My favorite historical crazy was a Scottish gentleman who's wife smuggled him out of an English prison dressed as a woman. She and two other women went into the cell at various times, bringing in dress, and undergarments, there were at least three "women" in the cell at any given time. When he was out, his good wife told the gaurds that he wanted to pray, and to please not bother him for at least an hour.

Something similar happened in Mexico in the 90s. An American man was arrested in Mexico and his girlfriend visits him every week * disguised as a man disguised as a woman * and announced that they were "getting married" (a way of saying they were having sex ) to have more time alone to themselves. After months of doing that, one day the girlfriend brought a change of clothes in her bag for herself and left earlier with regular visits and left her the costume with the boyfriend. The police did not see the girlfriend leave because she hid among the other women who came to visit her relative and they ignored the man in a wig and makeup because for them it was simply a regular visit.

My favorite history moment is the „Kappler Milch Suppe“ (The milk soup of Kappel) during some religious war (catholics vs. Protestants) in Switzerland the two armies met in Kappel, a valley. When they met, they decided that they didn’t want to fight, so instead they made a big pot of milk soup and sat together and broke bread and ate soup.

Or on the opposite end of the spectrum, the Kettle War.

Oh no I almost forgot "The Ballet of the Bum". Irishmen learning that a hoard of Vikings was coming went out into a swamp marking the safe path, so when the Vikings came towards them, they stopped at the edge of the big. The Irishmen dropped their pants, and mooned the invaders. The Vikings weren't too happy about that, and ran into the bog after the Irish, and they got stuck and sunk into the bog.

Flashing/mooning yourself was a way to humiliate an enemy in Gaelic Irish culture. It traces back to pre-christian beliefs and continued into the Elizabethan era. There’s a castle in Bandon, Co. Cork, Ireland with an image of a woman flashing her genitals. It’s called a Sheela na Gig. There are hypotheses that it was meant to ward off evil.

I remember when that assassination attempt of Jean Chrétien happened. It was 1995. The story on Reddit is embellished though. Neither Aline, nor Jean, beat André Dallaire with a statue. They locked themselves in their room and he didn’t attempt to get inside. One of them did hold a statue just in case, but there was no pummelling.

On the topic of the Olympics. In 1912 it was held in Stockholm. One of the games was a marathon held during a scorching hot day. The competitors was mostly not prepared for the race, and used gear that by todays measures would be laughable. Well, one of the competitors was this Japanese guy that decided to ditch the race. If I remember the story correctly he stopped to have a glas of berries juice in someone’s garden. 😅 But he returned to Stockholm some 50 years later to finish his race. “On 20 March 1967, Shiso Kanakuri (Japan) completed a marathon in Stockholm, Sweden, that he had started in 1912. His finish time of 54 years 246 days 5 hours 32 minutes 20.3 seconds represents the longest time to complete a marathon.”

Some don’t have to imagine. Since I’m a night owl, my ex-husband and I slept at weird hours. He would always get pissed when I “see things” crawling around the house. We’ve had carpenter ants, scorpions, a garden snake, and some raccoons invade because he thought I was “seeing things”, but then if I told his mom he’d believe her. He’d get the issue fixed and apologize TO HIS MOM that he didn’t notice. One night I walked into the bedroom and saw the Godzilla of spiders above the headboard. Again, I tried to tell him, he shooed me away calling me crazy so I let a spider crawl above my ex-husband’s head while he was in bed. I let my sweet baby Liam Neeson (one of our chunky black cats-23 lb) play with the spider. My ex told me to get my crazy ass out while he was sleeping. 😈 He wasn’t sleeping for long! When all the ruckus stopped I opened the door and Liam came out triumphantly with the spider in his mouth. Liam got several treats after that.

After several attempts and 10,000 rounds of ammunition used, the 'war' was deemed a failure because the number of Emus that was killed was too small.

    Joe Medicine Crow.
The last war chief of the Crow nation (passed away in 2016, may he rest in peace), he accomplished all four of the achievements needed for this during WWII.
    1. Lead a successful war party on a raid. He was only a private, but his superior officer instructed him to take a team of seven men to get some dynamite from a captured American position to blow up German fortifications. This would involve fighting through barbed wire, bullets, and artillery fire. "If anyone can do this, it's probably you." He pulled it off and blew a hole in the Siegfried Line (which was basically Germany's version of the Maginot Line, but it actually worked). He was one of the first soldiers to set foot on German soil.
    2. Take an enemy's weapon from him. He got separated from his platoon during a flanking maneuver, and ended up literally running into a German soldier. He crashed into the guy so hard he dropped his gun.
    3. Touch an enemy without killing him. Right after this, he immediately dropped his own gun and got into a fistfight with the enemy soldier. He choked the guy until he started crying for his mother, then let go of his throat and took him prisoner.
    4. Steal an enemy's horse. This one's the really crazy one. He didn't just steal one... he stole fifty. While behind enemy lines, they came across a farm where some German officers were holed up, along with about fifty thoroughbred racehorses. Joe, not wanting the horses to get hurt, asked for permission to do something about that. He got the ok, so he snuck in, hopped onto the best horse bareback, and took off with all of them all while singing a Crow war song. The soldiers were so caught off guard that they couldn't get any effective shots off.

I think my favorite is Geoffery Tandy, a cryptogamist (guy who studies algae) who was hired by the British government during WWII. Mr. Tandy still wanted to do his part for the war though, so even after he figured out the mistake he kept quiet.
Good thing too, because the Brits torpedoed a German U-boat that had some important documents aboard. In order to make use of them,, the Brits needed someone who knew how to handle delicate wet materials - like a cryptogamist

I'm pretty sure there's a plaque about this somewhere on Yonge St near College St. So it probably happened around there somewhere.
Edit: Checked it out and I am wrong. The plaque is at King and Jarvis, which is where the brothel used to be. You're right - the fight was on a green space along the water, so basically, on Lakeshore Blvd E.
That same fire brigade had previously shown up to a fire at the same time as another brigade. Back then there was no centralized fire department - just volunteer brigades who served on a first-come gets to fight the fire. The two brigades got into a brawl about who would fight the fire while it burned.

I don't usually call myself a history buff because when people think of history buffs, they usually think of people who mostly focus on wars.
This. This is the history I love. The absurd shit. The stuff that sounds straight out of fiction novels.
If you like strange and unique history, I recommend Tom Scott's old show "Citation Needed". Especially the last few seasons that had a live studio audience. It's a delight and filled with interesting history.

the Olympic race honestly deserves a movie as there’s a lot of details he didn’t list
    - after the 4th racer lost money on the River boat casino, the guy hitch hiked and walked to the race
    - the reason racer 4 ate the rotten apple was that he hadn’t eaten for 40 hours prior to the race
    - the guy in the car actually admitted he took the car, got banned from marathons for life, and began saying he was joking
-racer people complained that racer 9 “could’ve done better.” As if he wasn’t chased a mile off the track by wild dogs.
-one racer finished the race, despite his stomach being cut open by all the dust he inhaled
    - marathons were almost permanently banned from the Olympics as a result of this
-and the guy in the car was still one of the slowest Olympic race times ever recorded
    - out of 40 racers only 14 finished, out of the others, 17 racers never finished, and 8 racers died
And many more catastrophic events happened

Okay where can I find that thumbnail. Also I know of one, the Rozwadow Outbreak. A pair of doctors in Rozwadów, Poland in WWII used dead proteus bacteria to fake typhus infections from 1942 to 1945. The patients were unharmed from the infection, but the Germans kept the area quarantined and kept a skellington crew the town as they were afraid of the infection. No Jewish patients were infected as they would have been immediately executed and those living with them. This created a safe haven for the Jewish in Poland as they faced less persecution there and no one was deported from the town in fear of potential infection spreading. One of the doctors with his family fled town in 1943 in fear of being found out while the other one fled with his family in 1945 when a German patient of his informed the doctor that they were on a Gestapo hit list when the eastern front closed in on Poland. It is believed that they saved over 8,000 people.

I'm surprised Charles Lightholler is not in this video. The dude has the most epic life. Amongst the best parts :not only survived the titanic as the most senior, officer to have survived, but he also survived quite a few incidents when he was in the British navy like storms, ships going down or catching on fire, almost died of malaria. He also participated in the gold rush in klondike but failed so ended up as a cowboy, he lost all his belongings and had to go home by riding the rails illegally. He served during wwi which wasn't even luckier for him because he was on the oceanic when it sank but he did do some brave shit.
He then finally retired.. Well almost he bought a boat the sundowner and at the beginning of WWII he and his wife being old used his boat to spy on the Germans and to top if all he was part of the little ships that went to save soldiers stuck in Dunkirk and carried 144 men on his tiny ass ship across the manche.

My favorite that as far as I know has not been made into a show or movie is the voyage of the Beagle (Charles Darwin). Might seem boring off the bat, but there are a few aspects to keep in mind: Darwin was in his mid 20s, you'll start to see why this is important soon; he joined the expedition as the expert geologist, but decided he wanted to stick his nose in everything; the voyage was meant to map the coast (travel from port to port by the Beagle), Darwin decided he wanted to travel by land when possible and meet the Beagle at the next port..... something that lead to many interesting situations.
Some of those interesting situations: Darwin describing the taste of the different animals he ate such as puma, trying (and often failing) different activities the locals were known for like managing to get himself tangled on the bola he was trying to through, falling while hiking mountains that were out of route because he insisted on climbing pretty much every single one he saw (at one point he described how climbing down was his favorite part because a fall would still take you in the correct direction), having to mail himself out of a town that was held by guerrilleros..... Honestly it is a fun read.

The origin of the heart symbol ♥️ is quite.. interesting. The ancient Greeks had access to a plant called Silphium, which they overused to extinction, because of its ability to induce abortion. It was only able to be grown in an area of North Africa, Cyrenaica. The seed for this plant is where the ♥️ shape comes from. It can even be found on coins minted at the time.
Interested how this became the symbol for love. 😂

My favorite is "The Great Emu War" in Australia in 1932, which lasted less then a month and the humans lost to those giant flightless birds 🤣 On the 2nd of November 1932 the military traveled to Campion in Western Australia, where some 50 emus had been seen. The birds were out of range of the guns, so the locals attempted to herd the emus into an ambush. However the birds split into small groups and ran so that they were difficult targets. The first series of shots fired was ineffective due to how far away the Emus were. A second round of gunfire was able to kill “a number” of birds. Later the same day a small flock was encountered, and “perhaps a dozen” birds were killed. On the 4th of November the Aussie Army had prepared for an ambush near a local dam and over 1,000 emus were spotted heading towards their position. This time they waited until the birds were at point blank range before opening fire. The gun jammed after only 12 birds were killed and the remaining Emu’s scattered before more could be killed. In the days that followed the army chose to move further south where the birds were “reported to be fairly tame”. By the 8th of November, only 6 days into the war, 2,500 rounds of ammunition had been fired. Considering so many shots were fired the emu casualties were not great. The number of birds killed is unclear: one account claims just 50 birds, but other accounts range from 200 to 500. Fortunately the military had not suffered any casualties at the ‘hand’s’ of the Emus, according to the official report anyway.

11:03 Actually Boris Godunov did take the throne... He was a tsar for 7 years. But his reign was accompanied by ravaging famine and also due to that he wasn't directly related to the previous ruling dynasty the people thought of him as "false tsar". That's mostly why False Dmitry had such a success (before the canon frying incident ofc).

James Garfield didn't even want to be president, he was initially asked to do a speech for another man to run for president. One of the representatives decided that he liked Garfield better than the man he was trying to introduce. It took like 2 days but he became the write in candidate and kept trying to tell people not to vote for him.

Puyol-Garcia once sent a report very late at night for information that was all accurate but delayed artificially to the point it couldn't be useful.
He didn't get a response till the next morning as his German handler fell asleep ... So he rebuked his handlers commitment to the cause and said he couldn't tolerate such sloppiness. The Germans responded by assigning more handlers to him (diverting them away from real operatives) and sending him some of their best encryption code books, which of course went straight down to bletchly park
