My favourite episode was when Sgt. Sullivan bravely told off, to my mind, Cpl. Nauyokas and Cpl. Murray for the beer incident, rewarding both sections, for the tug of war incident. I bet if there had been a fight he wouldn't have taken his glasses off. Also Sgt Sullivan has a good sense of humour, when he was pleased that some people were listening to him, he says "don't make this mistake, lads, or you will be a specky four eyed spastic like me".
My father did conscription here in NZ in the late 60's he used to feed us the way the army did, everything on the one plate. To this day I cannot eat mutton stew with pieces of banana and apple floating on the top. Makes me feel sick to think about it. He even yelled at us the way the sergeants yelled. I have severe anxiety as a result
Kissing arse is a good thing in the forces. However, if this was real basic training, after a couple of weeks, the NCO's go easy on you and it starts being a laugh. However, during the first couple of weeks, hell I cried and fell asleep in classes, I am man enough to admit to that. Once basic and trade training is over, it is a pile of shit anyway, first name basis with everyone on base, apart from a few arseholes. However, if they earned the rank then I did not mind calling them corporal etc.

I don't agree with forced conscription, but I feel society would be far less fucked if we had it.
National Service was a way to occupy a bored, destitute youth just after WW2. Nowadays they would be better placed in community work.
