  • To be honest, I’m used to shooting primarily with studio strobes- it’s my comfort zone and sometimes we all get a bit too comfortable! Recently I’ve been playing around (and falling in love with) the Nanlite Pavotubes. These constant LED light tubes are full RGB, meaning you can change them to any color on the spectrum. Plus, you can adjust their brightness and saturation in order to achieve the exact color and look you desire from each tube.
One of the great things about constant lights is WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get). In other words, I can make adjustments to the color, saturation, and position of the light and see the effect in real-time rather than having to take a shot, review, and adjust. I enjoy how working with constant lights seems to encourage me to experiment more, to try different color combos, and to approach the shoot without a set plan because I can see what I’m doing as I make the changes!
For this image, I decided to make a color portrait of my beautiful subject using 4 Pavotubes. These tubes come in a variety of different sizes (10inc, 2ft, 4ft, etc) and I decided to use two 2ft tubes in the front and two 4ft tubes in the back of my subject.
I surrounded my subject in a square of four lights and switched between various colors until I found a color palette that ‘felt right. Typically when I go into a shoot I have a specific color theory and harmony in mind (analogous, triadic, etc), but in this example, I just made adjustments until I felt the result looked striking. For the final shot, I ended up with blue and magenta as rim light (in the back) and green and blue as main lights (in the front).
To give the shot a little bit more energy and life, I used Atmosphere in a Can (aka Haze in a Can). This spray substance creates a bit of texture in the air that when backlit results in a beautiful glow to the light and a bit more interest to the shot. I use this regularly when I want more dramatic or cinematic results- it's one of my favorite creative tools that isn’t a light modifier!
While the Nanlite Pavotubes are surprisingly bright, I still shot at a bit of a higher ISO (800-1000 range). I know that my Canon R5 still produces extremely clean files with almost no discernible noise even when at the ISO 1000+ range. I typically prefer to switch to a slightly wider aperture lens like a 50mm 1.2 or even a 24-70mm 2.8 lens so that I can shoot at a wider aperture if I need.

Hi Lindsey, thank you for posting your awesome tutorials. Loved the colors with the nanlites. I do have one thing though, adorama says "temporarily unavailable" on the atmosphere spray. This video reminded me to try some out, and that's what I saw on their website. 😭

Hi Lindsay! I was so excited when I saw this video!!! I recently read your book "One light Artistry" if I'm not mistaken. It really inspired me. Can you by any means recommend any books on portrait Photography? I'm sure if you recommend any, they'll really be worth it. Thank you so much ❤️

No matter how nice those tubes are, God this is f****** 500$USD just for 2!!! That's outrageous for a plastic tube of Leds imo... I'll keep that money for actual Flashpoint flashes or lens.
