Pastor, you have no idea how much my inner man needed this. I have made myself so angry to Abba because I keep saying, "Where's my husband?" I have all these desires in me I need fulfilled, Why are both my moms' sons mentally ill? When will you separate me from these people to stop accusing you of wanting me to be around such destructive people...But God is taking me through a journey, I need to not just be a reader of the Word, but a doer. This sermon was so targeted to me, I have to say, Thank God for your ministry feeding me and helping me in my spiritual growth. Sorry for the long comment, but I had to share. Thank you, Pastor Preston xx

Being spiritually stuck is a spiritual appetite issue God desires each of us to be constantly moving forward
A. Physical man was created for spiritual food. Because we are physical beings, God often uses physical things to teach us spiritual truths Deuteronomy 8 - feeding manna to teach that people do not live by bread alone. 1. Man was created with a spiritual appetite in his soul 2. Man’s flesh will eat anything to satisfy every craving. We will always take the easy way even if its back into slavery 3. The Creator of man created the perfect meal plan for man. Jesus quotes this when responding to Satan’s temptations, “Man does not live by bread alone”. Jesus taught disciples to pray for their daily bread in order to be satisfied B. Man has three levels of appetite: 1. The appetite of the lost - an appetite where anything will do, and much is consumed but nothing seems to satisfy 2. The appetite of the saved/believer - an appetite where Christ is a person’s ultimate satisfaction but their flesh still has all too many consistent cravings which, at times, seems to control them. Ephesians 4:21-23 Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, 22 throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. 23Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. 3. The appetite of the mature / maturing follower of Jesus - where Christ alone satisfies your soul because fleshly cravings are consistently crucified and constantly coming up short. You have tasted enough of the good stuff and the “cheap” stuff doesn’t satisfy anymore. This is an ongoing work. Galatians 5:16, 24 So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. 24 'Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. ' C. A lack of spiritual food brings problems 1. Emptiness - the problem of the lost. There is a void of the soul without Christ. It is the human condition before being saved. It is normal to have this void because they are incomplete. This is constant feeding on the world yet never being full, always looking for more. “For what good is it to a man if he gains the whole world, yet loses his soul?” 2. Garbage - the problem of the saved/believer - when they are not getting enough spiritual food. Anytime your spirit starves spiritually, your flesh will want to feed sinfully, on the low hanging fruit. When the Holy Spirit tells you to pray, read, etc. it is telling you that you need to eat, to be filled up spiritually. Galatians 5:17 The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. It is always easier to satisfy the flesh than to do the harder work to feed the spirit. I.e. If you were to eat fast food for every meal because its easier, what would you look like physically? If you are regularly eating spiritual food, your soul will be healthier. Proverbs 27:7 A person who is full refuses honey, but even bitter food tastes sweet to the hungry. If you’re eating junk food spiritually, you don’t have an appetite for anything else. 3. Lack of energy - the problem of the mature christian. When your blood sugar is too low because you are not eating regularly, you get tired. Same with spiritual food. We are designed to have regular meals on a daily basis in order to maintain strength, energy and health. In Matthew 24-26, Jesus expresses concerns about his church being sleepy in the last days. We have tasted the finer things, but have allowed ourselves to be too sleepy when he needs us to be awake. I.e. the bridegroom was delayed and all 10 virgins (the church) fell asleep; in the garden, the disciples fell asleep after Jesus told them to stay awake and pray. If we are not feeding our spirit, we will be too spiritually tired to do what God asks us to do D. God delivers man’s spiritual meal plan to his soul’s doorstep - we don’t have to do a task list. 1. The Son of God - the spiritual food for the lost. Jesus said “I am the bread of life”. He is the spiritual food and no one will ever be hungry again if they feed on Jesus. He becomes our primary satisfaction. 2. The Word of God - the spiritual food of the believer. It is milk and meat. The more work you are doing for the kingdom of God, the more milk we need to be drinking from the Word. i.e. protein shakes are the best food for muscles after a workout. When people sit down with us, they don’t us, they don’t need our perspective or our wisdom, they need God’s word spoken to them. The Word of God always leads to more hunger for God. 3. The Will of God - the spiritual food of the mature believer. Not just reading the word of God, but doing it. John 4:31-34 Meanwhile, the disciples were urging Jesus, “Rabbi, eat something.” But Jesus replied, “I have a kind of food you know nothing about.” “Did someone bring him food while we were gone?” the disciples asked each other. Then Jesus explained: “My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing his work. Jesus shows us what it looks like to be feeding as a mature believer. The will of God is to live out the Word of God as you are led by the Holy Spirit. E. The byproduct of supernatural satiation 1. Readiness - 1 Peter 2:15b And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it. If I am not feeding on the Word, I am unable to answer them well. The Holy Spirit will bring to your remembrance the verses that you have read, in order to share with others. 2. Running - Elijah was on the run from Jezebel. He sleeps and is fed by an angel until he is rested and ready for his journey. If we don’t feed and rest on the Word of God, we will not be able to make the journey God asks us to make. If we are to be the church God desires us to be, we must be feeding voraciously on the things of God.
