    “The godly may trip seven times, but they will get up again.
    But one disaster is enough to overthrow the wicked.
    Don’t rejoice when your enemies fall;
    don’t be happy when they stumble.
    For the Lord will be displeased with you
    and will turn his anger away from them.
    Don’t fret because of evildoers;
    don’t envy the wicked.”

    Buying used rolling stock/locomotives is a way to get a fleet running quick for sure. Hitting a Dollar type store for supplies is good one as well. As normal, Nantucket Blend, 3 spoons of sugar and cream

    During the years that I was working, I had the maintenance department save the suspended ceiling tiles (2X4 type) when they had to replace them. I use them to make rock walls and hills.

    I repurpose packaging foam both the low density filler sheets and the higher density molded like foam coolers and fitted packaging. I do need to make myself a foam cutter. Drinking straws for culverts and loads. Wood and thin plywood drops from my shop for basic materials including the slivers from dado's and rebates. Supports and sprues from 3 d printing for scrap loads and sign posts.

    A good thing to know about 3d printing, is that the prints themselves once set up pay for themselves.
    Buying say a N scale tunnel entrance is like 12 dollars, printing one from thingiverse costs between 5 and 7 cents (fdm printer using some form of PLA) including power costs!
    So after only a few buildings and decor items the printer has basically paid for itself.

      I prefer plaster for tunnel portals and retaining walls so what I am doing is making a mold of the claster casting and making my own. It is much cheaper than buying castings and when done right works well. I think plaster paints and ends looking better.

    Once again Jimmy, great topic and great coffee… I have been scratch building for a very short time ( maybe 9 months), and I think my favorite media is used cereal boxes. But I have used pvc, toilet paper rolls and packaging foam recently and I don’t have many complaints because it’s mostly free. I do think I’m definitely going to start making windows now that I have free material. Great job man.

    I can absolutely vouch for finding deals at train shows. I’ve found a few of the Kato Maxi-IV sets which are normally over $100 for anywhere as low as $75 (I think I did find one lower but I can’t remember) They are also great places to find products no longer being produced, which is how I got my hands on the Broadway Limited set. Vintage stuff is also very common if you’re interested in that.

    Jimmy, I really enjoy these money-saving videos. Like you, I've been using the clear blister-pack plastic for window glazing for a long time. I am also using craft paints (in my case, Apple Barrel Multi-Surface because it is rated for rigid plastics) and have has good results. However, I have only applied them with brushes. You mentioned that you use them in your airbrush, which is something I have not done. Perhaps a video of how you prepare the paints and airbrush them might appeal to a lot of viewers. I know I would really enjoy it. Thanks again for a great channel. BTW, I also save a lot of money by using my 3D printer.

    Hi Jimmy, thanks for informative video. I save money by making my own scenery scatter material. Easiest is floral foam, just run it over a kitchen sieve, and you have a very fine green foam. For heavier foam I use kitchen scourers, remove the scouring pad from foam, and grind up foam with blender and or manual meat grinder. Produces a product similar to woodlands scenics foam. I also make mt own static grasd, using natural fibre rope, unwinding the strands and cutting it to length. For tall field grass, I found some cheap dolls, about the size of a barbie doll, whose hair is long and a straw color. After a haircut, the hair is glued to the layout in clumps, usng a cut up drinki g straw to keep them upright till glue dries. Simply put dot of glue, put some strands of hair in short piece of straw and place over glue.

    Love these money saving tips. I repurpose almost everything. So much so the family checks with me *before* throwing away a box.
    * Cereal box cardboard - internal structural support for cardstock buildings
    * Large markup 'gift kits' after Christmas have lots of basic powders etc.
    * Folded piece of paper becomes a straight edge
    * 12 pack K-Cup boxes as a base for larger structures and supporting Kato track.
    * Salsa jars are just the right depth for a paint brush and mixing just the right amount of paint.
    I drink dark roast black / no sugar grocery store brand K-Cup, (Star Market / Shaws 'Signature' brand)
    I also drink dark roast 'San Francisco Bay' coffee. The 'K-Cups' are disposable.

    Hi Jimmy, I use cheap "miss tints" for paint. You can quite often get high quality house paint miss tinted for 1/4 the price. Also left over rail and cotton thread for fences. Cut rail to scale fence post height, plus 1/2 inch/12mm to mount in layout. Drill say three holes in each piece of rail, thread through the cotton, and when finished glue in place, paint and weather. For scenery, use real dirt, dried and sifted, river sand, again washed, dried and sifted. You can also use dry leaves. put in blender, makes excellent ground cover around trees. Model tree branches can also be made from the real thing. Small tree cuttings can be dried, cut to size, and Woodland Scenics product attached for relatively inexpensive scale trees.

    Good video and advice. We go to local thrift shops and find some good buys there. My brother found 2 Kato HO engines that are DCC for a $100 apiece, the box did not say DCC so that was a bonus buy plus they look like they were new. I am always looking for things to recycle for train layouts makes it fun to do.
    Hope this next year we have some train shows.

    Another one that people tend to overlook is concept sticking to a set of goals. You can waste a lot of money buying locomotives, rolling stock, and other assets that you’ll end up not using on your layout. Plan out your layout. Pick a specific railroad and time period and stick to it so you don’t spend too much on equipment you don’t need. Sticking to a specific railroad and time period not only organizes your efforts but instills discipline. That Pennsy T1 may be temping but if you’re modeling the B&O, you might not need that locomotive. Stuff like that

    All of my rolling stock is previously used. One thing I have found is that the wheel sets don't roll well. I have started taking my crafting sanding sticks and clean up the axle ends. It has improved their rolling and reduced friction a lot. Went from only pulling 8 cars to 16 just this way.

      The great thing about the US rail network is that you can see cars from everywhere. The only specific cars I would buy would be for industries on your layout. Then I like to have 5-10% be the road name of what you run. Rail box /rail hon etc is also a great generic. Weathering cars heavily can make them generic as well. After all of that just fill in. If you run unit trains, try to have those all be your road name. All of these guidelines only apply to the modern era.
