Unrelated but i adore Taylor’s Omega Aqua Terra. Serious bit of kit and I love that he’s not too afraid to wear it whilst working on cars. He’s always got it on and I feel like it’s often unnoticed. beautiful. Alex’s Knut Gadd Cult Chrono is okay too.
If you're looking for a new daily driver and care about safety for your newborn how about a Volvo V60? It's safe, practical, can be fast (if you get the more powerful models), reliable, comfortable, relatively economical
Whoa Alex, your oil interval really amazes me. Didn't know that there's a petrolhead really believing that oil in high output diesel can be changed every 15k miles or even further.
Amazes me, yeah. BMW sucks ass with its 30 000km oil change intervals, bomb waiting to explode after 200k kilometers, it should have 15k KM interval MINIMUM As a car guy I'd most likely do an oil change every 5000 KM to flush it in a way, then continue with 10k interval...
I agree totaly. They show themselves like petrolheads but Alex really dosent care for his cars . I mean simple google search shows that for chain driven engines oil interval changes are really important.
I was in your shoes a few years ago Alex. Serial BMW owner but with a small child added to the family, unexpected and expensive repairs were something which were no longer on the menu. I decided a Lexus V8 was the best choice for reliability, whilst still being an interesting motor. After much research and scrolling through many car ads, I finally found and bought my V8 barge. A BMW 550i 😁.
The N57 is a very, very reliable engine if you take care of it, especially the single turbo variants. Sounds like you might have a high pressure diesel pump issue or timing chain. If you fix it, the car will easily bring you many more miles. My N57 currently has 400.000km on the clock, starts and runs every time, doesn’t use a drip of oil. Just change the oil every 12k miles at most and you’ll be golden
@@BlatantBurnerAccountno dumbass. It makes sure your vehicle has proper lubrication and parts don’t wear out prematurely. I have a bmw as well as Mercedes diesels. My Mercedes om603 actually cracked the head but you bet I’m not changing my oil past 5k miles.
As a father of a 2 year old boy and a 2 year old Labrador retriever, I would highly recommend either a BMW F25 X3 2.0d/3.0d (the M sport suspension makes it a bit harsh) or if you need extra space then get a BMW F15 X5 3.0d/4.0d with the M Sport package but without the optional air springs. Both vehicles got 5 stars at the NCAP, which made me consider them in the first place as my personal vehicle when I needed to buy one.
So, pretty sure the N57 should have 8 litres in it guys, making your 5 litres very low indeed. Also, stinking of diesel and not having had the DPF removed was probably quite diluted with diesel too from regens. Im confident DPFs and EGRs causing oil dilution and contamination coupled with ridiculous service intervals are to blame to all the failures on these engines.
@@richardcarlssonraa1201 interesting, you'd imagine it would be the same, perhaps the sump I'd slightly different or something in the 535 as mine is definitely just below 8 and it's supposed to be the same engine.
we recently picked up an f10 530d and noticed this wild service interval thing too. was fresh serviced and the next recommended oil service is like 28,000kms. when i open it in ista i see that there's a coding thing for either 12,000km or 25,000km interval option. i'm newer to diesel ownership but i seems common they gunk up oil quick, it's like it has a longer petrol service interval setup for some reason
Fun fact from a 535d f10 owner. The n57 consumes 200g of oil every 1000km (200g every 620miles). If the engine is ran at high rpms this number increases. This means that every 8800km (5500miles) the engine will need a top up. BUT a good rule of thumb would be not to top up but to change the oil entirely, which is actually what BMW recommends. As my f10 is tuned and produces just under 400bhp (it's taken to track days and drag days) I actually follow these guidelines which in turn makes me change my oil 3x a year BUT with 310k km (193k miles) I much prefer routine maintenance over a timing chain snap or rod bearing failure.
A broken BMW, how uncommon 😂 Family vehicle idea: MK3 (2015 - 2023) Skoda Superb Estate, has the family / luxury aspects whilst keeping reasonable economy and reliability, yes it's 'boring' but good value for money in my eyes. Also you could get the 280hp AWD power train for being towing capable and reasonably quick.
Looking forward to Auto Alex in a childproof Toyota Verso haha. Jocking aside, my daily which I use for the school run is a 9 year old, modified Peugeot 208 GTi and it copes fine with two child seats, shopping and B road blasts. The wife's car is a bit more family orientated but even that's only a Toyota Auris. I don't necessarily think people need MPVs and SUVs when kids arrive.
This car would have been fine if Alex would have kept up with maintenance and did the mandatory timing chain replacement after purchase... which is not the case as it seems. I would only skip the latter if it's documented and proven that a quality job is already done. BTW: Reasonable oil change interval on N57 with egr/dpf still in place is 10k km or 6k miles MAX, absolute max.
@Ayedidyae and yet there are many N57 cars driving about with high mileage. Design of the car isn't bad but the engine is let down by long maintenance intervals, excessive EGR use (soot in oil), DPF burning (oil dilution by fuel), all of these 3 are present in all diesels in the last 20 years, so dont come talking that BMW is shit. They all are. There's more - every manufacturer shaves off the last gram of metal on anything they put in an engine, it's often done under the name of improving dynamics but its honestly just saving them money. Oil pressures are turned down to save every last bit of energy and then comes the low-rpm driving, which the normal driving mode is optimized to. Most cars today are shit, snapping chains, cranks and whatnot. I can't recall any brands that don't have issues with their diesels from the past two decades. So turn down your BMW=junk mentality. They are not the only ones. Do you even know any reasons why manufacturers have been turning up with crap like this? No manufacturer gives a damn about their product's reliability after 10-15 years because if they did, they'd go out of business. Bad engines often have nothing to do with bad engineering, it's just economics and environment with some marketing bs, plain and simple. Look behind the curtain.
I just bought a Lexus gs300 55 plate with 132.000 miles and I am loving it, loads of tech amazing v6 engine, reliable (I have put it in a 2 poster ramp and there is not a single leak), and not to bad on fuel about 38mpg on motroway and 30 combined maybe 15 town. Check out some old lexus like the gs 300 or 450h you would love them
I'd rather go with the 430 or 460 if available. The 300 has a bad rep for the engine, though not as bad as the F11. But due to ULEZ he 450h would probably be the best bet. Nice ones should go for 6-7.000 moneys. 357 HP and 500 Nm , while being a V6! Japanese cars need more love on this channel anyways.
@blackknight3830 both ar ulez and the only problem the 300 have and is if it's been neglected is carbon build up. I have got information from people who worked at lexus at the time and told me both are bullet proof as long as they has been service. Later model from the gs300 got a recall for valves springs apart from that all good.
@blackknight3830 A hybrid model usually isn't ideal for towing purposes though. I own a face-lift model 2016 Lexus GS450h, and I had the towing hitch installed when I bought it. It is legally allowed to tow 1500kg, which isn't bad, but in the owners manual, it's not advised to do any towing at all (because the transmission doesn't have an oil cooler). I don't tow more than the entire theoretical load of the car (just a few light boats), so it'll probably be fine. I wouldn't tow cars with it.
My dad had the same car on same plate and I drove it plenty, they're absolutely diabolical to drive. Motorway they're surprisingly economical, but the CVT box is genuinely awful and there's no feel to the steering (yes I know it's an older boaty Lexus but my point still stands 😂) and it was just a horrible driving experience
@liamcastro-wilkins3018 the gs300 does not have a cvt is the gs450 with the 8 speed auto, they are shit for cornering.... it's a massive car but it's a great car to drive everyday, i would not drive a k20 ep3 with coilvers or massive exhaust everyday to work... but they are really fun cars to drive on weekends ;)
I have a 2012 Porsche Cayenne 3.0D which I brought for Dad duties and towing. Had it mapped to 300bhp so plenty fast enough as a daily and pulls my trailer up and down the country with ease. I love it! Also touch wood has been 100% reliable

Alex is the worst thing to happen to the car industry imo. He breaks his cars and can't even be bothered to service his dailies, unless it's for content. Brilliant work.
Judging cars based on their own usage pattern is making manufacturers look bad indeed. If only they handled them with love instead of trying to beat them up
15:23 - His new car is an Aston! Not with that body shape though, unless its a DBX, but that looks like a Macan or an old Cayenne. Also, are we going to see more of Stavros? Next year is the 20th anniversary of the Securitas heist, so if you can get him restored to peak condition, some true crime nutter will pay out the nose for him.
if you ever owned a car which burns oil you notice how much more oil it starts burning after 8k -10kkilometers (around 5k - 6.5kmiles) which shows the oil has lost its viscosity and needs to be changed. 15k miles is crazy interval for oil change
I've had my 535d since brand new (63 plate). It gets serviced every 10k and I just do what needs doing to it. It's never let me down and hasn't put a foot wrong. As Alex says though, it's one of the best cars you'll ever need. Soft close doors and radarcruise control are a dream!!! 😂

@@endzenju Just because the rest of the car died it doesn't mean. It's a moving part. It wears out. It will need replacement at some point. Are you saying there aren't mondeos with chain replacements at lower mileage ? Those 3 litre bmw engines need new oil every 6k after about 40k miles. My 640d was in a bmw specialist garage and they basically said if you don't do that the engine probably won't survive upto 100k. Pretty sure land-rover 4 litre diesel requires the same procedure.

Late 2016 ish Euro 6 Audi SQ5 TDI Plus. Remap it and you're knocking on the door of 400bhp and 650lb/ft, does nearly 45mpg and takes two dogs, two kids, etc and will whistle down the autobahn all day at 150mph. I have one and aside from its voracious appetite for injectors (you'll learn how to replace these in 10 mins), I love it. I say all of this as the proud owner of a 182k miles F11 520d which I also love - but not for the stupid little electrical gremlins it keeps having - otherwise the damn thing is like triggers broom and just keeps bowling along. (also has done multiple autobahn runs at 145mph)
Also props to BMWs diesels coupled with the zf8 because unless I’m wrong no other 2.0 diesel does 150 mph without work to it, but stock 2.0 BMWs will do 149
@Ayedidyae not only would I but I have done several times my Mrs had a 420 for 5 years didn’t let her down once I’ve had a 335d and a 535d plus my X5M50d and none of them let me down either so your “bmw is a terrible daily” Japanese fantasy is just rubbish it’s all about servicing and preventative maintenance if you don’t do that on ANY car including your Yaris it’s going to break down at some point. Not to mention half the breakdowns are caused by regulations fitted hardware such as dpf or egr.
@Ayedidyae that’s not what I actually said though, is it? The n47 does have a big design flaw you are 100% correct however it’s nothing that can’t be sorted by getting ahead of it going wrong, not my favourite engine because it’s so small anyway I’d never run one of them myself. The 3.0 n57 however is a completely different ballgame and is one of the best diesels you can buy. The b58 is a great engine too, you cannot deny that it’s just fact. Tell me of a better diesel and petrol 6cyl and under engine?
@Ayedidyae also it’s quite ironic your reply, saying I’m generalising, there’s no middle ground with us whilst angrily generalising making yourself look unhinged not coming to the conclusion of a sane person which is that I like the n57 paired with the zf8 and rear wheel drive or rear biased 4wd for more reasons than it being a perfect engine which no engine in the world is. It’s about a lot more, I like to drive fast, I like to drift, I like to get good mpg on a run, I like a well balanced car that handles nicely and is a good starting point to be able to modify and get more power out of. You cannot give me a good alternative for a daily driver because there isn’t any that meet all the requirements I have for a daily driver. You could put the most perfect engine in a Toyota and at the end of the day they’d make it an unbalanced mo ng pit fwd soulless bore fest with a CVT gearbox. I’ve had a lot of cars, including loads of Japanese cars too so your little unhinged rant was actually properly funny because it was so wrong. You can’t daily a boxer though, an RB for example, it’s not fun when you have to. A car is more than just its engine it’s the whole package, luxury and tech with power and torque, a gearbox that does exactly what you want and a well balanced chassis. Just so happens that bmw at least used to make those perfectly, for a lot of people. Do Japanese cars go down autobahns a lot at over 160 with no problems? Which ones are as good on track from stock? Not many. Like I said I’ve owned a few so I do know, they tend to be great at one or two things but nothing else. At the end of the day let people like what they like and stop being so invested in trying to prove another engine is better because you like it more, it isn’t. Your opinion has no bearing or value in the eyes of anyone else so buy what you like to drive and let others do the same and be happy (and also quiet) about it.

The N57 takes 8 litres of oil… if you drained 5 litres out, then it’s oil starvation. If you starve the tensioners of oil, this can also snap the chain.
I know you hated your f15 X5 but I’ve had my M50d 5 years and it’s been amazing. Tows like a dream, perfect for kids and the M50d is pretty quick for such a big car
I'll bet thin oil due to dpf regeneration not completing and essentially dumping the excess diesel (from regen) into the oil system. Ask me how I know...

@Ayedidyae lol n47... it's obviously shit, people who actually like BMW's don't drive a crappy 4 cyl diesel. I don't even understand why people would buy a BMW with that engine. Might as well buy another brand, because they won't get to enjoy the car like they would if they had a 6cyl. Btw, I was not saying BMW's are the most reliable, but they are good to drive. And I would rather spend some money on a car I enjoy to drive, than to drive a bulletproof car I didn't like(if that existed, it obviously doesn't anyway)
@Ayedidyae I don't like diesel cars anyway, and even if I did I would not care what some random with 0 taste thinks. So you could never make me feel embarrassed. Keep on trying if you want🤡
I love that miles is your daily again, he deserves to be on the road. What's miles his interior like these days? I remember the front window was leaky and the headliner came off, has that been fixed?
Most definitely get a Skoda Superb estate, even later models won’t break the bank, and there’s a whole raft of engines and 4x4 possibilities. Plus more room than you’ll ever need.
Skoda superb estate 2.0 tdi can’t go wrong great mpg very strong reliable engine plenty of space for the little one and the dog just a recommendation for you love the videos keep it up 👍🏻
I second the volvo V60 suggestion, I have one and it's absolutely great (2011 D5). Pretty quick with 215hp, fairly modern interior, extremely comfortable and I've averaged 49mpg tank to tank since owning it. Being mondeo based it handles worlds better than a v70.
Skoda superb estate! Can tow up to 2 tons, comfortable, cheap to run, has the biggest boot space on the market for push chairs and shopping and dogs! Not the fastest thing in the world but plenty of power for normal life. This is on my list for some thing that's can do every thing well but doesn't excel in any one thing which is exactly what you want a daily driver to do.
BMW x5 m50d isn't a bad shout for a fast, economical daily, comfortable daily. The Volvo XC60 T8 is also a great car, also an Audi SQ5 could be worth viewing.
I believe the high-pressure fuel pump (Bosch CP4) has gone bad. Along with timing chain issues and several other serious problems, it is another weak point of the N57 engine.
I can recommend 2 cars that may be worth looking into for daily driving, one being a Mazda 6 sport estate, and another being a Seat Leon FR estate. My Dad has owned both of these cars over the last 10 years, both of which have been practical, sporty, and fun to drive.
Man, seeing Alex explode that car gave me legit heart palpitations 😂! But hey, it just shows that sometimes the best lessons come from the biggest mistakes. Keep it coming, guys! 🚗💥
Only X3 F25, i have switched for the same reasons from F30. Have a dog, baby, have to drive for hours and honestly this 190bhp 2l diesel is econimical, not super fast but enough for taking over and doing 180 on motorway when needed. Booth space is more than enough. Between Mercedes and Audi this is the best choice
Would love an episode of you rebuilding the top end on this, would hopefully just be a couple of rockers and a chain kit if the valves aren't bent. Chuck it back into the car pool then for towing!
I recently got an awsome deal on a Peugeot 508 SW GT 2012 here in Sweden. I was really chocked on how well this thing drives and how well it holds up. Its an awsome daily driver, has the power when you need it (due to the GT model) to go fast, awsome capabilities on towing and has alot of space both in the boot and for the rear passengers. Its my first french and so far i am really happy with it. They are also very cheap to purchase, rather cheap to maintain if you look towards the competition or atleast here in Sweden but it seems to be the same everywhere in europe aswell when i read about it.
3.6 Skoda Superb Estate. Most are Elegance models as they were the ones the police bought; and who were the main customer for them. I have one and it makes me smile so much.
I picked up a MK7.5 golf R estate. I would highly recommend. 45mpg on a run, 306bhp, 4motion all wheel drive, more boot space than I know what to do with, ULEZ complaint, sounds fruity, looks nice too. Maybe that could be added to your maybe pile.
I have an F10 at 196000 miles, same year as yours Alex. bought it at 7 years ago at 139000 as the second owner. I love the car defo the best for me so far. Touch wood still tickin along. BMW M550d Wagon with its quad turbo diesel. I really wish we got these here in the states, but its fast, practical, reliable (newer ones at least) and relatively economical because its a diesel. Good upgrade from your F-Series wagon and the last generation of properly good looking 5 series in my opinion.
Alex your next daily driver should be an Volvo V60 Polestar. Three litre straight 6 turbo, valved exhaust as standard, 4WD, Volvo reliability and practicality. The last of the crazy Volvo power and rare as hell
Alex get a Ford C Max, Titanium X 2 litre. Short wheel base version. Very reliable, plenty of power, loads of space inside. I know it’s not a BMW, but if you want a very reliable car to drive the young un around in. Doesn’t look terrible and I’m sure you could mod it if you felt the need.

It’s oil starvation. They take 8 litres of oil.

Both vehicles got 5 stars at the NCAP, which made me consider them in the first place as my personal vehicle when I needed to buy one.
09:38 we hear Taylor's starter motor impression
So, pretty sure the N57 should have 8 litres in it guys, making your 5 litres very low indeed. Also, stinking of diesel and not having had the DPF removed was probably quite diluted with diesel too from regens. Im confident DPFs and EGRs causing oil dilution and contamination coupled with ridiculous service intervals are to blame to all the failures on these engines.
In those f10/11 goes around 7l of oil, in older e60 goes up to 9l, but yea, there was only 5-5.2l at best...

we recently picked up an f10 530d and noticed this wild service interval thing too. was fresh serviced and the next recommended oil service is like 28,000kms.
when i open it in ista i see that there's a coding thing for either 12,000km or 25,000km interval option.
i'm newer to diesel ownership but i seems common they gunk up oil quick, it's like it has a longer petrol service interval setup for some reason
Great advice 👍

This car would have been fine if Alex would have kept up with maintenance and did the mandatory timing chain replacement after purchase... which is not the case as it seems. I would only skip the latter if it's documented and proven that a quality job is already done.
BTW: Reasonable oil change interval on N57 with egr/dpf still in place is 10k km or 6k miles MAX, absolute max.
He mentions in the video it'd had a cam chain before he bought it.
BMWs seem to fall apart after 11 years. Built in obsolescence is their game plan 😉
@AyedidyaeYour talking so much nonsense
You might need to check the rotation of the tyre on the OSF

Get a Volvo V70 or Xc70 with the D5 engine. Solid as they get, plus you get all the "wants" that you mentioned at the end, towbar, massive cargospace, supersafe for the whole family. And they are no slouch to drive either!
motorways with no hardshoulders are a danger to the public. I don`t understand what you are supposed to do if your car breaks down, and you are one of those "smart" motorways.
You wait in the lane and then the signs above you (and up to the breakdown) should show the red "x" along with messaging to alert of the breakdown. But the question is whether other motorists read / notice the signs...
@@MaverickTopG exactly! If a moment of distraction takes another driver in your lane, he will probably have other drivers following him too, because they will probably miss the sign and follow the traffic. Then what?
It's a bit too dangerous for comfort. What if you're stranded in the second or 3rd lane? Imagine the chaos!
@@mihaiserbanescu8676 Totally get it. There are lay-bys built into the system too but all it takes is someone's error of judgement to result in a bigger issue
Hmmm 2008 Aston Martin Vantage at 14:59 , maybe Rory's new car.
i deadass mistook for it a mondeo LMAO
1:07 looks at that headrest! 🤢
At least it the right shape for a bmw logo to be stiched into it😅
The guy carts his newborn around in a car that filthy, grim, poor kid
8:52 The inside of the driver's door doesn't look to good either.
🤮
2015 Volvo v60 d6 is the awnser. 280hp 640nm and all the tech you need. (Also 0-100 in 6 sec)
I have a 2016 Acura MDX SH-Awd with 145K miles and has no issues. 7 seaters, bit sporty and really reliable. I would recommend for the dad life.
Acuras do not exist outside of the US
@@Afraz_9n3 True, but something like my UK spec. Japanese made Honda Accord 2.4 has the same body, chassis and engine as the US Acura TSX
@@1maico1 aye that's true you can get UK spec Honda variants
Another vote for a Skoda Superb. If you can get a Mark3 Sportline, 280 buff horses out the box and as others have said a bit of juggery pokery can see that figure increase. Palatial space inside for dog and child paraphernalia.
The true
Shame about the f11 mate.
But on the plus side Myles 😊 nearly as famous as Phil.
Why not get yourself a xc70?!?
Great family wagon, reliable can tow ( not sure on max weight) and its a volvo!
Ours has seen 1 of the 4 kids move out into her own place.
Volvos are so boring though. Only Volvo that is acceptable is the second gen XC90
@@kristianolsenlarsenXC70 is definitely not a boring car IMO.
2001 to 03 xc70s have auto gearbox issues and 2.5t s have a cylinder wall cracking issue if i remeber
I was going to say xc70 as well! Love mine, it's wallowy and the tyres are shit so the slightest bit of rain and you're spinning tyres at every roundabout 😂
Not ULEZ compliant but😢
I STILL think of the video where they discover that 'Miles' was STILL running right on his ORIGINAL head gasket after 450K miles! Feck! But then again, thats the VW 1.9 PD motor for ya! 👌 😎🇬🇧
Thanks for more laughs. Once again demonstrating why BMW means, Bring more wallet, for a lot of people. LOL
bring mich werkstatt (bring me workshop) in Germany
@Ayedidyaeyou're so clueless I actually feel sorry for you
@Ayedidyae lol n47... it's obviously shit, people who actually like BMW's don't drive a crappy 4 cyl diesel.
@Ayedidyae you forget the worst problem with both engines(n47+n57) the Bosch cp4 pump
Get that Honda N22 power and you're set for life, currently looking for a cozy little 3rd gen CR-V myself
You should consider skoda superb 2.0TSI with DSG and 4x4. Great car with a lot of space inside
I love our 2015 octavia scout. Don't like the servicing.
dn't ever ever ever buy one with that engine, aka E888
Most definitely get a Skoda Superb estate, even later models won’t break the bank, and there’s a whole raft of engines and 4x4 possibilities. Plus more room than you’ll ever need.
8:41 Reading the fault code on a lift, could have done that on the highway roadside and saved us all some time, Al.
Skoda superb estate 2.0 tdi can’t go wrong great mpg very strong reliable engine plenty of space for the little one and the dog just a recommendation for you love the videos keep it up 👍🏻
Miles is back!!!!! Great to see this car looking so well!
Not sure what your budget is for the new daily but perhaps a Mercedes?
I know what's wrong with it, aint got no gas in it
Cars run on liquid not gas.
@@davog1946 you live under a rock or what?
@@danpreston2222 this is not “MERICA”. It is you who lives under the metaphorical rock.
@@davog1946 Mine does indeed run on gas (CNG), but that's not very common.
"I loved this car"
"maybe you should've put some oil in it then"
".... shut up"
Nah I don’t believe it, another scripted video 🤦🏻♂️ BMWs don’t break at least make it realistic.
U mad?
@@Jack-os6wzU mad?
true, no BMW has ever failed, ever, in the world.
absolute facts that cannot be denied
Just get a g31 you will love it!!!!!👍
I second the volvo V60 suggestion, I have one and it's absolutely great (2011 D5). Pretty quick with 215hp, fairly modern interior, extremely comfortable and I've averaged 49mpg tank to tank since owning it. Being mondeo based it handles worlds better than a v70.
It's a bit ridiculous/disappointing that a self named car enthusiast channel cant even take care of basic maintenance
I genuinely believe that the only reasonable option to replace the F11 would be a “fresher” 5 Series, a few years newer and with a bit less mileage
Soooo what about a second gen Cadillac CTS? They were fairly good cars, especially if you put proper suspension on them
Would love an episode of you rebuilding the top end on this, would hopefully just be a couple of rockers and a chain kit if the valves aren't bent. Chuck it back into the car pool then for towing!
im so so so glad theirs move bmw content, i was beginning to think this channel might start to branch out to more interesting stuff
Golf GTD mk 7, have one myself. can be really good on milage, its practical, spacious and fun
I have an F10 at 196000 miles, same year as yours Alex. bought it at 7 years ago at 139000 as the second owner. I love the car defo the best for me so far. Touch wood still tickin along. Regularly maintained and serviced. The only thing falling apart is annoyingly the plastics. I will let you know when it blows up lol.
New daily has to be a Superb 280 4x4 estate. Perfect all rounder.
This brought back memories, I absolutely loved my F11 535d and agree it was such a great car.
