- Chris Stagg takes us on a journey through the 1960s history of rock and roll in the town of Leatherhead, Surrey, focusing on the Bluesette Club, and featuring Marc Bolan, John's Children and a very surprising lineup of other star names from the world of 60s music who all, as we will learn, made an appearance in the small town of Leatherhead.
This talk took place at the Leatherhead Parish Church on the 14th October 2022 and was a part of the Mole Valley Arts Alive festival.
This is a really wonderful bite of history. So many artists that I love were included. I really love & always keep a little 🕺Marc🩷 in my heart. Thanks for all your hard work & research on this valuable presentation✌️💟
Excellent! I was a big Bolan fan in 70/71, unfortunately I was only 10/11 years old at the time, so I missed out on that local scene. It was Marc that inspired me to take up the guitar. I am born and bred in Leatherhead so to think that I can walk in the footsteps of Marc and all the others……. Including Hendrix, wow!! I should take an acoustic down by the river in the summer and ride a white swan!! Excellent research, thanks for all the effort! Cheers!! 🤘🤘ps Chris, I think I met you in Barclays a few years back, was it you who had his drum kit up stairs in the bank!
Thanks! And yes, I am the one who had the drums in the Church Street building!
Excellent so far and only listened to the first 10 minutes. Looking forward to watching the rest. Thank you for sending me the link 🎸🎤🥁
Fantastic insight to the legendary John's Children club. Many thanks for posting!
Thanks! V glad you enjoyed; thanks for your comment!
Thank you very much for your kind words! Very pleased you enjoyed it!
A fantastic video and extensive research, all those Rock and Roll connections to my birth town of Leatherhead, thank you..👍🎸😃...
Thanks for that! Pleased you enjoyed!
Theres a fantastic book called John's Children by Dave Thompson that delves into the various escapades of the band.
Also Andy Ellison's autobiography Stunt Rocker is well worth a read too.
Thanks! Yes, got Andy’s book. And one by Steve Wright about the early 70s version of the band. Heard about the Dave T one, not got (yet!).
@@chrisstagg3523 There's currently a couple of books by Dave Thompson on Amazon A Midsummer Nights Scene (Which could be a reprint of the John's Children book) and Growing Up With John's Children which also covers A-Jaes, Jet, Jook, Sparks and The Blue Meanies amongst others and not forgetting the first volume of Simon Napier-Bell's memoirs You Don't Have To Say You Love Me.
Currently after the Steve Wright Radio Stars book, but it looks like it's as rare as 🤘🐴 💩 at the moment.
Have met Andy Ellison at Marc Bolan conventions in the late 90's/early 00's and although he's a total nutter, he's one of THE nicest, friendliest and most approachable blokes I've ever met.
Also met one of my drumming idols Chris Townson in 2002 at a convention and had a brilliant chat with him.
Finally have spoken to John Hewlett on the phone over the years, again a very nice chap and was chuffed to learn he once managed a favorite band of mine called Rock Goddess, an all female heavy metal trio from Wandsworth.
@@chrisstagg3523 Actually there wasn't a version of the band in the early 70s. So that isn't in my Come 'N' Play: John's Children 1974 - 1999 book. What is included from the 70s is their record and magazine appearances, with various LP and CD releases and magazine articles etc in the 80s and all their 90s gigs, along with media coverage and releases. This is all supported with tons of memorabilia.
Cheers Chris , enjoyed that and nice tribute for Pooh and a mention for the old man too !
Phew! Thanks v much….
Brian H also pleased at their mention! Cheers
I lieu of a book! I hope any viewing this find it interesting. Feel free to interact, either here or via the contact details noted at the end of the video-talk.
Comment below is from me…Gina 😊
At 28:30+ Jeff Beck RIP
Now that Peter Jackson has created the MAL Audio Software, will someone remix "Midsummer Night's Scene" and remove Manager Simon Napier Bell's annoying "woos" which he overdubbed without the band"s permission!
