      Thanks a lot Alistair, except for my silly French accent that might be annoying at some point! Sometimes I get annoyed myself haha :) I'm happy it was useful!

    Great Video my friend. I'm glad I bought at 6D 2 years ago to do Astrophotography . I guess the guy at the camera store was right. He told me this is a great camera for low light.
    What camera would you suggest as being number 1 for Astrophotography in 2020 and where does the 6D rank compared to the new camera.
    Many Thanks
    Kind regards Sean

      kinda late, but from what i can tell, the 6D would be my first choice in HINDSIGHT. I bought a used A7S for it and it's GREAT, but over 30 second exposures and it's kinda usless due to the star eater noise algorithm. 6D is going to be great for longer, tracked exposures

    Dear Adrien, thank you for such a great job! I think the best explanation about noise in astrophotography I've seen at UA-cam.... Few questions related to this topic.
    Do you think full spectrum astromodification will improve significantly SNR? Is it make sense for wide field astrophotography?
    By the way you missing Pentax DSLRs in your list of recommended cameras. Is the a reason for it?

    I'm grateful for this.
    Where can I learn about the desirability of using a Canon 1DX II for astrophotography? Specifically, how it compares with the 5D IV? Thank you.

    • @NightLightsFilms
      @NightLightsFilms  7 років тому

      Jim Keener thanks Jim. Mmmm I’m actually not sure about that since I haven’t tried either. One of my fiends has the mark IV for Astro, but he get a lot of noise, still better than the 5d mk III... but you also will with the 1DX. I would prefer the 5D mk IV to be honest. The former has so many pixels that you will get extreme noise rapidly!

  • @runzelranz
    @runzelranz 7 років тому +1

    This was very helpful. As I understood, using a tracker will give you a better SNR but an increase in hot pixels due the longer exposure time. So what's worse?

    • @Chris-St-DE
      @Chris-St-DE 6 років тому +1

      Hot pixel can be easily removed in software.

    if i may mkae a suggestion for a video. im fairly new to atrophotography and im shooting with a canon 80D, aps-c sensor. and im not sure if an upgrade to a FF camera would be a noticable imrovement and how much of a difference does it acutally make when shooting the nightsky?
    can you make direct comparison? same locations, same lens, same settings. just to have a 1:1 noise comparison from crop to fullframe sensor.

    Thanks for the review. Coma was my big worry and I already have the Zeiss 15mm but after watching this and reading some other reviews I will get the lens this week (will maybe sell the Zeiss). I work in Scandinavia during the Winter as an aurora photography guide so mine will get a lot of use. Looking forward to that first big corona and being able to get some really quick shutter speeds :)

      Hey Oliver! Thanks for the comment! You probably meant to write on my Sigma 14mm review video though? Anyways, yes I haven't tried the Zeiss and I like to test it out myself first before making any comment on it, but I can 100% recommend this one!! Can't wait for you ti buy it, and hoping to see some of your pictures!! Do you have a website or social media I could contact you on, I got some questions about your job! :)

      Hi Adrien, yes I meant to do that on the other video! Not sure how that happened! My web site is www.oliverwrightphotography.com there should be some social media links on there too.
      Feel free to ask any questions!

      Thanks Antonio! No I haven't, but I heard a lot of good things about it, especially its low light abilities. If course my list is biased, and I'm sure there are other good cams out there, but I'd love to try it one day! :)

    BRilliant video. The only correction I would suggest is something you claims but complicating it. The first time you mentioned APSC you just mention they are smaller. At the second time you said the APSC sensor is smaller but take care with the pixel count. The way to unify it it just mention that the bigger pixel the better or the smaller the pixel density the better.

    What tracker brand do suggest for an enthusiast with a canon 5D Mk IV and a Rokinon 24mm f 1.4?

    • @NightLightsFilms
      @NightLightsFilms  7 років тому

      Well you can look into iOptron sky guider or sky tracker, Vixen also makes good and transportable ones like the Vixen Polarie, those are good for short and transportable tracking while using relatively light gear like a DSLR and a single lens (have used iOptron sky tracker and vixen polarie) :) Hope this helps!

    Super well explained... I will share this tonight, when arrive home. Thank you!!
    BTW, I thought the Sony stars eating problems were with the new Sony cameras, not with the first Sony A7s... I have that one and never had the problem (maybe I have not noticed :D ).

    • @NightLightsFilms
      @NightLightsFilms  7 років тому +1

      Thanks a lot Marina! Well with the Sony a7s, if you have the old version of the firmware, you're good. I have the latest version, and the only possibility for me not to get the algorithm is to shoot outside the BULB mode, so in silent shooting mood... But for all other cameras in the alpha series, there's no chance whatsoever!! :)

    • @MilanKarakas
      @MilanKarakas 7 років тому

      Well explained. But, your last sentence "...there's no chance whatsoever...", I have plan to buy Sony A6300 for all purpose camera, but also from time to time for astrophotography. Is that the case with that camera too? Thank you in advance for your answer.

    Hey Adrien, which level of ISO do you think is the best with A7RII? in the video i see it is 1600.

    • @NightLightsFilms
      @NightLightsFilms  7 років тому

      def. ISO 1600 on super 35 and probably around 2500/3600 in crop mode. Actually for the former I would say 400-800, because it just takes some haze or airglow to noise up the entire frame, even though this stupid algorithm processes noise in a very different way from Canon!

    Hi Adrian, thanks for putting in so much of your research in one video. It is very helpful for me who is looking to start doing more astrophotography. I am planning on getting my old camera d5200 astromodified as a first step to capture the colours of night sky.. what do you think about it? In general this camera is not good with high iso.. do I think it is still worth it? I also have a d850 and it was great at capturing auroras, love it. But not ready to get it astromod.. let me know your thoughts..

    • @NightLightsFilms
      @NightLightsFilms  5 років тому

      Hi Ankit! Glad you liked the vid! :) Well it all depends on what you want to do, but don't be afraid to astromod! I don't know why a lot of people are somehow afraid they won't be able to take the same pictures anymore. But you can try it first on your old as you said. You should be able to do decent deep-sky with it! :)

    • @AnkitChintapali
      @AnkitChintapali 5 років тому

      Maybe because of lack of knowledge I am afraid to astromod my d850.. I don’t know if I will be able to view images on the backscreen of camera with accurate white balance and colours after it is modified. Because I do a lot of daylight photography and depend on live view. Is there any in camera plug in IR filter that I can fix for day time usage and for the night I can just take it out..?

      Awesome website and channel Troy, I'll subscribe for sure! In the mean time, I have a bunch of other tutorials where I explain which lenses I use and how I can get such clear skies as I mentioned. For example you can watch: ua-cam.com/video/IgmUpfel6bU/v-deo.html. You can also make your way to www.adphotography-online.com where I have all my gems :) In the mean time, I can list a few that I use: Sigma 14mm f/1.8 (it's become my favorite wide angle, so sharp: samples: ua-cam.com/video/CBtDmQZbFzg/v-deo.html), sigma 24mm f/1.4 or Samyang 24mm f/1.4, Sigma 50mm f/1.8, Samayng 85mm f/.1.4, Samyang 135mm f/2. Don't hesitate to contact me for more!!

  • @logo80
    @logo80 5 років тому

    Nice one! Except for the fact that the size of the sensor doesn't affect the noise of the picture (even if usually bigger sensor means bigger pixels... but it's not always the case). Thanks for all the information though!

    • @NightLightsFilms
      @NightLightsFilms  5 років тому

      Lorenzo Bregant Thanks for the input! I actually have to disagree. The size of the sensor does play a big role on the noise, mostly indirectly. Bigger sensors (full frame) take in more light, also more pixels on the sensor means more difficult to fill them up. Remember the noise and signal do play together, so less light ultimately means more noise. I can assure you that if we took the test, the best noise performance will be the full frame sensor with the least pixels... at least for on-chip read noise!

    • @logo80
      @logo80 5 років тому

      Still not agree. In fact the best sensor for low light is a Sony once with only a few mp resolution due to the big pixels on it.

    • @NightLightsFilms
      @NightLightsFilms  5 років тому

      Lorenzo Bregant what is that Sony you are talking about?

    • @logo80
      @logo80 5 років тому

      It’s not a camera sensor. Just something developed for scientific application. Btw to prove this just think at light meters... if it’s about the sensor size they should change values for any sensor size...

    • @NightLightsFilms
      @NightLightsFilms  5 років тому

      Lorenzo Bregant PS that’s exactly what I’m saying in my comment if you read it correctly ☺️☺️
