  • Join us for the digital premiere of Rhiannon Giddens with Francesco Turrisi: there is no Other.
Giddens made her MetLiveArts debut last fall with her latest ambitious project, conceived and performed with Francesco Turrisi. This performance is both a condemnation of "othering" and a celebration of the spreading of ideas, connectivity, and shared experience. Tracing the movement of instruments, sounds, and musical language back and forth from Africa, the Arab world, Europe, and the Americas, there is no Other illuminates the blossoming that's possible when culture flows freely between peoples and lands. The Temple of Dendur in The Sackler Wing provided a stunning context for Gidden's virtuosity and raw emotional musicality.
This program is made possible by William H. Wright II and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. Additional support is provided by Douglas Dockery Thomas.
    Credits:
    Rhiannon Giddens, vocals, violin, banjo
    Francesco Turrisi, percussion, piano, accordion
    Jason Sypher, bass

At age 78 and former folk singer (very former) I can safely say that Rhiannon Giddens is one of those rare talents that comes to maturity only with dedication, education, research and tenacity from a mysterious well of creativity in a precious soul.

The treasures only found when you leave the beaten path of format radio and over-processed, over-dubbed, predictable and non-imaginative tunes that are readily available. Thank you Met and Thank you Rhiannon Giddens for giving us music with nuance, beauty, power and history that reveals more than we've ever been taught. And Thank you Francesco for bringing sounds of the Mediterranean and beyond. Fabulous concert.

It's difficult not to be blown away by the sheer talent here. What a hauntingly beautiful voice, combined with such incredible musicianship, coming together in powerful songs. I hope this music reaches the widest audience possible. It's a gift to the world.

Who is playing the upright? He's not too bad himself. At this point I don't think Rhiannon plays with anybody who's not world class.

This has to be one of the best live performances I've ever seen on YT or in person (out of many genres of music too). Seriously incredible.

Saw this show in October 2019 at the Royal Festival Hall in London. Utterly mesmerising. Beyond her myriad talents, Rhiannon is arguably the most vital woman in music today!

I have followed Rhiannon’s rise to fame since her NC days with the Chocolate Drops at a Street jam in Graham one hot night back in early 2000’s. You could hear her remarkable talent, and hoped it would take her far. Here she is “STARDOM”!

I met Rhiannon Giddens in like 2005 or 6 when she came to Bristol Tennessee with the Carolina Chocolate Drops. I got to dance on the stage! I wish she'd come back.

I’m so impressed with Ms Giddens musicality and her dedication to musical history research and I am standing here, like an infant, crying and I can’t decide if it’s the onions I’m cutting or the depression or if she’s just. that. good but I can’t stop listening.

Turrisi's playing reminds of the origins of the stringed instruments!
