chill and more out in the open. I find royals tend to claim a part of the rockwork and hide a lot
I have a 125 gallon that I want to start as a saltwater tank. I am trying to figure out all what I need to start i have the tank, 2 penguin marineland 350 gallons per hour filters, and a home made hood. I dont want to spend over 2 grand for my start up but if I do I do it's worth it. If you or anyone could help with what I need to start a 125 gallon salt water tank it would be appreciated.
Well you need 1. Salt 2. Filter + Heater 3. Stone (Would recommend live but it's more expensive) 4. Sand (The same as the stone better live but more expensive. 5. Lighting (If you only want fish you can just use a simple ordinary led but otherwise for coral i would recommend for a 4 foot tank 2 AI Hydra 32 6. Get the tank to cycle 7 If you think about getting alot of waves of fish get a 30 gal quarantine and put all new fish for 30 days with copper treatment in there. 8 Getting corals (If you really want some corals go and get some leather corals and some zoanthids they are really hardy, does'nt cost that much and they look stunning. If you want some more help you can contact me via facebook (Melwin Magnusson) or Instagram (melwinmagnusson05) Im only 15 but i have been in this hobby for 6 years now so you can trust me. Wish you all the best with your new saltwater tank!!
I followed this advice... got 2 clown, 1 yellow watchmen goby, amd 1 orchid dottyback... it was bad advice. The dottyback are aggressive fish and ended up killing my goby. 😡
They are considered semi-aggressive. Orchid dottybacks are actually quite peaceful for a dottyback, because some dottybacks, like Royal and Magnificent Dottybacks, are even considered AGGRESSIVE. Now that's what I call a little ball of fury!
I don't know if you'll ever see this since it's been 9 months since you posted this vid, but if so I have a ? I hope you can help with: I have a "snowflake" ocelaris. (I call it a 'her' so this is the pronoun I'm going to use now) I got her and a sibling when they were itty babies from a local breeder. Her brother died 2 years ago in a rock slide during a move. :( I have had her total for... maybe 6 years. After her brother I wanted her to have a clown buddy, so I got her a black ocelaris, but she picked on him relentlessly, until he had no dorsal fin left at all and other fins were a mess. I bought him MUCH smaller than her so there would be no testing of hierarchy, but that clearly didn't help. Unfortunately I put him in a plastic basket container within the main tank to sep them and he eventually managed to jump out through a 2" gap and died on the floor :( So, finally my ? - This was asked to me and after some thought, it doesn't seem THAT far fetched so... IN your opinion, is it possible that she just didn't like the new clown because he looked different than her/her previous roommate, in that they are orange and this guy was black? Or is she just a bully and it would be best to never get her another clown friend? Notes: She did bully her brother too, but never to the point of damaging fins. She has been alone with only CUCs and somewhere in there is a starfish, for about a year now. She lives in a 29 biocube. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!!
Is there another fish beyond these list??? They are very basic (in a good way), I mean clown and cardinal fish is literally the fish I get for my tank, but I need something a little bit above this list, something more interesting...
@@Saltwateraquariumdotcom mine are small too, nano (or pico??) 45cm x 30cm x 30cm. I got 2 clown and very2 tiny buterfly fish (impulsive buy), and plan to buy 2 cardinal, and watch man goby maybe... Agreed about the list, very2 exelent choises. but is there another more interesting fish for small tank?
You can, i had my hippo tang in a 60 gal for a year and he's thriving in my main 130 gal right now. but if you want to have a tang in there for the rest of it's life i would recommend a kole tang
Definitely DO NOT buy from Live Aquaria’s divers den. I have tried buying fish from this section twice, and they both came in DOA. Unfortunately I thought this would be a good choice since it was supported by this channel, but I guess that was a bad choice on my end. I have done purchases on the internet in the past with success, so I believe this is an issue on Live Aquaria’s end, so I will no longer be purchasing from them. If you want the best success, find a good LFS and get to know them well.

i assume the tank is brand new so if it is then not a good idea to get more then 2 unless it's a huge tank
if the tank is brand new and you want to get more then 2 then be ready to do a water change every 3 days at the bare minimum for atleast 2-4 weeks even if you think your tank is cycled. something i do for brand new tank is if it's 20 gallons it gets 2 fish at the start if it's 40 gallon it gets 4 fish when it comes to display tanks.
the frequency of the water change will depend on the water testing that you'll be doing but again if brand new tank then do water change every other day or 3 days bare minimum. this also depends on the size of the fish you'll be getting if it's small fish you can get away 3 day water change for 2-4 weeks but if it's big fish then daily water change and water testing until you have zero anomia and non toxic level nitrate
if it is an already established tank which you don't have i'm guessing then you should be good with multiple fish at once just make sure the size is similar of the fish and put in some more live bacteria but again keep testing going other wise you might start a minicycle.
so as long as you do atleast 2 water changes every week you should be good with multiple fish
just know after EVERY water change replace the lost bacteria based on the amount of water removed even tho bacteria doesn't live in water better safe then sorry with a dead fish or 2
what if you buy more than one fish at a time. you cant have one tank for each fish to quarantine
Eric Lambert 1 more week and it should be good to go👌🏻

I'm going to start over, my house smells like shit and my tank is growing shit that looks like it can eat me.
I need a video like this for a 60 gal cube.
Good luck with the online store
Can you but 2 pairs of clowns in 1 tank ?
Nice video
Luckily for me, my LFS uses the same food as I do
Would a fire fish work with 2 clownfish in 20 gallon or royal gramma. Wondering if both if possible
Either one of them could work, I wouldn't do both the firefish and royal gramma. Personally, I'd pick the firefish, they are much more chill and more out in the open. I find royals tend to claim a part of the rockwork and hide a lot
Simon E
Thanks for info, I’ll get the firefish
Yes
I just want that shirt
👊👍
Great video I have a 10 gallon Innovative Marine with 1 cardinal fish and 1 scooter blenny can I add 1 more fish
A small clownfish would be ok
Great video you should have gone all out on the first fish and got some black storm clowns it would of killed your bank account though
We should do a break the bank build
Put 5 radions on a small tank and run them all on 5%
Oh man, death by led
You would be able to keep anything but acros because everything else would bleach
About how many fish can you have in your salt water tank for the budget build size
i Would say about 5-8 fish and then you need a cleanup crew too.
2-6
What is that yellow and white butterfly looking fish in the background
pyramid butterflyfish
not thanks
very cool video ........ which fish would fit into a 90g cube
Ronald Lange stay tuned & subscribe to this channel. Plenty more to come
does divers den treat with copper or do they just watch for parasites?
I can ask
is it possible to put a tang in a 55 gallon tank with a lot swimming space
which tang is possible?
Too small, they get like 1'5" long.
Kole tang probs
Are orchid dottybacks semi aggressive because a site says they are
They are considered semi-aggressive.
Unfortunately I put him in a plastic basket container within the main tank to sep them and he eventually managed to jump out through a 2" gap and died on the floor :(
So, finally my ? - This was asked to me and after some thought, it doesn't seem THAT far fetched so... IN your opinion, is it possible that she just didn't like the new clown because he looked different than her/her previous roommate, in that they are orange and this guy was black? Or is she just a bully and it would be best to never get her another clown friend?
Notes: She did bully her brother too, but never to the point of damaging fins. She has been alone with only CUCs and somewhere in there is a starfish, for about a year now. She lives in a 29 biocube.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!!
I would copy and paste your question into a forum post on nano-reef.com/forum, or reef2reef.com 😊
I think I mist the video of whot filter to use
If it is your first tank, how do you quarantine your fish?
You dont really need to quarantine tank for the first batch of fish beacuse you can just treat your main tank more easily than getting a quarantine
You start with two tanks, one display and the other quarantine.
Is there another fish beyond these list???
They are very basic (in a good way), I mean clown and cardinal fish is literally the fish I get for my tank, but I need something a little bit above this list, something more interesting...
aditya febrian Saputra for this sized tank, the clowns, cardinal, dottiback and goby are enough. What size tank do you have?
@@Saltwateraquariumdotcom mine are small too, nano (or pico??) 45cm x 30cm x 30cm.
I got 2 clown and very2 tiny buterfly fish (impulsive buy), and plan to buy 2 cardinal, and watch man goby maybe...
Agreed about the list, very2 exelent choises. but is there another more interesting fish for small tank?
would you put tangs in a 60 gallon tank
No, too small
You can, i had my hippo tang in a 60 gal for a year and he's thriving in my main 130 gal right now. but if you want to have a tang in there for the rest of it's life i would recommend a kole tang
how about saltwater crustacean?
I like this, its like a shitty BRS
Which marine plant decrease nitrates and nitrite?
growing macro algae in a refugium can decrease nitrates. Nitrites should be very low or non-existent in an established tank
SaltwaterAquarium macro algae is also good for amphipods and copepods
What about dwarf angels?
they can be kept in a 70 gal and up
What about firefish
You can have them in a 10 gal and up and they are hardy
Looks at your tank...
Everyone saying you must quarantine but I’m setting a 100l up seems pointless
Quarantine is mostly used to observe & condition new arrivals you add to an established tank.
I have puffer fish and he is not Aggressive
forgot to say clowns don't need an anemone in captivity
😎👍🏾
How many fish can you put in this budget build?
~5" of fish and then some invertebrates
Hardly anything in a tiny tank
Definitely DO NOT buy from Live Aquaria’s divers den. I have tried buying fish from this section twice, and they both came in DOA. Unfortunately I thought this would be a good choice since it was supported by this channel, but I guess that was a bad choice on my end. I have done purchases on the internet in the past with success, so I believe this is an issue on Live Aquaria’s end, so I will no longer be purchasing from them. If you want the best success, find a good LFS and get to know them well.
what is the name of the fish @ 4:11 ?
bangai cardinal fish
"why quarantine?"
shows pictures of an asian country and fried crickets
lmaoooooo
Divers den
Fish for the rich
They sell their fish for triple the price
I'm concerned, did you loose weight? And I know last time I watched one of your videos you weren't that pale, everything alright?
Doddyback eat a lot and will eat others food
How to do a saltwater aquarium for cheap= you dont.
Haha thats almost always the case
Lionfish aren't aggressive.
My first fish was a lionfish and he was in a 15 gal and hes about 12 inches now in my 200 gal
