- Becket - Faith in Film w/ Fr Dave Nix Ep 6 - with Patrick Coffin
Have you ever considered the profound messages faith-based films can convey? This episode, with the illustrious Patrick Coffin and inestimable Fr David Nix in tow, traverses the spiritual landscape of cinema, dissecting the complex interplay between character development and the historical backdrop that gives these stories universal appeal. Whether it's the emotional transformation of Thomas Beckett in "Beckett" or the raw potency of "Monsieur Vincent," our conversation peels back the narrative layers, inviting listeners to reflect on the enduring questions of loyalty, friendship, and personal sacrifice.
Join us on a cinematic pilgrimage that meanders through the investiture controversy, the misunderstood Inquisition, and the debates over church authority that still resonate today. The episode doesn't shy away from tough topics, touching on modern controversies like church scandals in "Calvary" and the impact of these films on our collective conscience and societal discourse.
By the end of our dialogue, we tackle the transformational power of spirituality in film, from the internal struggles of characters like Henry II to the profound messages of forgiveness and humility. Films like "Beckett" are not just stories on a screen; they explore the human condition. So, whether you're a devout cinephile or a curious seeker, this episode promises to enrich your understanding and ignite discussions on the role of faith in society and cinema.

It’s great having Patrick coffin on!! He should be a regular on Faith and Film he seems very knowledgeable and excited about movies
My wife and I just walked a pilgrimage from the Tower of London to Canterbury during Holy Week of 2024. We prayed for the Church and for our Bishops through the intercession of St Thomas More and St Thomas Becket.
Thank you for doing this!
Brilliant film. Peter O'Tool and Richard Burton were mesmerising.
Patrick coffin glad to see ya!!!
Amazing! Watched with my young son last night and watched this review on Twitter this morning 💪🏼 So many takeaways!
Awesome! Thank you!
This was great, so glad you chose this film! Becket has been one of my favorite movies from the get go…when I was a kid I liked it even better than A Man for all Seasons. It was more exciting and really funny. Great flick 🎥! Some of the best acting in cinema history.
Amazing film.....his transformation is fierce as is his great love to uphold God's honor. The regalia and pomp on becoming a Bishop, so touching❤️🔥😭
Excellent show!!! You have to have these two guys talk about Bergolio!! Keep up the excellent work!!!🙏🙏🙏
Grateful for this! Great discussion, really pertinent.
The Excommunication scene is totally boss, if only Bishops today spoke like St. Thomas Becket of Canterbury...
Ok I can’t stop myself. Another very good movie. Flowers of War, 2011 film. Takes place 1937 China. Christian Bale impersonating a deceased priest in an orphanage that had been run by the priest. Beautiful film, especially seeing Bales own transformation into what a truly great priest is. My favorite performance by Bales.
Our priest does preach the perils!!!! Glory to Christ!
This might be the greatest film of all time.
This the best movie i have seen in a long time. Thank you for the recommendation.
Oh yes, I've goten push back from a few Catholics (maybe more than have actually spoken to me) about speaking about what's happening and the horrible things going on in the Church. They've said the same things, "Let God fix it" or "God will fix it all" "You're not helping by talking about this." I think it's because they're all just scared out of their pants about it and don't know what to do except tell those of us more 'outspoken' to basically STHU. Interestingly though, I've gotten some 'thank yous' from Protestant / Evangelical friends for speaking about the horror show of this papacy and the disastrous fallout from this ilk. For me it is BOTH AND and THAT IS CATHOLIC to the core! Not either or! Great points all of you made! I loved that it is not "activism" or "quietism" that is the answer, it is BOTH AND for all of us! In our own way, our personalities and temperaments when yielded to God will be used by Him to "DO" what He tells us in our own litlte corners of the world and thereby help change the world for the better and heal the Church for all souls to come and be saved.
Great show!
RE - Crusades, consider looking up anything by Dr. Brendan McGuire for the Institute of Catholic Culture. He studied under Dr. Madden for his PhD, cites other big names in crusade scholarship like Jones, and was a devout trad. He died of cancer a few years back - young guy with a family - so remember him to God.
Thanks for the suggestion
Diary òf a country priest 😊
I just got Green Dolphin Street not long ago to read after a recommendation from a friend to read it. I am going to read it next after the series I am reading, but I didn't know there was a movie. I will definitely have to check it out!
Anthony and Rob:
Are there any plans to have another cigar party that you had in PA? That was very well done and would love to see another one happen, discussing the state of the Church.
Two Catholic-friendly films worth considering for review are Angels With Dirty Faces (1938) and El Cid (1961). Both timeless classics.
Patrick coffin is like an encyclopedia of movie knowledge
I have a beautiful Catholic movie that barely anyone has scene (maybe Fr. Nix or Mr. Coffin). Edges of the Lord. WWII, Willem Dafoe plays an incredible Polish priest in a small Polish Village. Young Haley Joel Osment plays a Jewish boy being hidden by a Catholic family. It was from 2001 and I believe Osment’s family was behind the movie. Beautiful, tragic and a truly Catholic.
❤❤❤ Accidentally stumbled on that movie! Just riveting!
ANTHONY LOVE THIS,WOULD YOU THINK TO DOING, "MARCELLINO PAN Y VINO"?
The Flowers of St Francis
"Monsieur Vincent" 1947 won an Honorary Award at the 1949 Academy Awards as an outstanding foreign film released in 1948.
Scarlett and the Black is good.
You should watch the old Disney classic mini series Elfago Baca. It is hour long episodes, 10 in total. The first episode is really Catholic but subsequent shows are less so. But it is a true story. A catholic man who led an incredible life in the wild west.
About the topic at 2:01:02 from the people at our parish who do this, I've heard their main goal is to save the Eucharist from desecration. My thought is that the priest should be saved, if the mass is incomplete. If the priest hasn't consumed the host after the consecration, and the priest suddenly dies at the altar, another priest has to be brought in to finish the mass. A lot of us are on traditional islands with only one traditional priest around. Of course we want to protect him!
It makes sense that the clergy invite the chance for martyrdom and the faithful try to prevent it. In the end God's Will will be done, so I wouldn't worry about it. 😊
The accounts of how Becket died at the Cathedral was pretty grim and brutal. The act of the cleric that was there with the 4 baron assassins was disgusting to say the least and turns ones stomach. Its something out of a modern horror film. I won't detail it here but you can find it online.
19:43 that actress is the benejesurite witch from dune
No way. Pretty cool trivia tidbit
And the bishop of London in the film is dressed like he's in Dune
Only someone from the Spacing Guild addresses a Reverend Mother with such disrespect ;)

What books from ABP Sheen would Patrick Coffin & Fr. Nix recommend?
2:05:00 i remember hearing a story of a man impaling a priest with a sword who had consecrated a host for a couple of muslim that wanted to desecrate It. After he dropped the priest, the muslims fled and the host miraculously levitated in the air, when the man kneeled to adore the Eucharist.
It’s kind of strange for someone who’s traditional like Anthony not to like older movies and old actors. You should love to see how people acted before the cultural revolution. Men were refined, debonair, articulate, and yet masculine. Women were elegant and feminine. You get to see the culture before the degeneracy of counter culture revolution. Compared to the inarticulate, irreverent, debauched modern entertainment industry it’s not remotely close. I could watch no movie after 1965 and be completely satisfied.
Yes later than than 1065 because 1066 is the battle of Hastings
Patrick coffin looks like the actor Peter Stormare somewhat and he played Lucifer in Constantine with Keanu reeves lol 😆
Fr Nix is tough for me to figure out. I follow his Telegram where he refers to the pope as Bergoglio and then I see him sitting in front of a pic of St Padre Pio. Something a bit off or just me?
Exactly what do you find to be "off"?? Just FYI, many Europeans, especially Italians, refer to a pope by their surname. Nothing unusual about that.
Just you bro
@@lorih9182 I don’t think that’s why he does it based on the things he says.
@jayguevara6153 If you’re going to accuse him of something then just be a man and do it
@@avoidingbabylon I tried to demonstrate what I was getting at. Did someone delete it?
John wayne wasn't in the Robe, he was in a different life of Jesus movie
Nice movie but there is immoral scene in the movie which for me ruins the movie
