    I knew it, only because I've seen it before. The car I fixed was at 3 other shops and then I fixed it, I only have a cheap 2 channel scope but it was enough to see the cam to crank signal was off(wish I had the ats escope, love watching Bernies videos) it was a Subaru Impreza but has the same basic setup with the tone ring behind the flywheel.

    I had issues with my old Kia Picanto 1.1. The engine suddenly stopped running. I started diagnosing the issue and tried to resolve it until I found that the cambelt sensor crankcase metal spokes had a few bends because a little stone had gone into the cambelt cover! Great video.

    Another great lesson. Yes, it can be a pain to find a known good. I run into as well. One thing I did want to point out is that after the code clear those that came back were permanent codes, not current or history. So those are mode 10 codes you can't and won't clear until whatever the drive cycle may be until the PCM clears them itself. If I'm wrong let me know.

    A friend of mine has a Nissan Murano that a mechanic installed a used engine on also. That engine will not start unless he sprays carb cleaner. I put a scope on the crank sensor and there is a signal, but the voltage is at 8 volts. The service manual says it should be at around 1.6 at idle. We're loading a new crank sensor into the cannon 🤞

      I would say it’s probably because a lot of techs take what the scan tool says to literally and go down a rabbit hole. I use to be the same way. With a decent amount of knowledge you can figure out what’s wrong with most concerns without it. But it is a great tool to have. Just my thoughts

    • @FREERIDE270
      @FREERIDE270 2 місяці тому +1

      @@gamestava I agree with you that there's a lot of tech's who base their diagnosis solely off dtc's and data using a scan tool but that's not what will lead you down a rabbit hole. lacking experience on operations /functions of the scan tool along with the knowledge to read and understand what data you are collecting. What I don't agree with is scan tool data causing tech's to misdiagnos faults within a CAN system but won't with out a scan tool. Still trying to figure out all the comments about not needing a scan tool and your a shitty tech if you do....

    • @gamestava
      @gamestava Місяць тому

      @@FREERIDE270 I agree it is still really essential especially with todays cars. So many systems and without using a scan tool you make never uncover problems that are underlying. So any tech that says they never use one to diag are just bragging about a skill that really isn’t a skill. I use all the tools at my disposal.

    That goes to show that people who maybe shouldn’t even attempt to tackle such a big job get encouraged to do so anyway by some UA-camrs who make something like this easier than it is or people in the forums saying “just do it yourself, there are many videos out there”. There is a reason why a shop with technicians that have 20+ years experience charge what they charge. So it’s not messed up the first time around and you don’t have to backpaddle.

    This is reminiscent of PHAD that had a Jetta TDI with a similar issue. Turns out the notch that is read by the crank sensor is incorporated in the rear main seal, so you have to use a special tool to align the seal with the end of the crank.

    What is a bit disconcerting: these cars are clearly manufactured to be over engineered, and to complicated to be diagnosed by the majority of people; including a good percentage of automotive technicians: save for the few techs that have the skill set of this channel and South Main.
    Added to that, the materials being used to manufacture are yearly becoming inferior, i.e. plastic where a metal apertenance should be utilized.
    An extreme amount of expensive diagnostic equipment must be acquired to hopefully be successful, and from perusing yt channels that is not always the case and does not guarantee success.
    Of course, all by design for the sole purpose of increasing profits for NGO's without any regard for the amount of finite resources currently being depleted from planet earth.
    A dysfunctional, and unsustainable proposition.
    It's a good thing the words of Christ Jesus in the Bible are faithful and true: notable are His promises of the soon to be Kingdom of God prophecies that will be preceded by great tribulation for all the inhabitants of planet earth. Taking into consideration the current events the world is experiencing, it seems that our appointed time is near.

      I’m sorry you feel that way Paul. That’s simply not the case though. We get hundreds of messages/emails every day and we try to respond to everyone we can. We also get people constantly calling the shop for repair advice, shop advice, tool advice, car shopping advice, etc. This channel is literally me and my dad. We try to respond to as many people as we can. I’ve seen my dad have 30 minute conversations with people asking about scopes trying to help them out. At the end of the day. We are two guys who are grateful so many people want to pick our brains, but there’s only so much time in a day. We are running a business, trying to get content filmed and edited, and we both have families (my 4th child is on the way). If you shoot me an email about what you’re needing help and your phone number, I’ll give you a call and try to help. Thanks for expressing your concern! -S3

I have said before that none of the good UA-cam auto diag people are in my area and I wished they could network with shops in other areas to get an idea who is good in these other places and refer people accordingly. Unfortunately it takes even more time out of their day to add that service for essentially no compensation. I think it's going to have to come from the viewer side. I know a guy in my area (Sacramento) who has done me right on many occasions but I can't vouch for other people's experiences but I will happily share if anyone around here asks.
