    Im using Canon 700D with kit lens and getting great shots of the stars and milky way. It's great how kit lenses are so good. Software improves these shots. I'm using the Pixel 4 smartphone for very high quality astrophotography. Rockonin 14mm f2.8 is cheap and yet it's better than the expensive ones! Even some entry level dslrs can do high quality astrophotography. Smartphones nowadays can do fantastic astrophotography like Pixel 4 Hauwei p20 Oneplus 5. You don't need expensive gear to get fantastic astrophotography shots!
    Expensive gear isn't worth the money!

    I have Pentax cameras with the astrotracker can use my 500mm lens for up to 20 seconds. I also have the Rokinon 20mm1.8 great lens for low light and astrophotography

    Awesome video! New sub! :)
    I have a 70D & looking for my first astrolens. I was looking at the sam/rok 16mm f:2. I read in one of your other comments that you were dissapointed with the sam/rok 16mm f:2.8...did you mean f:2?
    You recommened to another commenter the samyang 24 f:1.4 for apsc. I looked up stitching as I hadn't heard of it. That may help overcome the longer focal length it will have.

      Andy Mckay thanks!! Yeah well I was disappointed with these lenses for dark situations with lots of stars, because of the sharpness. At the lowest f-stop, stars will appear oddly sharp and big, and you get a lot of distortion/coma... I'm using it mainly for semi-bright situation. Although with the f/2, it might me okay by stopping up one stop. What is your next f-stop? :)

    • @AndySomething
      @AndySomething 7 років тому +1

      Thanks for the info. My next fastest f-stop is 3.5; I only have the 18-135 IS STM kit lens. Looking at getting the 50mm f:1.8 which is super cheap and a fast wide(ish) lens.

    • @NightLightsFilms
      @NightLightsFilms  7 років тому

      Yeah good idea! I started up astro with it too :) But Yeah f/3.5 should be sharper and eliminate a bit of coma, and still okay bright for some semi-dark conditions! :)

    Whats the best lens for either Canon T8i or Canon 90D? I mean the best lens not best budget. THE BEST. I need the price to be under 1200$. Also is Canon T8i or Canon 90D good for Astrophotography? Which one between the two is better?

    Hi Adrien, excellent video. I have just bought a Canon SL2 ( 200D), which is not full frame. Is this lens 24mm 1.4 possible to be used with my camera with good results? Thks for your help or anybody's comments here.

      If you're still wondering...
      I think 24mm will be too narrow on APS-C for most things.

      I have owned and been using the Samyang 12mm F/2,8 with my Nikon D750 for almost 2 years. I love this lens and find it hard to swap back to my Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8. I have mainly used this lenses in close quarters landscape work, so really can't offer advice on astro at this stage.

    I am surprised how nobody mentioned the Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 art lens. I've heard that it is one of the sharpest lenses ever made for crop sensor. Can you please share some thoughts about it? Thanks in advance!

  • @aharshephotography
    @aharshephotography 6 років тому

    First of all Superb shots.. I checked you website and it blew my mind. Great work. I was wondering if you can comment on the New Tamron 15-30 F2.8. I bought Samyang so that I can start with some Astro work but then I though if I can return the samyang and sell my Nikon 16-35 F4 and just get the Tamron. I am in dual minds for a while now and any comments will be highly appreciated!

    • @NightLightsFilms
      @NightLightsFilms  6 років тому

      Akshay Harshe thanks! Well what sigma lens do you possess? The Tamron lens is supposed to be quite decent but again it depends if you wanna be able to use your lens for astro only or both day time and astro :) in The latter case you should consider the Tamron, but if you want astro only I think Samyang is your best option (I wouldn’t know about Nikon) :)

    • @aharshephotography
      @aharshephotography 6 років тому

      Hi Adrien thanks for your reply, Unfortunately I do not own any Sigma yet. I saw that you mainly shoot canon and sony so understandable. I bought Samyang 14 keeping just astro/Night photography in mind and my 16-35 is dearly to me for my landscape work(but not as sharp as Tamron as people say) Tammy seems like an all in one package plus more space in my backpack 1 lens instead of 2(Not the weight though :P) but the downside is, I will need to buy expensive filters and adapters.

  • @thevelointhevale1132
    @thevelointhevale1132 7 років тому +1

    Cheers Adrien - the Samyang/Rok 24mm is fine for Full Frame as a winner but which lens would you say is equivalent Winner on APS-C Crop? I'm agonising at the moment over a choice for my Canon 80D and have just returned a bad copy of the Rokinon 14mm f2.8. I am carefully looking at the Sam/Rok 16mm f2.0 vs Tokina 11-20mm f/2.8 - they both have their problems and are not perfect. Any thoughts?

    • @NightLightsFilms
      @NightLightsFilms  7 років тому +1

      Hi Thanks for your comment! Yeah it was an omission in my video, but the Samy/Rok 24mm f/1.4 is also for APS-C, if you check on their website: www.samyanglensglobal.com/product/detail.do?SQ=11, so it's also compatible with your 80D I'm sure. So your nightmare is over! :=)

    • @thevelointhevale1132
      @thevelointhevale1132 7 років тому

      Hi Adrien - I'm more concerned with the angle of view of the 24mm though - it is a Full Frame angle of view so true 24mm for Full Frame which means it ends up as something like 38mm angle of view on APS-C. I'm wanting to stay ultra wide for my Astro work to that I can have foreground interest and sky together. 16mm in APS-C is really about as long as I want to go.

    • @NightLightsFilms
      @NightLightsFilms  7 років тому

      Oh ok! But it all depends on what you want to do with your astrophotos. I was exactly in the same thinking process as you in the beginning, owning a 70D, I bought the saymang 16mm f/2.8. I got highly disappointed with it, and as a rule all ultra wide angle lenses. I'd much rather shoot with a little bit longer focal length, and make a stitch picture out of it. It's a bit more work, but it beats any ultra wide angle lens. You gain in everything: sharpness, quality, light (as your aperture can now be widened), no distortion nor vignetting... But I guess it depends on what you want to do! For quick astrophoto, I guess your option is the best. Then you might want to look into Canon UWA lenses, maybe they're better than samy/Rok in terms of distortion and vignette, although pricier! :)

    How do you think the Samyung 24 F1.4 competes against the well loved Zeiss Baetis 25mm F2. Of course the retail cost is almost double but you can pickup a baetis 25mm now for $900 though that’s still 400 bones more for a brand new Samyung 24 F1.4..... curious on thoughts in my attempt to fill this hole that so have had for TOO long now. Thanks a lot!!

    Thank you this was suoer helpful, but Which camera body do you find is best for astrophotography, Canon, Nikon, Sony ? I've heard that bot Nikon and Sony have noise reduction algorithms that end up removing stars, do you know anything about this or even if it's still current information anymore? Thanks for your help in advance.

    Great vids - Just subbed! Although I think when comparing the Rokinon 12mm f2 Vs the sigma 14mm f1/8 the Sigma is nearly 4 x as much as the Rokinon. Unless the Sigma glass is 4 x better (even though the F stop is much larger) I think for the price I know what I have just picked! :)

    • @NightLightsFilms
      @NightLightsFilms  7 років тому

      Thanks Ben! Yes I think you're right. Although the 12mm f2 is for APS-c only if I remember correctly, there is nothing else below 24mm that is below f2.8 for full frame as of right now. 14mm f/1.8 is the first and only one. I have just received it today, and I will do a review shortly, but yes it is super pricey!!

    Secondly, I'm thinking to buy a super wide angle lent. I loved the sigma 8 - 16 mm, but seeing this video I realized it's f/4,5-5,6. So it shoud not be ideal for astrophotography. I really doubt what super angular lent shoud I buy. What do you think? Anh good experience with super angular lenses?

    • @druizal8963
      @druizal8963 6 років тому

      Yes Adrien, from what I read so far it could be the "ultimate" astro lens (the lowest coma in the market?), but I'm concerned with another issue: this lens only comes with Canon or Nikon mounts, and I'm about to change system for the Sony a7iii (I was Canon until now, but very disappointed by the 6D mkii).
      So is this lens as good as they say... even with an adapter (Metabones or Fotodiox)? I'm now torn between getting that Samyang XP 14mm f2.4 with Canon mount and an adapter, or getting the good old Samyang 24mm f1.4 with Sony mount (no adapter hassle).
      The 14mm is super wide, making it better than 24mm for longer exposures without star trailing BUT f1.4 lets almost twice the light in vs f2.4
      What do you think?

    • @NightLightsFilms
      @NightLightsFilms  6 років тому

      D RuizAl well to be honest I’m quite done with Samyang. If you don’t get them bad, they will eventually get bad (have you heard about this issue?). I’ve lost 4 Samyang lenses over the past year to that focus ring issue, and there’s nothing you can do about it (I’ve had the problem with the 24mm and 14mm). Samyang lenses are awesome but they’re crap quality. I’ve switched to art lenses. The sigma 24 or 20 f1.4 are a bit worse for coma than Samyang but at least they’re good quality. And yes I’ve tried the sigma 14mm with meta ones and other adapters, it works like a charm. But it’s really up to you :)

I know you were not reviewing the lenses for Nikon, but I figured based on your knowledge you could tell me which would be a better lens with respect to corner sharpness, and other criteria you were assessing the lenses. I would not think the quality of lenses would change if they are build for Cannon or Nikon. Thank you again.

    Sadly you left out Nikon lenses.
    Many of us who have been photographers for decades use Nikon or Canon cameras. These two camera systems have huge numbers of available lenses, both new and used (over 50 years of used Nikkor lenses and about 30 years of used Canon EF lenses).
    Working pros use Nikon and Canon stills cameras and have a good stable of lenses and probably to not need to add any more photographic lenses when entering into astrophotography. The number of available used lenses is important since the manual focus lenses are best when shooting astrophotography so while Sony has a decent following, they have few lenses available new or used., they still represent a small percentage of the total number of cameras being used (Nikon and Canon cameras occupy over 70% of APS-C and full frame cameras used in today's market
    The fact that the current Sony APS-C and full frame cameras are mirrorless is an attraction to some but the number of photos which can be taken on a fully charged battery is less than a third of the images on a fully charged battery than either Nikon or Canon cameras. Indeed, the number RAW images which can be taken using my Nikon cameras are from 1200 to 3400 on a fully charged battery. When spending 8 to 10 hours a night shooting long exposures of the night sky, batteries with "legs" is an important attribute to consider when adapting a stills camera for astrophotography (ie replacing the stock sensor filter with a full spectrum filter or H-Alpha filters as well as some kind of heat reduction system added to a dedicated astrophotography camera.
    I am sure you are aware that all the stills cameras aboard the International Space Lab supplied by NASA are Nikon
    That said, I want to thank you for taking the time both in research and production of your UA-cam videos.

    You said to remember 500 rule .i dont see relation as ull be shutting from a tripod

      Yes but even shooting on a tripod, if you let your shutter open too long, you will start noticing star trails on your camera as the sky moves (actually the Earth moves, but we don't feel it).

      Remember, with longer focal length lenses you are focusing in on a smaller part of the sky and filling the entire frame with that. So consequently small movements in the same time frame as the wide field view are 'magnified'.In order to compensate for that, exposure time has to go down as the focal length (zoomed in area) goes up.

    Good job anyway I'm surprised you did not mentioned samyang 14mm 2.4 xp, sigma 20mm 1.4 art, Canon 35mm 2.0 is, and the old canon 135mm 2.0

      Christophe Carriere hi Christophe! Thanks :) yes the samyang 14mm 2.4 is good too but you only gain one stop compared to 2.8 so I included it with the rest. Like I said in the tutorial the list is far from being comprehensive but there are to me way better lenses than canon 35 f2 or 135 f2 for having tested them this summer! :) and yes the sigma 20mm f1.4 is also very nice but I remember getting some serious coma in the edges wide open?

    Question: How is 50mm f/1.4 from Canon for astrophotography?

    • @NightLightsFilms
      @NightLightsFilms  7 років тому +1

      Motiur Rahman I haven't tested it myself but I've seen reviews that say you get a lot of coma. I've tested the 50mm f1.2 and the coma was terrible even at 2.8!!

      I have the Canon 50mm F1.4 on a crop sensor Rebel T7i (which makes it an 80mm lens). My first tests were at f1.4, manually focused with live view at 10x, 5 second shutter since more gave me star trails. I agree that the coma is pretty bad. Stopping it down may help but that seems like a waste of a 1.4 lens.

      I've had poor results and prefer my Rokinin, it's definitely a good price point and was well worth the investment
