  • I grew up in California, lived in Hawaii, and embarrassingly never learned to surf. So I decided to travel to Australia and give my self 5 days to learn to surf at Surf Camp Australia. With nearly no experience surfing in the past, this wasn't going to be easy, but I was up for the challenge.

Great, and the more you do it the better you'll get.

What enquiries did you make before booking for the week?
I have been investigating more surf lessons, and one of the questions I have been asking by e-mail is, "Should I feel like I was falling behind the rest of the group, is there an option to register for a private lesson in the evening with a different instructor as an extra help session?" Usually, the answer is 'No'. Then, the next option is contacting a different nearby place to ask if you can take an evening lesson as an extra help session. It might be a lot of logistical effort, but probably worth the cost. When I took windsurfing lessons, I would walk over to another school and sign up for a private windsurfing lesson (in parallel with the group lesson) to cover specifically the problem areas I was encountering. I found this approach quite helpful and learned a lot by doing it this way, despite still failing the second level of the group lessons. This is how I would manage my frustrations.

You need to learn how to go with the flow. Don’t get down on yourself if you don’t succeed first time, you only put pressure on yourself and then you don’t enjoy. I feel that you over analyse things, you’re here in Oz to experience life and enjoy yourself. Don’t forget that there are many beaches that you can hire a board, so I’m sure you’ll get plenty of practice before you head back to the US. Chin up smile and have a ripper of a time whilst here. As we say here “ have a good one “.

Well Done! Such an awesome experience both the up and the down. Dealing with frustration and finding your centre are lessons that can apply to all the endeavours of life. Can't wait to see what's next
