Thanks Mark! That was helpful getting into the weeds and the simple but not always intuitive details!

Nice video. My pro tip. Started my reef tank many years ago , and i used a heating pad ( yes , the kind you use for sore back ) put a small towel on top of pad, and bucket on top of that. Works great. Thanks again.

Also, don’t want to do long drip acclimation for any shipped fish because of high ammonia levels in the bag they come in.

From Online shops I've used the drip , Local usual just let the bag float in the tank with adding water. . I do mine in QT

Just ran into this series. I started a saltwater tank 2weeks ago. I pretty much did it this way, without actually seeing these videos first. I’ve added a few more fish than saltwater suggested ( I now would highly recommend to follow the 2 clown Model.) didn’t have any friends with tanks so no used filter pads. I added a couple live rocks to compensate. All and all follow this guide and you’ll be fine. One thing I would add is when the brown algae don’t freak out and vacuum all your substrate... you’ll be ordering dr. Tim’s one and done all over again.
Great job on this series @saltwateraquarium

Finally found someone who addressed the issue of temperature in the bucket! Was trying to understand why people would drip acclimate for potentially hours, then chuck them in a heated tank.. the heater is a great idea ty!

Hi Mark, I’ve watched several of your videos and you’ve been of great help to me as a soon-to-be reefer. However, I would like you to confirm whether we should follow the same processes for acclimating fish and invertebrates. Thanks!

Don’t forget phytoplex for about 5-15 minutes at end of drip. Don’t add clownfish as first fish in a tank that will receive other fish. Choices matter.

Depends on the size and variety of clown. I added a couple false clowns first and have had no problems introducing any other fish. Greenies, blenny, watchman, coral beauty, bi color. All get along swimmingly

I just put my first fish in, a clown and seems fine. I think my snails are dead though! BUT i was told to just add water lil by lil to bag, maybe because he is a hardy fish, he did well. I think I will buy a drip for next fish though. I was so scared to cut the bag and float, mainly because the water was yellow he said it was medicated? I notice the tanks look yellow the fish were in,maybe lighting but perhaps he added medication after. Not sure. . Is putting medication normal? Also I was scared to cut because it seemed if you did that method you showed that it could sink in the water adding that much and the medicated water would get into mine. Also in order to not mess up the salinity in my tank, do I teat it like a water change and just replace the exact amount of salted water I took out of my tank and put in bag. I am a newbie! I know you need to top of daily because of salinity but dont have to worry when you remove it and replace!!! . What if you forget to top off one day?

Question, when you open the bag doesn’t the water slowly become toxic?

If using a quarantine tank, can't one start out with excess salinity there, test salinity in the bag, then dilute the quarantine tank to the same salinity?

any good info on acclimating say pepermint shrimp? I never used to have a problem drip acclimating them but my last 2 attempts the shrimp started twitching uncontrollably and then died within a few hours.

If you dont wanna suck the tube and accidentally drink salty water fully submerge the tube in the water making sure its full of water, plug on end and drop it into the bucket itll do its own siphoning

I have always acclimated my fish in a bucket with the water it came from plus 20ml of tank water every 7-10 minutes. I have yet to lose any fish with my method. Maybe I am lucky but my fish in all 4 tanks are beyond happy

If the first thing one does is INCREASE temperature, doesn't that make any ammonia in the bag more toxic? Why not start out with some Prime in the bag?

I do it like this. First open the bag. Then put it in the tank and rollthe side over so the bag floats on the rum of the bag make sure your fish sits still before leaving it alone. Some fish get hyperactive becauce of shipment and can jump out so becarefull then put some water in the bag leave it no need to set a clock do this 3 times or so ceepibg an eye on the fish after a Good 30 to 45 minuten care fully take the fish out off the bag and in the tank. Do you have coral in your tank and gave clown fish then get a tube and some more water from the aquarium. put the vis in that water. Keep a cup with tank put the tube in the coral and poor the fish is the tube in the coral make sure the clown fish goe's down in to the coral this works 90% of the time.

Please excuse any ignorance here, just doing some research before taking the plunge. Does salt water behave very differently from freshwater in respect of acclimatisation? Both methods you describe can be harmful if not fatal to freshwater fish. The reason being that the CO2 & ammonia build up during transportation, however CO2 lowers ph & at lower PH ammonia is actually ammonium & harmless! Once the bag is opened co2 diffusers out ph rises, ammonium becomes ammonia. So best to get fish out of that bag ASAP, hence the plop and drop method, sounds harsh but there is good reason it's best.

Can anyone answer on how we are supposed to make up for lost water in the saltwater tank after throwing out the rest of the water we used to acclimate??? Thanks.

    • @Saltwateraquariumdotcom
      @Saltwateraquariumdotcom  4 роки тому +1

It should only be a small amount that will minimally effect your salinity. If it's alot, replace with a little freshly mixed saltwater.
